Nice video. I'm using an old computer from work that was getting thrown away that i installed truenas scale on. Running plex and a Pi hole. Also using it to store back ups of my other computers on it.
Ultimate Tech recycling.......done this with the last 2 old PCs ive had, both made into servers (one for work and one for home) which also hosted Jellyfin as a media server. Great video as always Mike, thanks for sharing 🙂
Actually a really great video the way it's easy to understand and looks like it all should work thanks God bless
Thank you for the kind words and glad you liked the video! We were in Paris on vacation and we accessed our Plex Server to watch movies, so this setup definitely works! 😆
Great! You answered a lot of my questions already in this video..
just one question tho… what if i have a few hard drives with different sizes, and I would like to have them on ZFS (raid zero) setup, what do I need to do then?
I know it’s not recommended because I might lose all data of one of the drives fails, with that in mind what steps we need to take?
Thanks in advance
Thanks for this, very concise.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Excellent video Mike, this is a fantastic solution for those that need their own media server. While I have a Synology DS918+, I could definitely see setting up a secondary media server. btw - I'm in Vegas, staying at the Rio. If you're working some night the next couple of days and don't mind me stopping by for a drink or two, let me know. I can see the Palms from here :) If not, no worries and Happy Thanksgiving!
Are you still in Vegas? I work Sunday and Monday at the Palms West Bar from 1pm to 9pm. Hope to see you!
@@UltimateTechHub Yes sir, still here heading out Wed. morning. I know you'll be busy with work and don't want to interrupt but will pop in for a beer or two to say hello. Looking forward to meeting you!
@@WagnersTechTalk Fantastic! I'm working 12noon to 800pm today for the football games. Can't wait to meet up!
Muchas gracias. Me sirvió muchísimo. 🎉
this is a really great tutorial
Thank you for watching and for the kind comments!
I use my Raspberry Pi 4 as a server for my SiliconDust OTA TV receiver. I can add movies to it too. It’s a nice little set up for people that want to cut the cord.
Raspberry is the best minimal setup! Takes up zero space! My raspberry pi4 is my DNS Pi-Hole server!
@@UltimateTechHub they are coming out with Pi 5 early next year. The specs look good. Good enough to spend $80 to upgrade!
Yep it looks very cool and the new Pi5 will even use NVMe SSDs for storage!
Any chance you can do video on how to install Plex 2.0.6 on truenas scale? some of the configuration is different
Great video. Maybe a stupid question but how do you use your dvd burner to rip your media on the same pc running truenas scale?
Use software like Handbrake to convert the DVD into digital format for your PC. It takes some time to burn DVDs to hard drives so be patient. Otherwise you could be a Pirate but that's none of my business. 😉Thanks for watching!
@@UltimateTechHubwhat is the model of your Asus DVD burner?
Great Guide
Just bought a old Dell server and will be setting up my own True nas plex server. My main PC will love me for it. thanks for the guide.
Is this just for watching movies at you home, or can you watch anywhere with the Plex App? I currently have Plex on 32TB pr4100 NAS, but I'm out of room and looking to expand the size of my storage...this looks like a good way to do that
I have the lifetime plex pass, so I can watch from anywhere in the world as long as there is a mobile connection or wifi. Thanks for watching I really appreciate it! 😉
Thanks for your video
I have the TN scale 23.10.2
Unfortunately the settings/setup for plex are completely diferent from your video .
I just can do it
Any chance of a remake please
I may do another video. Keep an eye out. Thank you for watching!
@13:50 when you browse for folder the unix path was /mnt/data which to me is weird since i saw you create a folder called movies but i guess thats why setting up plex requires the extra dataset with specific folders, in windows its just dumb folders and browse anywhere you like. strange to me but i guess i'll have to get used to that with the TrueNAS/plex setup.
Yes its kind of strange how the folders work and the extra datasets with specific folders. It took some trial and error to get the setup correct. Once its setup its really awesome but it takes some time and patience. Thanks for watching!
@@UltimateTechHub Finally!! It was the "/mnt/data/" folder structure that repeatedly fooled me, and you helped me figure it out! This comment above also helped explain that. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason I can find that the movies hide under that directory, other than it...just...is...I guess. I had also played around with a number of different configs in recent days, putting a single movie in various locations as a tag to help me find where the heck my named "Movies" folder was hiding. I had temporarily given up until I watched your vid.
I got it working fine on Dragonfish without any additional hiccups, even though the menus (especially for Plex itself) were arranged and in some cases named differently. Thanks again!
Is there any chance you can do updated one 0n Dragonfish-24.04.0? Thank you
Why haven´t you checked hardware acceleration ?
does the system that has truenas have to be directly connected to my router?
Thank u!
You're welcome!
"So if you got an old PC lying around" we're using: 😂
Did your system just default you to NFSv4 for the ACL? I can only select POSIX and get no other options for that setting, so I don't even get the option to configure a user for the full control permission. How on earth did you just get that dataset to simply have NFS configured to it automatically like that?
Are you logged in as admin? Mine was set to NFSv4 automatically.
how did you get your dvds on your pc? I want to do the same with mine but don't know how? Can you pleas help?
There are plenty of DVD burning software to choose from. Hand Brake is awesome!
Maybe a dumb question but is your dvd burner built into the PC running TrueNAS?
Yes. I used that burner for many years to transfer my massive movie collection to my hard drives because I'm no pirate! 😉😀
Wouldn't this give Plex a list of everything you have, what you watch, when you watch, and how often you watch, when you add to your system ?
great video!! I just ran my first instal. Promox and truenas. I'm having some App issues in truenas. Server Kubernetes not running message. Any ideas in how to fix that?
I have the same issue right now. Once I get the fix figured out I will let you know. It sounds like this is a common issue.
Yes! Let’s stay in communication. Interesting issue. We may have to summit a ticket . Thanks for sharing !!
Hi. Forgive me if this is a silly question but, when you created the 2 datasets for Plex, you have the option to choose share type. When I tried that (logged into TrueNAS Scale[Cobria]23.1.0.2 as root), I do not, even under advanced options. Is that a version thing or did I miss a step?
I always log in as admin not root. Try that option.
@@UltimateTechHub Yea. Right after I sent that question, I tried that. It was no different.
@@thebrownspoon You may have missed a step. You could try and start over from the beginning. I know that sucks but it might be the only way.
@@UltimateTechHub Following the video to the letter twice, I surely did not, But thank you, anyway. I'm glad it seemed to have worked out for others.
What’s the advantage using Truenas instead of windows with Plex media server?
It’s much easier and faster to setup Plex in windows so I’m curious about why someone would pick Truenas instead.
It's more reliable to have a dedicated Plex server than using your windows PC that might shut off and then you can't access the movies. I've used both and Plex on Windows is much easier to setup but Plex on TrueNAS scale is more reliable.
Some good information but I’d like to see a video using jellyfin as its free
That will be coming soon so make sure to keep an eye out. I love me some jellyfin! 😀
Any suggestions on how to do this with the new version of Scale 23? None of the UI options for Plex in the video (the layout, the wording, the default options) are available for the current version. I tried to install it once and could not view my library on the web app and the user id for plex using the truenas app is 568 instead of 972. No idea whose video to follow as everyone seems to be using different methods (not trying to port forward either). Any updated help would be greatly appreciated
Have you found any solutions? Having similar issues
@@6thhokagealways ended up just using Windows. Much faster and easier setup
@@CC-zr6fp so you said screw scale altogether?
@@6thhokagealways yeah. Everything was more straight forward and since I only plan on using the NAS as a plex server I dont need any of the other apps what you could use. Not to mention when there is a server update, it takes about a day or so for the app to get the update. Granted that isnt long at all but I rather not have to worry.
Hi great vidieo I need help with Plex I started useing Plex few years ago I was useinv an omen pc for my server and to leave it running 24(7 my pc will shut off though I have it set there was nothing wrong we took it to geek squad and they said it’s fine yet it will still do this would yoh have any idea why this happened
Check power settings, to make sure it's not turning off after 8 hours or whatever the settings are. My PC is set to never turn off. I'm sure its some sort of setting your missing. Keep me posted and thanks for watching.
Just to ad a comment. this is way to high tech for me 😲
Its a bit complicated I know! Sorry! 😄
@@UltimateTechHub Don't be sorry me friend. you are on another level bro 😀
only the plex setup, truenas was < 5min practically, plex is an easier setup on the pc, router config and tokens not required. But what is the difference in performance??
Can you add streaming apps to the server
Yes
Whatever I do, I can't access my media folder after installing plex due to it taking ownership. Adding my user does not help.
can I ask that when you do screen based tutorials, you zoom in a bit, it's almost impossible to follow along, your text is so small
As well going to fast 😊
is truenas really necessary? Can I not just launch plex media server on my desktop when I want to stream something in my other room and boot up plex on a firestick to connect to it?
If you want to just run Plex you can do that on any computer. The benefit of having a dedicated machine like this is that if you want to use your computer to do something, you don't have to worry about it affecting people using the Plex server or vice versa. Also, you can set up a NAS to be power efficient when it's not in use. If you want to run Plex on your desktop, you need to make sure your desktop is always running so that the apps on the other end of the network can access it.
@@jasonx7803 So baslically if I just want something to use for myself at home, and i'm not worried about others connecting remotely, running the server and importing my library locally should suit my needs perfectly right? (ie load it up, go sit on the couch and fire up plex on my firestick or on my elliptical with the ipad)
@@rikerFFXI pretty much, yeah.
@@jasonx7803 Thanks a bunch bud =]
Watching from Yosemite Kentucky.
will it allow me to access the server ouside my home?
The Plex Server can be accessed from anywhere in the world if you have the Plex Pass. We watched our Plex Server from Paris and no issues.
@@UltimateTechHub what if i want to access not just movies but other files?
If I only use the plex server on my local network do I need to forward a port on my router? If not, how do I setup firestick to access plex on TrueNAS scale server? NOTE: noob to everything.
why when i click on web portal i cant find my server or the Library?
Is you IP address correct? double check the IP address.
@@UltimateTechHub thanks for replying back, it’s the correct IP address ,the only way I managed to see the server and add the library is through Plex media server app in windows which is don’t make sense but works for now.
Great video! This help me get it setup. I will be adding more movies slowly to it. I just pick up a new graphics that I will do a passthrough with (from promox). I am hoping that this will take the load off the CPU. Still have more to do, like getting picture stored on the NAS and then packing all that up there.
Sounds great! Thanks for the kind comments and keep me posted with any questions and thank you for watching!
Guessing your pc has to be hard wired to get the IP address screen huh? I installed truenas scale but the black screen with the ip information I get has no IP info just the 1-9 options to setup network. Is there a way to do this via wifi? getting to my router is a real pain
Your Wifi NIC has the option for static IP address assignment. I've done this before. Keep me posted.
If I have ZERO interest in seeing Plex content outside my home, do I still require a token? I just want DLNA capability from Plex, nothing more.
