Casey Rankin: The Japanese-American || The Story of the Man who Sung the Orguss Theme

  • The story of a musician, a Vietnam veteran, and composer of one of the greatest mecha openings of all time.
    ------------About this video--------------
I first started looking into Casey Rankin around 2017 and was shocked to find how scarce any information was on him. He didn't have an English wikipedia page and his Japanese wiki page only gave a brief glimpse into his life. After a year of writing this, finding Japanese articles and interviews and having them translated, as well as contacting Casey's son Eric, I finally got a dynamic look into Casey's life.
At first, I felt this story was too special for just a video and considered making it a panel at an anime convention. Those don't exist anymore so I pitched it to Crunchyroll when they announced open submission. They were interested at first then ghosted me. Wanting to get back into making regular content I decided to just buckle down and start recording.

Wow, I was wholly unaware he had died, and so long ago. We worked together in Tokyo and I knew him well enough. He smoked a shit ton of cigarettes. I never realized how much he sounded like David Crosby in places. Interesting to know about his life before Japan. 62 is too young. RIP, Casey.

Orguss is one of my favorite mecha show and I love the Songs rankin did for it, though I never knew a lot about him before so this was really insightful. Hearing how he passed away honestly makes me sad since he went through what seemed like a lot. But at the very least his legacy lives on and still is remembered after his passing.

Great video. Dude is certainly an unknown legend. The Orguss theme is one of my favorite anime songs. I now have a greater appreciation for the man who wrote it.
BTW, when you said he was born in Kansas, you showed a picture of Kansas City, Missouri. It borders Kansas and there is a Kansas City, Kansas on the other side of the border but if he was born in Kansas, that was the wrong picture to show. Just thought I’d let you know that in case nobody has already.

This was a great video I love the clip where he explains the meaning of I believe in you. I thought this video was very well-done. However you said he was born in kansas. I believe the picture you showed was Kansas City Missouri. There are two Kansas Cities, or one separated by the state line depending on your perspective. Basically if you were stuck in the area or came for a weekend trip, most of the cool stuff would be on the MO side (union station, art museum, neat little aquarium next to Lego land) and some really neat architecture.
I know this is nit-picky, but it seemed like a lot of work went into this video I though you might want to know. I don’t know for SURE, but that picture really does look like the KCMO skyline

Oh wow, thanks for making this. First found Shogun a couple of years, either through chance or through hearing Bad City, and had a hard time finding out what this bizarre Japanese band with an American vocalist was. And then once I managed to find out the name of that voice, Rankin, the only English source I could find was on the Sonic wiki. Very cool to hear more about his life and career. Shame he's not that well known, but his hits clearly landed well judging by how many others have expressed their appreciation in the comments.
