Chasing the Domtar Paper Mill Train - Lake State Railway

During 2020, Domtar Paper in Port Huron, Michigan began closing operations at this location. On November 20th, we chased the Lake State Railway's crew, as they switched the small branch line which is leased to the railroad. We will also see the lift bridge over the Black River in operation.
We will begin the chase at Washington Avenue, which is the entrance to Domtar Paper. After rearranging cars in the plant, the #1501 will head west on the branch to the CN interchange, with 7 boxcars. The MP15AC will then bring 8 cars from CN and re-switch Domtar Paper.
The small branch line has several industries on it, which LSRC services. However, in 2022, Dunn Paper, the other remaining paper mill closed operations. With the loss of both paper mills on the line, traffic has nearly dried up though Lake State is working to find more companies willing to use rail traffic.
