Yes solid yellow gold is a great option for permanent jewelry. Most people use sterling silver instead of white gold because over time the white gold will need to be dipped again to maintain the color.

It depends on your learning style. Some people are able to learn off of CZcams videos and other free online resources. Some people prefer to take a course.
