  • Pop Gone Wrong: Taylor Swift & The Tortured Poets Department. The superstar’s 11th album is a lukewarm, synthetic attempt at unhinged revenge in love & war, and it’s the final straw in my complicated appreciation for a musician too big to fail.

I always loved her lyricism, but some of these lyrics made me roll my eyes or laugh out loud. It's fine if other people disagree and honestly think it's a great album, but I'm tired of the Swifties who worship anything she does like she's a God who can do no wrong.

L take tbh. There are so many examples of people losing love for each other in a relationship and naturally drifting apart, especially in long term relationships. Oftentimes, the breakdown of a situationship is more heartbreaking (for some people) because you've not explored the potential you could have had with that person, so you're constantly stuck thinking "what if" - with long term relationships, you've explored that potential and so for some people it's less jolting. You not understanding that people process relationships differently and that the heart doesn't really care whether you're 25 or 70 and for how long you've known a person says a lot about your emotional intelligence

It’s not meant to be commercial, eh? With all the vinyl variants? With all the TikTok campaigns? Making playlists feeding the rabid fans with their theories about a person with mental problems being a cheater (when the one who cheated emotionally was her)? With releasing the second half (with all the “limited/exclusive” edition tracks) couple of hours later, making hardcore swifties buy it AGAIN to get the full experience? I agree with every point made about how out of touch she is, but I don't think that's a very new complaint. I consider "folklore" and "evermore" to be her best works specifically because her writing isn't so focused on herself in those records.
That being said, I still think "reputation" is her worst album. That album, in my opinion, has all the same writing issues TTPD has, what with the out-of-touchness and clumsy cursing and all, but it's also musically her most baffling one. TTPD is "just" extremely boring.
Lastly, I want to touch on "The Anthology". I don't get why she insisted on releasing it attached to TTPD, because it's just a far superior album. Not that it's some sort of masterpiece or anything, but Dessner absolutely clears Antonoff in terms of production, and Taylor's lyrics, while still out of touch and far from her peak, are way less offensive than on the main release.

As an avid swiftie (not a crazy cult-like one I swear lol), a fan of the album, and a fan of you, I agree with your takes on all the commercialization, vinyl variants, etc. It gets to be a bit much. I agree there are some cringey lyrics on the album as well as some repetitive lyrics and themes , but I do think there is some AMAZING lyrics as well. loml is my favorite and is possibly one of the best Taylor Swift songs I've ever heard, it's so beautiful lyrically in my opinion.
One thing I think about this album that is different from her others is I think it was not entirely meant to be popular or for her fans or anything like that. I think she just had some things she wanted to get off her chest and share with the world, without caring so much about how the album performs or how well it meshes together. That's why it may be messy at parts, but there's beauty in some of the mess. Is it my favorite album of hers? No. But is it a bad album? I don't think so. But that's just my opinion and I respect yours as well!

With the eras tour break, and the feedback from this album, her next might be better and more ambitious. Or, more likely, when the heat dies down and she drops in popularity to a more stable level, she’ll become more creative because she’ll feel more free to do whatever she wants. I really miss country Taylor Swiss. I don't even like country as a genre that much. I don't hate it, injust don't go searching for it. But Taylor always sounded so genuine and now I just feel like she is a machine, just constantly pumping out content. I won't even call it music anymore. It's just something to release. Redecorating her old albums was genius and I really admired the idea behind doing that but adding all those Vault tracks on was too much. I literally felt like my ears were vomiting from eating too much at once too fast. And some of those songs were great too! It's just sad to see her turn into this. Taylor, I know you won't see this, but please please please SLOW the FUCK DOWN. I am actively avoiding this new album and I know it's only a matter of time before I give in. The beginning of this video... MY GOD you're so real for this! Having said that, there are levels of ick I experienced while listening to this album. Being so cold and disrespectful to Joe, all of the wet rat songs, the lack of self-reflection and accountability, clunky lyrics... We did not need to hear any of this.

I'm already not a Swiftie (never have been) and haven't even listened to the album. I don't plan to listen to it either. The way you talk about the lyrics (which I must agree with) makes her seem very immature and not willing to branch out of her comfort zone. She needs a break and time to realizee her own wrongdoings instead of blaming everybody else around her via her songs. Maybe then she may even realize that her fanbase is super cult-ish and are part of the problem for putting her on a pedestal and worshipping the ground she walks on no matter what she does.

I feel like this album does not paint a good picture of Taylor. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like a lot of the songs make her seem unlikable and a little immature. I really wish she’d make more albums like “Speak Now,” “folklore,” and “evermore”.

There are so many lyrics on the album that reflect my life as well. Maybe you`'re just not the target audience but don't speak for everyone else.

It’s about Matty mostly. It must of been longer behind the scenes supply. Otherwise it’s just psycho to put so much energy into this guy, rather than Joe.
Joe’s songs were her best! I think he tried to help her down a more lyrical path.
And poor Joe. So shitty to write what she did publicly. Where is the respect. Making herself sound amazing as usually (despite covert humble pretence) what was his sin ?
    He didn’t deserve that.
Shows how shallow and uncaring she truly is.

Love hearing your thoughts, even when they sometimes differ from mine! Thanks for another great video Jon!
Coming from someone who enjoys a good amount of Reputation and thinks Midnights was actually a solid pop album, this one didn't land with me at all. Only exception being The Prophecy.
I generally like Taylor and have been a casual fan of a lot of her music for about 10 years now. I think she is a good artist and songwriter at her core.
That being said, she isn't above constructive criticism. Neither is any other artist. I just don't know why many fans have to drum up so much hype around their favorite artists, portraing them as the best thing in music history, when music is so subjective. You can enjoy someone's work and have them be the best thing in your world, without the need for them to be the best thing in the entire world, if that makes sense? Not everyone is gonna share your opinion. It's ok to love this album or any other, while being respectful towards other people's critiques and music preferences.

  • @gcolbyp

This album was a slog and I wasn’t really a big fan of Midnights personally due to the flat production IMO and the lyrics being super corny and cringey, and TTPD feels like it doubles down on that, but I’ll give Midnights this, I was never bored. You’re right on her relying on the “Taylor Swift-ism” on this album to where it’s gotten predictable and uninspired at this point. And you compare this to like a watching a Marvel movie, but at least certain MCU movies, the best ones mainly, excite me or try to do something different and surprise me.
This album felt like the success and recent critical acclaim get into Taylor’s head like she can’t miss this time but no one is there to tell her to let her ego down a bit, especially with these very “Woah is me…” lyrics. She needs to get away from Jack Antonoff and work with someone else, but it seems unlikely at this point.

I once mentioned how another band's song was basically if the Power Rangers SPD incident on Twitter was made into an actual song in one of your comment sections (Wherever it is in CZcams's confusing layout.), Taylor Swift is like if the person who started it by judging said show by its cover before even watching it had a career in music and continued to write her performative activism into music.

As a swiftie, I forgive you and I paritally agree- I did my part and stayed up till midnight to listen to the album. When I first listened to it, I was really taken aback because it felt like Repulaton Taylor's lyrics, which I hated, and Lover Taylor's synth and I did not enjoy it as much as Midnights. Taylor is at her best when she incorpeates her "folklore" lyrics, not when she tries to wrap heartbreak in a bow. I will say, I thought LOML, Florida!!! and So Long London were strong lyrically and felt more genuine. As a bleachers fan, I have no idea what is happening with Jack's producing because I felt like he did a weird job on his own album. When you have the time, I would check out some of the Deluxe songs, I think Taylor has an issue with picking songs, The Lakes is my favorite T.S song and its a bonus track- "Black Dog", "How did it end", are all solid. "thanK you amIEe" gives such speak now vibes. Thank you for your review :)

I'm a newer Swiftie -- I've always liked her, just not to this extent --- thanks to the Eras tour craze, the Eras tour movie (which I saw eight times in theaters), and just her being everywhere. She is incredible... but the reason she's incredible is because she always sounds so different. What other artist could do songs from Folklore, Lover, Fearless type albums in the same concert?
For years, I never ventured to far into her discography because I was convinced all the songs sounded the same, but she proved me HELLA wrong.. then she went came out with an album that represents the Taylor I was never really into.

I absolutely disagree with this is the downfall of Taylor artistically.
As a swiftie, I agree with the review. However this is the standard version. I treat the second half of the album has part 2. And this standard version as part 1. I really would recommend the second part as it’s almost like a cousin to folklore and evermore. Aaron is the main producer so there isn’t much mid synth pop.

I'm not a superfan or anything, but I've been an avid Swiftie for a minute and I just feel like every album she's released recently (new) hasn't been good. Midnights, in my opinion, inspired absolutely nothing special. I expect Taylor to be coming with a new sound that the genre hasn't heard before for the most part, or to so thoroughly make that sound in that genre her own that it's immediately classic the way folklore is to me. But Midnights felt like every other electropop bit, which wasn't awful but nothing standout, and TTPD the album without the anthology part all just sounds the same to me if we're being honest. The first two songs I especially can't stand. The Anthology is so much better and I wish she had released it separately because I don't want to hear a quarter of that album in my whole album listen-through. I would've much preferred a twin album. I just feel like her originality has maybe taken a hit, it's not the coolest that she's hyper obsessing over Matty Healy which was a blip in her whole timeline, and I also can't stand that occasionally she's throwing in TikTok one liner soundbites like "blah blah blah but I'm soo productive!!" on that one song. She has more in her locker, so I expect more. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Anthology part. I always really enjoy your videos, even though I don't normally agree with everything said (read: rep is my favorite album and I stand by it).

It's impossible to be constantly creative and artistic. Your brain needs time to process and solidify ideas. If Taylors brain was an oven, she's trying to bake a cake every 2 minutes. Feeding her fans raw dough.
Compare that to Kendrick Lamar, who puts out an album every 3000 years. It's a long wait, but they are solid, artistic, and very creative albums.
