Nowadays they are. If you look at some of the early ones, like with Michael Cera and Sean Penn, I question whether they were completely in the know...

Between 2 Ferns is hilarious! They are in on it. There are several of them.
I love the bloopers reel from the show. When they break character and you can see how funny they all think it is. Yes they are all aware it's a comedy bit, but they don't know what's going to come at them so I think some reactions are actually a bit real.
The Bradley Cooper one is great.
Steve Carell is the best of "in-between two ferns"
One of my favorite Zach Galifianakis jokes was when he said:
"My grandfather said we have a great last name because it starts with 'gal' and ends with 'kiss.'
I wish it was 'Galifianafuck.'"

It’s improv. The actors don’t know what the questions will be, but they understand that it’s sketch comedy

Between Two Ferns is amazing. The Bradley Cooper and Steve Carrell ones are by far my favourites, definitely worth a watch.
Honestly there’s a ton of American cringe humor that blows the brits out of the water, but the mainstream British humor has more cringe and sarcasm elements than mainstream American humor.

Nathan fielder is the absolute best at this awkward style of comedy. Watch his Conan interview with Susan surandon as his back up interview. It’s so great.
All of the guests are in on it, it’s just sort of like an improv skit. The celebs know what the show is about, they just play along and help make it funnier.

He has pissed a few off, though with his questions...people going into it thinking it'll be fun, then getting hit with a question that hit a nerve.
Since you were talking about when comedians let the audience stew in awkwardness, I really recommend Norm Macdonald’s roast of Bob Saget. You can be the judge on if he pulled it off. I remember seeing it back when it aired and I thought it was brilliant. He did the totally unexpected.
Deadpan comedy is fantastic.

I wanted to support the charity called Prince Andrew's House for Wayward Teen Girls. But I heard none of them were wayward before they got there.
I've seen these but only a couple minutes. I never got it and thought it was really cringe but now that I watch it I understand and love it! In light of how just cringe ends outright terrible today's media and so-called "news outlets" have twisted and skewed the truth in our culture today This is a spot on parody of that and I'm all for it!

If you want to see "real" roasts you need to watch Comedy Central Roast. It's a series that first aired on the comedy channel in 2003. There are eight to ten people invited who roast each other before roasting the subject of each show. Subjects of the roasts include musicians, actors, comedians and Donald Trump. A few of my favorites are Pam Anderson, Charlie Sheen, Justin Bieber. But they are all worth watching!

Looks like you guys have never seen "The Hangover", if you think that nobody in Hollywood would recognize Zack. The interviewees known they're in for a ride, but don't know exactly what he's going to ask. Also, if you ever react to a feature, The Hangover would be a good fit.

That was pretty funny. Honestly, I grew up with this little hate against Brad because all the girls growing up (my sister included) were in love with him. It made me ignore any movie he put out. As I got older and watched some of his older ones (Legends of the Fall) up to his newer ones (Fury, Inglorious Basterds, Troy), I'd say he's a real solid actor actually and not just looks. Not quite Leonardo Dicaprio type quality of acting with the looks, but still a heck of a lot better than I had in my mind growing up not liking him out the gate, lol.
