  • “On the Street Where You Live” was written for the 1956 Broadway musical “My Fair Lady.” Created by the highly successful musical theater partnership of Lerner and Loewe, which spanned three decades (1942-1960 and 1970-1972), the music was composed by Frederick Loewe, with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play “Pygmalion,” the musical “My Fair Lady” starred Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison in the original Broadway cast. John Michael King played Freddy Eynsford-Hill who sang “On the Street Where You Live.”
The 1956 Vic Damone recording was the most popular single of the song, peaking at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in 1958. Numerous performers have recorded “On the Street Where You Live,” including Eddie Fisher, Lawrence Welk and His Orchestra, Andy Williams, Ray Conniff, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Mario Lanza, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Harry Connick Jr., Quincy Jones and others.
Setting box office records, the hit Broadway production of the musical had the longest run of any show until that time. The 1964 film adaptation of “My Fair Lady” starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, with Bill Shirley dubbing “On the Street Where You Live” for Jeremy Brett. The original Broadway production, its many revivals, and the film version all won major awards and nominations, including eight Tony Awards, with the 1957 Tony Award for Best Musical, and eight Oscars, including the 1964 Academy Award for Best Picture. “My Fair Lady” has often been referred to as “the perfect musical.” This arrangement of “On the Street Where You Live” is improvised by pianist Charles Manning.
