  • Part 33 of The X-Trail Files.
In this video - which is a follow up to part 32, I talk about the importance of handbrake cable condition and where to find the cable adjuster nut.
Worth noting that the cable equaliser that joins the single handbrake cable to the two individual wheel cables - should stay parallel when the handbrake is pulled on or released. If it twists diagonally it indicates that one of the cables is either sticking and partially seized within its outer tube or it has stretched.

My x trail also had problems with the handbrake. I had it checked and a shoe was missing inside the drum brake.

It's not unknown for the friction material on the shoe to get so worn or overheated (if handbrake is binding) that it de-bonds and separates from the metal shoe. If the shoe is entirely missing then someone made a heck of a mistake 😮

Dude I think you have terrible wrong here regards the lengths. The left hand cable is original 10mm longer. I think the intention is to NOT engage in same time and make car lock both wheels. Likely you will end up give many headaches with some of the info here.

T30 handbrake cables are identical in length and are adjusted equally (official Xtrail workshop manual) and operate using shoes within rear brake disc hub. Any imbalance would fail an MOT (in UK) and make hill starts a bit awkward since one wheel would release before the other and the vehicle would tend to pivot around the locked wheel. Not good when carrying out a hill start while towing. It takes both drums to hold the 1450kg Xtrail.

@@TK42138 You can pull up whatever online store also in UK and you will see they are not same lengths.. Use you VIN or post it here and I will show you. As I said I think the intention is.. but I do not know. But it yours situation you will not pivot or get an problem. Just pull again..

You're correct. Just checked length of new cables against Nissan's specs and I've been sent two identical length cables. However both cables should engage rear parking brake shoes at the same time.

@@TK42138 I have doubled checked and cables has different OEM and lenghts. Just like all shops sell. OEM 365308H300
365308H30A and the left hand cable is 10mm longer just as shown in your video. The do not engage even. Not sure why its made like this. But this is why your cable looked stretched. These cables normally fails under the car in the hose and loose backhold. However stretched cables and rust is might be possible.

Apologies to you. You're correct and I'm wrong about the cable lengths. Original plan was to film the replacement as both mine have rusted and feel 'crunchy' when the cable moves.
