Pistol Pete. My favorite player of all time. Nobody has ever impressed me more on a basketball court than Mr. Maravich. He was truly one of a kind.

I'm 26 and he is my favorite all time I saw pistol pete highlights when I was really young then I studied his game and tried to mirror it I really like how thus showed the correlation between him and now a lot of people don't know he stayed that type of stuff

+David Crosier I think Nash was the closest student of Pete, Nash is a more Professional, because he didn't entertain, all serious, fans love to see Nash, the way they want to see Pete in the 70 and early 80 because of their passing style.
Amazingly gifted!!! Way beyond his time!!!if he was to play today, he would dominate.
We truly lost him too soon. Both in life and in the game. Some of his last words were after a pick-up game after not having played or maybe even picking up a ball in years: "I forgot how much fun this could be."
It was so great to see the legends give Pete his due. As a native - born Atlantan, it was such a great thrill to get to watch Pete play with the Hawks when I was a very young kid. Needless to say, I was heartbroken to see Pete leave Atlanta to go to New Orleans. God bless you Pete. May you RIP.

Pete's single-handed influence to the Game of Basketball and all players that came after... is IMMENSE. Deserves all the acclamation in the world for being a ground-breaker, oh so transcendent, in an era where he caught a ton of heat for that magic innovation he did on a basketball court. *which became more than accepted/embraced play*.. later on. He'll continue to remain an inspiration to many.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT video thank you so much. What a player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was a kid when "Pistol Pete" played didn't remember too much about him. I really enjoyed this. He certainly was ahead of his time.
Truly amazed by the skills and flair of Pete, truly a predecessor to the amazing playmakers such as Magic, Bird, Steve Nash, Jason Williams, Rondo and Manu Ginobili. He seems to have the irresistable mix of vision and flair with a touch for the unusual; the behind-the-back passes, nutmegs, circus shots and even turnovers while trying to find the daylight remind me of Manu the most. I would pay to watch him play all day. Thank you for the awesome video!

No one can say Maravich stole the "Black man's moves". Why ? Because they all stole his. Pistol Pete was the first. No one can take that away from him. R.I.P. the original 'soul man' of basketball.
1926 was when the Harlem Globetrotters were created. need i say MORE? that is almost fifty years before Pete was born. I take nothing away from this white "brother" but we were doing these moves long before we were allowed to play with other whites. I am sorry, but Pete was NOT the first "soul man" on the NBA court. Realize WHY blacks were not allowed to play in the NBA and how we formed our own leagues. Then get back to me. Yes, Pete was great but he did NOt create these moves ALONE. We all come from somewhere. Dr J -to MJ, etc. By the way, did we forget WHY the ABA was formed? Because the NBA did not like Pete's style of play like Dr. J. It was Dr. J's style that changed the NBA for more showmanship AND athleticism. I am no hater and Love Pete. There is plenty of black and white footage to prove my point. I love pete just as much as I love Jason Williams.
@@KennethKetchum Jason Williams had nowhere near the shooting nor scoring ability of Pistol. Pistol could do everything Jason could do while keeping his hand on top of the ball at all times and did it 35 years earlier while being an offensive threat from everywhere. They're not comparable players at all except for their flashiness. I'm not taking anything away from Jason Williams, he was a very good point guard in his day, but Pistol was an all-time great and the greatest college player ever.

@@jamesdunn9714 Bob Cousy..was like the original nba showman..And I think if u saw old globetrotter film from even the 50's youd be amazed at what they were doing...pistol was still great though..n amazing passer.

BasketballJones48021 Great music score! I was reading some fool saying Pistol Pete wasn't a great player. Just his NBA stats alone are Hall of fame-worthy (12 seasons, 24.2PPG, 5.4APG, 5-time all-star, 3-time 1st team All-NBA), but to STILL be the all-time Div 1 college scoring leaders (and freshmen back then weren't even eligible to play varsity!) with a mind-numbing 44.2PPG average won't EVER be eclipsed, IMO.

He was the Eddie Van Halen of basketball. Much like Eddie on guitar, Pete just made stuff up out of his creative mind and when combined with hard work and raw talent, it was something to behold.
Truly informative, educational sports video. Maybe Cousy, Baylor, Dr J, Connie Hawkins had a similar influence on the game. Great as Oscar, Havlicek, West, Wilt were, they didn't have the style influence Pete and a precious few others did. Don't wanna forget Earl the Pearl Monroe, either. He too, was huge in this area.
Pete was unique, but I'm glad you mentioned Earl Monroe. He, like Maravich, could jerk you out of your seat with his brilliance.

It’s unfortunate that he couldn’t play with Julius Erving. Google it. He never played with another great player, he probably would of been more engaged. His knee injury was tragic, he would of recovered in today’s era.
He did play with Dr. J for a short time when they we're both with the Hawks They'd play 1v1 daily for the dinner check. . .

Pete had one of the all time great skill sets. Could dribble and pass with the best of them. And his shooting and scoring were top tier as well. One could knock his defense if they wanted, but he could do it all and at a high level. In terms of pure skill, one of the goats.

Top 3 best players of all time, if not definitely top 2 pure scorer and passer of all time. I also dislike when people say he can't beat players of this time, he is ungaurdable, literary. They also say his competition was bad, i beg to defer. Pete influence the game to what it is today.

I can watch Pete for hours he's mesmerising it would have been great to see him play with the Harlem Globetrotters perfect combination for Pete fun,skill and most importantly entertainment🥳🥳🥳 . I think Pete would have found more of a balance and peace in his life enjoying the game and putting on a show for the fans 🌟🌟🌟 without all the pressures and criticism from the pro game.

his problem with the hawks might have been their inability to catch his passes. they weren't ready for all those fake out moves. now the NBA players are. i'm happy to hear Magic give Pete some props. critics snarled that the pistol was the "great white hope", but it is clear he could run, jump, shoot as well as anybody. he was a transitional player.

Physically Rubio will remind you of Pistol Pete, and they both have great passing and ball-handling skills with that sense of flashy basketball... But Ricky is a bit smaller and he can't even begin to see Maravich when it comes to overall scoring/shooting, not even remotely close there.
Isiah's skill-type/level and even game sure do remind Maravich's, he even mentions Pistol Pete plenty of times, he was a big fan... They had many similarities on the court, despite having different physiques and such. And Zeke could sure make it flashy but - unlike Maravich - he also had that killer mentality, he was a great leader, hustled hard on D when it mattered, was cold blooded and knew how to balance his game pretty well.

Wonder why Oscar Robertson seems so dismissive of the Pistol? He is the only great player past or present Ive ever heard say anything unkind about him.
First and foremost, you have to understand that that’s how Oscar is, plenty of times bitter towards players who have more shine than him, even after his retirement... And then you have Pete who broke Robertson’s NCAA scoring record, who was a young hot shot getting all the attention everywhere, entering the NBA when the Big O was already past his peak... I’ve heard a few more players say some unkind words about Maravich though, mainly - his once teammate - Lou Hudson(may he rest in peace).
