Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) make a plan to go to Australia, then go out shooting.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Opening with a silent "movie" of Butch Cassidy's Hole in the Wall Gang, George Roy Hill's comically elegiac Western chronicles the mostly true tale of the outlaws' last months. Witty pals Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) join the Gang in successfully robbing yet another train with their trademark non-lethal style. After the pair rests at the home of Sundance's schoolmarm girlfriend, Etta (Katharine Ross), the Gang robs the same train, but this time, the railroad boss has hired the best trackers in the business to foil the crime. After being tailed over rocks and a river gorge by guys that they can barely identify save for a white hat, Butch and Sundance decide that maybe it's time to try their luck in Bolivia. Taking Etta with them, they live high on ill-gotten Bolivian gains, but Etta leaves after their white-hatted nemesis portentously arrives. Their luck running out, Butch and Sundance are soon holed up in a barn surrounded by scores of Bolivian soldiers who are waiting for the pair to make one last run for it.

    • @AdjacentJustice
      @AdjacentJustice Před rokem +10

I thought this comment was interesting but wasn't sure I agreed with it, but I see it more on re-watch. And it makes sense when you think about it-- it's a matter of experience. Other than the time he mentions getting captured and jailed, Sundance has almost never been in a tight spot he couldn't shoot his way out of. Even against the superposse, Sundance thought their chances were better fighting 2 against 10 than the other two options. Whereas Butch is pretty much always in situations he can't shoot his way out of since he never learned how and hates killing (it's unlikely he was able to hit any of the Bolivian bandits, but he is there to see Sundance kill them all, and things aren't the same between them after). And this fight isn't even against elite lawmen or grinning killers, these are just the locals. But today the mice have finally had enough, and have turned and sank all their little teeth into the cat. In that light Sundance's wide eyes and constant looks to Butch are more understandable, and more noticeable. Sundance has taken on and taken out all comers, and they just keep coming. That's new, and probably a lot more frightening than gunplay is to him anymore. But 'ole Butch is eternally outmatched. For him, this is Tuesday. So he comes up with an escape plan, gets his shaken but by nature single-minded friend pointed in the direction of the next score, and just generally gets on with it. The fact that this time he and Sundance are clearly going to be slaughtered only seems to make him thoughtful.
And me too, apparently. Great comment and such a pearl of a movie!

There's something so goddamn captivating about this scene. There's such rich character detail in how they communicate in this shorthand; Sundance just knows Butch's arm is shot and goes to load his gun and tie it to his hand without being told. They both know they're dead, yet they don't feel the need for sentimentality or some profound emotional statement. They communicate their affection through the banter about where they'll flee to. That's enough sentimentality for them.
They're both fading, but I doubt they'd play it any differently if they had the chance. Sure maybe they'd take a different path through the mountains or something, but this is always how it was going to end for them.

One of the best uses of freeze-frame in a film. You know exactly what happens next, but your last image of the legendary duo is one of dignified glory. Still, the lack of triumphant music and the sounds of gunshots that follow remind you that these men, as much as you grew to like them, were outlaws that had to meet their end sooner or later.

My sister and I went to Paul Newman’s “hole in the wall gang camp” (dedicated to children with cancer or other life threatening afflictions ) it was the embodiment of everything that a good person would fantasize about doing for suffering children, if they became a millionaire. Horseback riding, water gun fights, fishing, campfires, tennis courts, etc. My sister even got act in a play with Julia Roberts, and I was in a talent show that was the “Opening Act” for the Blue man group. That was by far the best time in my life, and here I am, still enjoying his hard work.

This movie is about a race against time and time is catching up with them. They know it too; that's why Etta left. Brilliant movie, screenplay and actors involved. I hated the ending but it's inevitable.

That's the brilliance of the film. Superficially it's a breezy action comedy but there's this melancholy sense of doom that hangs over the whole thing and makes the ending work. Tonally it's quite a balancing act, and it never missteps.

Best adaptation of this line: first timeline Nicholas Rush in Stargate Universe. His last words before he dives through an unstable wormhole and dies on the other side. The next timeline Rush then has to explain to everyone watching the footage what the line means while the guy who hates him helps, commenting that this is his favorite movie too. The second Rush later makes the same quip.

I think this is where Bruce Lee got the idea for the ending to his movie Fists of Fury where he's being escorted out of the school after he gave himself up to the detective for killing the Japanese that were involved in poisoning his teacher. When he see the police mob he runs towards them and jumps in the air and it freeze frames and you hear gunshots! It pretty dramatic.

Its debatable. They didn't see the army arive, as far as they know its just the police and the killed quite a lot of them. So whilis they think they probably have little chance of escape they have some. So I think they are taking about Australia semi- seriously. The scene is ambiguous though

I saw an interview with Butch Cassidy's little sister on the Mike Douglas Show back in the early 1970s, in which Butch's sister claimed that Butch returned years later to visit the family. If she was telling the truth, Butch survived the shootout, even if Sundance didn't.

I know that this isn’t a remake of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but…
Does anybody know about this movie:
It was either made in the 90’s or early two thousands.
A couple of American outlaws are down in an arid region of South America, and they are being chased by this country’s army. And the soldiers of this army look like German soldiers from WWI, with picklehaub helmets and machine guns. Just like Butch and Cassidy, these two go down guns a blazing.
