I would add a small piece of scrap rubber underneath before tying on the bands.
Adds an extra layer of protection for the bands and makes them last longer.
Works great for rough nattys as well

Get a ruler. Then move it down to your arm to your cheek.

I use string and pull it through the forks, just like drawing the bands when shooting. Then you have your real draw lenght in a piece of string, wich you can measure. Then divide it by 4 to 7 (some rubber can be stretched a lot more) and you realize that calcualting does almost nothing for you. Just cut a piece of rubber and stretch it out, if you can come to a "stop", where you can't stretch it anymore you have the right lenght. Then there comes something like personal preferences, some like to draw hard and short, other like drawing to full butterfly using lighter bandsets. I personally use rubber bands (a lot more tubes actually) between 17-19cm in lenght. But this depends on how stretchy the rubber is and what I want from it. First you have to choose the ammo, then you make the rubber to fit your ammo, then you try to bring it to maximum performance.
Also i have different shooting styles, like with 17cm bands and a draw lenght of 80cm for instinctive shooting while moving, or shooting moving targets. For static precision shooting I use 19cm bands and a draw legth of 90cm. It is almost scary how precise you can hit with a slingshot when everything suits you.
