Nah you don't need to study theory. I mean, you can and it will a hundred percent help you but you don't need it. I got to 2k without theory, though if I studied I'd probably be better but if you play for fun you don't need to study, however if you're playing to compete or whatever I would advise to study theory, as having a good opening repertoire will get you a couple hundred ELO points
