  • A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction (MI), is a medical emergency that occurs when there is a blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. This blockage usually results from a blood clot forming in a narrowed or damaged artery. When the blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is restricted or cut off, that part of the muscle can become damaged or die if the blood flow is not restored quickly.
It's important to note that not everyone experiences all of these symptoms, and some individuals may have atypical symptoms or none at all, which can make it more challenging to recognize a heart attack.
If you or someone you are with experiences symptoms that you suspect may be a heart attack, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention by calling emergency services (911 in the United States or the emergency number in your country). Early treatment can significantly improve the chances of survival and reduce the extent of heart muscle damage. Treatment for a heart attack may include medications to dissolve blood clots, angioplasty and stent placement to open blocked arteries, and lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of future heart problems.
Prevention of heart attacks often involves lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, not smoking, and managing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are also important for monitoring heart health and assessing risk factors.
