There is an old Frank Sinatra song that goes like this:

Which, for some reason, came to mind yesterday - a beautiful fall day - as I traveled to Greenwich Village for the opening of Wegmans' first Manhattan store. The two-story store on Astor Place - most recently the site of a Kmart and before that a John Wanamaker department store - is 87,000 square feet in size, but manages to feel like it is both cozy and a Wegmans on steroids at the same time. It is highly food-forward, theatrical, and yet accessible in a way that I don't think that a nearby Whole Foods (.3 mile to the north, on 14th Street) and Eataly (.9 mile to the north, on the corner of 5th Avenue and 23rd Street) are.
I went to the Astor Place Wegmans armed only with my iPhone and my curiosity, and I wandered the store shooting lots of video and offering what I hope you will find to be relevant commentary. While some of the crowds can be attributed to the fact that this was opening day, one could sense enormous enthusiasm for the Wegmans brand - the location is prime, the locals are primed, and this has all the markings of a store that is likely to be a big success for Wegmans.

Thanks Kevin! I’ve wanted to go to wegman’s for some time but the stores in Harrison NY and Brooklyn were just too much hassle to commute to. Now, at Astor Place seems a more manageable commute. I think I’ll be thrilled to experience in person. I’m so glad you talked about the check out lines! Id hate to have the visit spoiled by standing on line for half hour or more.
This is the First Manhattan store for Wegmans', and as it is in the High rent district it should do well.
Cuz I'm a gluten free lady, i got so easily addicted to their cream burle. Plus they told me that they are gonna discontinued it due to the hardship of supplying it's metrials to the store from NY, To N,VA . I'd loved from you to spent more time at the bakery+pastry dept to see if they have my #Cream #Brulee 😢😢😢.
Great video! I'm pretty sure Wegman's 1st NYC store is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard but it's hard to get to with public transit. I can't wait to visit this one once the crowd dies down a bit. Actually it might be like the 14th St Union Square Trader Joe's.
Did Wegman pay you for this coverage? Or did you get permission from Wegman for shooting inside?

Wegmans is a pretty chill store, and they are probably excited to have the free exposure.
