When I saw the portrait of Elise being photographed & the look on her face as she sees Richard & realize that moment was captured just for him (in the Hall of History), I got chills & it took my breath away! Great direction! Great acting! Great filming! Few films have touched me like this!
The photo scene with her smile, rivals the Mona Lisa. The "what would I say to him" speech rivals Shakespeare. How can you combine romance and science fiction so beautifully, so seamlessly? You can when it's one of the greatest love stories ever told on film. So heartening when you find out that everyone involved with this masterpiece felt that. Jane Seymore and Christopher Reeve should be so proud of their work, their transcendent charisma trumps box office, oscars, and critics opinion. The jury is out, "Somewhere" is timeless.
I remember, years ago, flipping through the cable channels looking for something...anything to watch. I came across this movie. I didn't catch the beginning...but I watched the movie till the end. When Christopher's character Richard dies, I turned off the TV and stood up to go to my room. My Mom asked me, "What's wrong?" I said, "Nothing." I went down the hallway, into my room, shut the door, threw myself on the bed and proceeded to cry my eyes out...saying over and over while sobbing "Christopher Reeve is dead..Christopher Reeve is dead!!" I was a teenager...silly and dumb. Getting upset over a movie. But...I was madly in love with Christopher Reeve. I remember watching the movie Superman IV: The Quest For Peace over and over again...probably 8 or 9 times...in a row...in the same day. I mean I loved Christopher Reeve. My Mom asked me, "How many times are you going to watch that movie?" I said, "I don't know...I just love the movie". Then in 2004 Christopher Reeve did die. Oh God, I was absolutely heartbroken. I didn't want to believe it. I kept saying, "If only he had not been on that horse, he would still be alive and walking". It took me years to get up the nerve to watch this movie. The music is just so haunting and beautiful. I cry every time I hear it. Sorry for my "book". I Love You Christopher Reeve. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
This movie reaches into our being and soul to a place we didn't even know we had. Perhaps you will someday get to meet Christopher, 'Somewhere In Time.' I hope so.
He and I had many a conversations in a shop I managed with my wife at the time. He liked people who were real not fake. His wife Elaine also a great Lady. The only actor in the movie Mr. Plummer I called him he was the only class act. The other two I won't bother to mention.

I was just a kid when this hit the screen and have always wanted to go back in time... and STAY, since I saw it . Amazing what a good film can do to you. To me, Jane Seymour will always be Elise McKenna.
It is the smile the girl has in the photograph the thing that makes it special. She smiles as if saying to her onlooker: "Come I am waiting for You". Very nice to see and reflect.

My wedding music was based on the movie. I looked somewhere in time for my soul mate, I've found her and on Feb 14, 2016 it has been 28 years, and honestly its like i married her yesterday. I'm so grateful my somewhere in time is now, I love you Linda i always will.
A very dear family friend asked me and my daughter to play 30 minutes of flute and piano music while guests were being seated. She loved the Somewhere in Time themes so I arranged them for when the mothers were being seated. They were so appreciative and it’s a wonderful memory.
The concept of being infatuated with a dead woman's portrait, to going back in time, and then falling in love with the actual person, who, when her (past) portrait is being taken, is inspired by the sudden appearance of "the man of her dreams," having come from the future, is so creative and romantic, that I want to burst!
As a kid in school I was studying the civil war and I remember finding a portrait of a young man in uniform that just...idk...it just gave my heart a jolt. I am a writer so I wrote a poem just about his photograph. It left such an impact on me and the fact that it was taken so long ago made it so strangely interesting.

James Cameron apparently also thought so, when he later (After Somewhere In Time's release) made The Terminator. (Sarah Connor was thinking and speaking about the man she loved at the time she was photographed. And, John Connor later gave that picture to Kyle Reese.) The interesting thing about the book for Somewhere In Time (originally titled Bid Time Return) is that while it did have the element of Richard falling in love with Elise from the photo, there was not the element of Elise seeing Richard at the time the photo was taken.

Maybe so, but at the same time, it's that fact that gives the whole phenomenon it's essence and beauty. It cannot be touched by anything because it is a matter of subjective thought in every self-aware soul that ever came to be in this world.
I agree. Most of us, since we were young, have always held the dream of a person we'd face eternity with. Love is too small a word to describe the connectivity on a soul level. Those who have experienced a relation, no matter how brief, where the concept of time did not exist, know of whereof I speak. Reality seems to blur in the presence of that person with a union so intense. It gives me hope that such profound bonds cannot be dissolved by physical death.

I love this movie. Movie and soundtrack gives me a heartache, a longing for true human love, and a longing for intimacy with God. The music "speaks" of love, of the hearts longing, of human intimacy and of course the greatest intimacy one can have is love of God.
@ Linda Adams - There was a story behind that scene during the shooting (I saw it on IMDB a few years ago). Christopher Reeve was in the audience during that monologue. He was so shook up by her performance that he had to fly home to his wife to be with her (he had his plane on the island at the time)

@@robertromero8692 The problem with your story is that Matheson was not in love with her. Chris was. Chris was so moved he had to fly home in his plane (remember, no cars allowed) to convince himself that he still loved his wife.
Remarkably, she is still just as vibrant and as beautiful in 2021. She's on an infomercial. I have NEVER seen anyone age so well. She has talked about what she eats, very healthy. She must also exercise.
What chance are you referring to? Millions have been able to watch it. It's available to anyone who wants it. It has a devoted following, including a web site and Facebook pages. It didn't win awards from Hollywood, but who cares what they think?

It's easy to see and understand how someone could be captivated .. even fall in love with an image of someone from the past. And wish they could go back in time to be with that person. (I must confess I became smitten with a photograph of a man who lived decades before I was born, and wished he lived in my time so I could find him)
There is no way these two could not fall in love after doing this film. That is what I thought after viewing this movie countless times because it is my most favorite movie of all. Found out that was true.
Several times in my life, my mind has been captured by a woman. Twice at a dance, another while we were working on a charity project and got into one of those magic conversations, as well as a few other special moments. Sadly, all of them ended up with them on their merry way and me having to dig out of the slump they put me in. I first heard this soundtrack in a book store in Denver and knew I had to have it. Each time I watch the movie, I relate so deeply to his love for this picture/woman and how it suddenly is gone, leaving that emotional emptiness that can(and has) lasted for years.
Even if you don't like your photo taken, or your not that photogenic, its still good to have one taken from time to time, even if it's just to show you were here at some point : - )
An eerie coincidence: In the late 1940s, Richard Matheson was a journalism student at The University of Missouri. At the exact same time, the elderly Maude Adams was teaching drama at Stephens College. So, for several years, the two of them were literally within short walking distance of each other, but there's no evidence Matheson ever knowingly met her or knew who she was. Only 20 years later when he saw that picture of her, and became aware of who she was, did the genesis of this story happen. Matheson apparently worked this coincidence into the novel, having the character Richard remember crossing paths with an elderly Elise McKenna when he was a college student (and her apparently recognizing him). This became transformed into the famous opening scene of the movie, where the elderly Elise meets Richard and gives him the pocketwatch.
What the director didn't tell everyone was that this movie was done on a very minimal budget where the actors only received a base rate for their performances. That was the only way it made it to the screen and it has become somewhat of a cult classic.
A magical moment . The cameraman captured the precise moment when Richard Collier who played by the late Christopher Reeves to see such a deadly gorgeous female in that particular photograph. By comparison, are we able to repeat the same kind of action and meet that special someone who happens to be the love of our life.
This is a fabulous film! Truly, one of my all time FAVORITES! This photo scene is very memorable. The music, scenery, acting, costuming, etc... if all fantastic! I vacationed in Mackinac Island before seeing this film. That hotel is fabulous! The Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island - truly a MUST SEE! Love the fudge shops in the small town of Mackinac Island. This was one of my most memorable vacations - and I was probably in Junior High School when we visited this place! It is very enchanting! Loved it!

This is my all time favorite movie. First saw it when I was twelve. Cried my eyes out...and still do at 45. I've probably, realistically, seen this movie about 30 or so times. Oh...and my birthday just happens to be June 27th. :)
Interestingly despite the budget despite the fact it got on tv after the studio strike it is a timeless classic and one of the most talked about movies especially to those who love this movie like myself. John Barry had lost one of his parents and managed to come up with this score not long after their deaths, the music is so much the film too ! Simply inspirational
First saw this film as a child and answered so many questions about how I felt, why I felt the way I did, felt someone was missing and finally understanding that feeling and giving it some meaning. I still think while watching this film 'I know how you feel, yes that is familiar etc. I still say now (aged 48) that my one true love was in a different time and we have yet to be reunited (if we ever will) in this time
As a 12 year old, I remember seeing the Poster at the Movie Theatre when we would drive by. I saw the movie on HBO back then and never really saw it again until just recently. I feel strangely attached to this movie as if someone is trying to tell me something. Being deeply Spritual, I have come across much literature which points to Thoughts being able to be Manifested. Another great movie along the same lines, though it is not Romantic, is Dream a Little Dream with the 2 Corey’s. Basically, the message is clear. Be careful what you ask or think for cause you may just get it. As a 53 Year Old Man, Being on my 1ST Marriage still, I know that I don’t feel about my wife what Elise feels towards Richard. I have seen a few Women that I have felt this about. Pretty much one for every decade of my Existence. I have just been obligated to my Spouse as the Vows Say. I like many made the decision to marry based on my weakness as a person. Anyhow, I believe we are Immortal Souls and Anything is possible. Even Time Travel if you so desire. It pretty much is Asto-Projection of your Spritual Energy. Either One can Master themselves and Travel Like Richard did in this Movie or you just do it when your present body has ran its course. Either way, with all being said, a person with patients can and will have all the desires they want. It might take a Lifetime or 2 but if you believe, All Is Possible.

The photograph of Jayne Seymour used in the framed picture could not have been better chosen. In it she smiles in such a natural way she seems to be alive. I like the smile which is not overdone nor forced and which shows her beauty. But most of all what impresses me is the genious in choosing that particular picture.
The music is by Rachmaninov, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Truely opened my eyes for classical music. And it fits the movie perfectly because it is so melancholic and makes you think of the past. Whoever picked the music, I hope you got promoted.
Way back in my college days during the 90's when I first to watch this film from a friend's computer, I fell in love with the movie from then on...now that I cross to see from the youtube some clips of the movie and everything.. oh my! I want to watch this all over again. I hope I could see a nice copy of this undying classic love story of Richard and Elise.
That photo of Jane & the way it was done was so sweet. She was stunning in the picture, a very classy lady. One of the few of the twentieth century. The whole casting was excellent!! Love the movie!
One of the timeless classics. I urge any fan of this film to read the original novel Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson. A much deeper and darker tale and with a more reasonable and believable twist than the pocket watch which RM always regretted writing in the sceeenplay. When you read the novel you realise that more so that Richard Collier actually deceives Elise all along.. It is a love story but by him going back to find her he is in fact doing her to a life of loss, pain and bewilderment. A remake more closer to the novel would be fantastic with Netflix on board. Leonardo De Caprio and Amy Adams would be perfect. Pierce Brosnan as Robinson.
I watched this movie many years ago but i can still remember the name, the actor and actress in this movie. I can't forget that photo in the movie. The story is so romantic! So glad to be able to watch it here on CZcams. Thanks for the upload. So sad that Christopher Reeves has passed on. RIP.

When she first appeared as a Bond girl, I wasn't impressed; she was just some skinny gal with a pretty face. But over time she demonstrated her talent (and aged gracefully), and she was good with accents -- listen to her in character as Wallis Simpson, the American divorcée courted by the future King of Britain.

This movie should be seen by all time travel funs, as its bittersweet conclusion suggests that time travel as if would be possible, -is hearth breaking, and in fact you could realize that if you feel lonely in actual time, it would be dramatized in another time the way that could jeopardize your survival both emotionally and physically. I guess this is the consequence what the playwright interprets in this lovely story.
Such an amazingly beautiful woman and a great movie with such beautiful music , everytime I watch it though I can't help but think of Christopher Reeve , it's so sad how he ended up 😞😞😞
My half-brother, when discussing this movie for the first time, made me aware, and more appreciative, of the magic of the title, versus Matheson's original title of, "Bid Time Return." The watch had no beginning! The old woman gave it to Collier, but he had left it behind, so... "Somewhere In Time."
Crazy, I've seen bits and pieces of the movie in the past 20 years, I was intrigued but didn't really want to see it. So I finally saw it because of the pandemic, binge-watched shows, but wanted to see a movie, I heard the soundtrack from somewhere and it made me stream this movie about 2 months ago and I've watched it about 5x already, researched Mackinac Island, and planning to visit. Can't believe I waited this long to watch it with my wife. She loves time travel and an island with no motor vehicles is a definite must-visit.
My wife and I vacationed at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego specifically because that was the setting of the book. Never had heard of it, and never would have known to go there without Matheson's story. Can't wait to go back again in better times. The book is even more tragic in some ways than the fiilm, which is hard to believe, I know. Haven't been to Grand Hotel yet, but it's definitely a bucket list item. Amazing that a story can do that, right? It can be so emotionally engaging that you'd like to go there.

There are amazing things in the movie that aren't in the book, but great stuff is in the book that isn't in the movie. With the book it IS nice to read Richard's inner thoughts about what's happening. They're both great.
This movie and The Love Letter with Jennifer Jason Leigh are far and away the two best movies of this genre ever filmed. I'd put this one first but The Love Letter isn't all that far behind when you remember that unlike Somewhere in Time, it was a made-for-TV movie. And both films are based on classic time travel stories, this one from a novel and The Love Letter from a short story. I've watched both countless times and they never fail to entertain.
Of course, Jack Finney wrote "The Love Letter", and as an author he's any time-travel fan's iconic writer. And in "Somewhere in Time", the character of "Professor Finney" is named in honor of him. Matheson loved Finney, which is partly why he used self-hypnosis for time-travel, just like Finney did in "Time and Again."
@@peteg475 "From Time to Time" and "Time and Again"; I've read both of my copies of these books to the point that they're worn out. In my opinion they're quite a bit better than "Bid Time Return" which "Somewhere in Time" is loosely taken from. Don't get me wrong; Richard Matheson was a master story teller, I just thought Bid Time was a bit too dark.
@@peteg475 I didn't say tragic, it of course was meant to be tragic, the ending of the movie is as well. I just found it a bit too dark in the story telling and what the main character was going through, just an opinion. I agree on your second point, "Time and Again" was the superior story but both are still head and shoulders above other entries in the genre.
@@Gamble661 To each his own. Yeah, it's tough to write something that doesn't come off as dark when your main character has terminal brain cancer. Though I must say it was pretty exciting to go to the Coronado and get to sit on those ornate chairs he mentions in the book. They're still there, if you can believe it.
This movie is so special in many ways, finding that one true love; the actors, the time it was filmed in,MacInac Island, just a magical experiance for all.
Do a comparison of this snapshot with the one from: Maude Adams; the inspiration behind "Somewhere In Time", video. In that picture you can see Maude with a fan next to her face. In the above version Jane Seymour has a fan in her hand when her picture is taken.
Researching on how Richard Matheson wrote Bid Time Return after seeing the photo of Maude Adams is interesting because he wrote a full account of it. The development of Somewhere in Time from Matheson's novella is very successful. Incidentally, the only way to take a photo where it appears the subject is looking at you no matter where you are standing in the room is to have the subject look right into the lens of the camera.
Today is 100th year anniversary that they met near the Grand hotel Mackinac Island June 27th,2012 . I went to The Grand last week :) it was a great moment in my life .

My Mom asked me, "How many times are you going to watch that movie?"
I said, "I don't know...I just love the movie".
Then in 2004 Christopher Reeve did die.
Oh God, I was absolutely heartbroken.
I didn't want to believe it.
I kept saying, "If only he had not been on that horse, he would still be alive and walking".
It took me years to get up the nerve to watch this movie.
The music is just so haunting and beautiful.
I cry every time I hear it.

lets not forget the great Canadian Actor in this film Christopher Plummer - was magnificent in this film . The Casting was perfect
He and I had many a conversations in a shop I managed with my wife at the time. He liked people who were real not fake. His wife Elaine also a great Lady. The only actor in the movie Mr. Plummer I called him he was the only class act. The other two I won't bother to mention.

The music in this movie by John Barry is absolutely beautiful. How he never became Sir John Barry before he died was a great injustice.

A very dear family friend asked me and my daughter to play 30 minutes of flute and piano music while guests were being seated. She loved the Somewhere in Time themes so I arranged them for when the mothers were being seated. They were so appreciative and it’s a wonderful memory.

The concept of being infatuated with a dead woman's portrait, to going back in time, and then falling in love with the actual person, who, when her (past) portrait is being taken, is inspired by the sudden appearance of "the man of her dreams," having come from the future, is so creative and romantic, that I want to burst!
As a kid in school I was studying the civil war and I remember finding a portrait of a young man in uniform that just...idk...it just gave my heart a jolt. I am a writer so I wrote a poem just about his photograph. It left such an impact on me and the fact that it was taken so long ago made it so strangely interesting.

James Cameron apparently also thought so, when he later (After Somewhere In Time's release) made The Terminator. (Sarah Connor was thinking and speaking about the man she loved at the time she was photographed. And, John Connor later gave that picture to Kyle Reese.)
The interesting thing about the book for Somewhere In Time (originally titled Bid Time Return) is that while it did have the element of Richard falling in love with Elise from the photo, there was not the element of Elise seeing Richard at the time the photo was taken.

I agree. Most of us, since we were young, have always held the dream of a person we'd face eternity with. Love is too small a word to describe the connectivity on a soul level. Those who have experienced a relation, no matter how brief, where the concept of time did not exist, know of whereof I speak. Reality seems to blur in the presence of that person with a union so intense. It gives me hope that such profound bonds cannot be dissolved by physical death.

I love this movie. Movie and soundtrack gives me a heartache, a longing for true human love, and a longing for intimacy with God. The music "speaks" of love, of the hearts longing, of human intimacy and of course the greatest intimacy one can have is love of God.

@ Linda Adams - There was a story behind that scene during the shooting (I saw it on IMDB a few years ago). Christopher Reeve was in the audience during that monologue. He was so shook up by her performance that he had to fly home to his wife to be with her (he had his plane on the island at the time)

It's easy to see and understand how someone could be captivated .. even fall in love with an image of someone from the past. And wish they could go back in time to be with that person. (I must confess I became smitten with a photograph of a man who lived decades before I was born, and wished he lived in my time so I could find him)
There is no way these two could not fall in love after doing this film. That is what I thought after viewing this movie countless times because it is my most favorite movie of all. Found out that was true.

Several times in my life, my mind has been captured by a woman. Twice at a dance, another while we were working on a charity project and got into one of those magic conversations, as well as a few other special moments. Sadly, all of them ended up with them on their merry way and me having to dig out of the slump they put me in. I first heard this soundtrack in a book store in Denver and knew I had to have it. Each time I watch the movie, I relate so deeply to his love for this picture/woman and how it suddenly is gone, leaving that emotional emptiness that can(and has) lasted for years.
Even if you don't like your photo taken, or your not that photogenic, its still good to have one taken from time to time, even if it's just to show you were here at some point : - )

An eerie coincidence: In the late 1940s, Richard Matheson was a journalism student at The University of Missouri. At the exact same time, the elderly Maude Adams was teaching drama at Stephens College. So, for several years, the two of them were literally within short walking distance of each other, but there's no evidence Matheson ever knowingly met her or knew who she was. Only 20 years later when he saw that picture of her, and became aware of who she was, did the genesis of this story happen. Matheson apparently worked this coincidence into the novel, having the character Richard remember crossing paths with an elderly Elise McKenna when he was a college student (and her apparently recognizing him). This became transformed into the famous opening scene of the movie, where the elderly Elise meets Richard and gives him the pocketwatch.
What the director didn't tell everyone was that this movie was done on a very minimal budget where the actors only received a base rate for their performances. That was the only way it made it to the screen and it has become somewhat of a cult classic.

A magical moment . The cameraman captured the precise moment when Richard Collier who played by the late Christopher Reeves to see such a deadly gorgeous female in that particular photograph.

I vacationed in Mackinac Island before seeing this film. That hotel is fabulous! The Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island - truly a MUST SEE! Love the fudge shops in the small town of Mackinac Island. This was one of my most memorable vacations - and I was probably in Junior High School when we visited this place! It is very enchanting! Loved it!

One of the most beautiful films ever made
This is my all time favorite movie. First saw it when I was twelve. Cried my eyes out...and still do at 45. I've probably, realistically, seen this movie about 30 or so times. Oh...and my birthday just happens to be June 27th. :)
Interestingly despite the budget despite the fact it got on tv after the studio strike it is a timeless classic and one of the most talked about movies especially to those who love this movie like myself. John Barry had lost one of his parents and managed to come up with this score not long after their deaths, the music is so much the film too ! Simply inspirational
First saw this film as a child and answered so many questions about how I felt, why I felt the way I did, felt someone was missing and finally understanding that feeling and giving it some meaning. I still think while watching this film 'I know how you feel, yes that is familiar etc. I still say now (aged 48) that my one true love was in a different time and we have yet to be reunited (if we ever will) in this time
As a 12 year old, I remember seeing the Poster at the Movie Theatre when we would drive by. I saw the movie on HBO back then and never really saw it again until just recently. I feel strangely attached to this movie as if someone is trying to tell me something. Being deeply Spritual, I have come across much literature which points to Thoughts being able to be Manifested. Another great movie along the same lines, though it is not Romantic, is Dream a Little Dream with the 2 Corey’s. Basically, the message is clear. Be careful what you ask or think for cause you may just get it. As a 53 Year Old Man, Being on my 1ST Marriage still, I know that I don’t feel about my wife what Elise feels towards Richard. I have seen a few Women that I have felt this about. Pretty much one for every decade of my Existence. I have just been obligated to my Spouse as the Vows Say. I like many made the decision to marry based on my weakness as a person. Anyhow, I believe we are Immortal Souls and Anything is possible. Even Time Travel if you so desire. It pretty much is Asto-Projection of your Spritual Energy. Either One can Master themselves and Travel Like Richard did in this Movie or you just do it when your present body has ran its course. Either way, with all being said, a person with patients can and will have all the desires they want. It might take a Lifetime or 2 but if you believe, All Is Possible.

I had friends who wanted to astral project. I wanted to do it so much, about 6 years ago. Heard many stories that it actually leads to demonic possession and/or influence. Some will present themselves as masters of wisdom, ascended masters, family relatives, off-world beings, higher dimensional beings, aliens, higher self.... and a whole host of other types and names. (I've heard them all and seen their fruits.) Alternatively one may simply go right to the top and become the obedient slave of Lucifer.
On the bottom levels of "self-mastery", you think it's all about yourself, and your own life, your success. But you are in truth serving the fallen "god" of this world. And as he is going to the lake of fire, so too are his followers. Unfortunately many deceived humans, who believe they have found the "ultimate truth".

Yeah this sounds like the perfect description of the service to self path. Selfishness, self-interest, self-centeredness, narcissism, psychopathy.
And as there is no more than this particular life to make a right choice - you better chose wisely. Do you chose your own wisdom or God's wisdom?
Do you chose the things that come from a fallen race (humankind) or do you choose the things that come from a perfect Creator, who is above all the drama and the corruption?
Do you chose between the simple salvation of Jesus Christ, or the complex path (got to earn your way up the ladder, only to find out you were not on the right path to begin with and had thus suffered terrible trauma at the hands of the darkness you had mistakenly delved into)?
God does not allow fallen beings to "run around" His universe, doing whatever they want. The universe is His creation, and it is kept pure.
Therefore, there are rules and laws which must be followed. And they are not found in the false teachings you are currently studying.
As I was pulled out by God and made to see that all paths lead to death, except Jesus Christ, so can you.
Do you value your life enough to ask the question, to admit to the possibility of having gone in the wrong direction?
Think well friend. You only have one life. As God beautifully teaches us: life itself is the most precious gift of existence.
It is not to be abused. Since God Himself is the giver of life, life is only to be found with Him. Nowhere else.
Then don't see the movie. Its not for you don't get it

The photograph of Jayne Seymour used in the framed picture could not have been better chosen. In it she smiles in such a natural way she seems to be alive. I like the smile which is not overdone nor forced and which shows her beauty. But most of all what impresses me is the genious in choosing that particular picture.
The music is by Rachmaninov, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Truely opened my eyes for classical music. And it fits the movie perfectly because it is so melancholic and makes you think of the past. Whoever picked the music, I hope you got promoted.
Long Evenings, when Elise tells Richard in the rowboat that’s she had not heard that piece before, it’s because it was not composed until the 1930s.

Way back in my college days during the 90's when I first to watch this film from a friend's computer, I fell in love with the movie from then on...now that I cross to see from the youtube some clips of the movie and everything.. oh my! I want to watch this all over again. I hope I could see a nice copy of this undying classic love story of Richard and Elise.
That photo of Jane & the way it was done was so sweet. She was stunning in the picture, a very classy lady. One of the few of the twentieth century. The whole casting was excellent!! Love the movie!

One of the timeless classics. I urge any fan of this film to read the original novel Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson. A much deeper and darker tale and with a more reasonable and believable twist than the pocket watch which RM always regretted writing in the sceeenplay.
When you read the novel you realise that more so that Richard Collier actually deceives Elise all along..
It is a love story but by him going back to find her he is in fact doing her to a life of loss, pain and bewilderment. A remake more closer to the novel would be fantastic with Netflix on board.
Leonardo De Caprio and Amy Adams would be perfect. Pierce Brosnan as Robinson.

When she first appeared as a Bond girl, I wasn't impressed; she was just some skinny gal with a pretty face. But over time she demonstrated her talent (and aged gracefully), and she was good with accents -- listen to her in character as Wallis Simpson, the American divorcée courted by the future King of Britain.

There are so many magical moments in this film!
This movie should be seen by all time travel funs, as its bittersweet conclusion suggests that time travel as if would be possible, -is hearth breaking, and in fact you could realize that if you feel lonely in actual time, it would be dramatized in another time the way that could jeopardize your survival both emotionally and physically.
I guess this is the consequence what the playwright interprets in this lovely story.

My half-brother, when discussing this movie for the first time, made me aware, and more appreciative, of the magic of the title, versus Matheson's original title of, "Bid Time Return." The watch had no beginning! The old woman gave it to Collier, but he had left it behind, so... "Somewhere In Time."
While I love this movie, I can't watch it now that Christopher Reeve is gone.
Chris faces is as magnificent and spectacular even more than hers as he stares at HERS.we caught him at his most beautiful also.....

GOOGLE, I HAVE A VERY STRESSFUL WAY TO GO TO COME BACK TO THIS WORLD........YEARS.
Crazy, I've seen bits and pieces of the movie in the past 20 years, I was intrigued but didn't really want to see it. So I finally saw it because of the pandemic, binge-watched shows, but wanted to see a movie, I heard the soundtrack from somewhere and it made me stream this movie about 2 months ago and I've watched it about 5x already, researched Mackinac Island, and planning to visit. Can't believe I waited this long to watch it with my wife. She loves time travel and an island with no motor vehicles is a definite must-visit.
My wife and I vacationed at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego specifically because that was the setting of the book. Never had heard of it, and never would have known to go there without Matheson's story. Can't wait to go back again in better times. The book is even more tragic in some ways than the fiilm, which is hard to believe, I know. Haven't been to Grand Hotel yet, but it's definitely a bucket list item. Amazing that a story can do that, right? It can be so emotionally engaging that you'd like to go there.

There are amazing things in the movie that aren't in the book, but great stuff is in the book that isn't in the movie. With the book it IS nice to read Richard's inner thoughts about what's happening. They're both great.
This movie and The Love Letter with Jennifer Jason Leigh are far and away the two best movies of this genre ever filmed. I'd put this one first but The Love Letter isn't all that far behind when you remember that unlike Somewhere in Time, it was a made-for-TV movie.
And both films are based on classic time travel stories, this one from a novel and The Love Letter from a short story. I've watched both countless times and they never fail to entertain.
Of course, Jack Finney wrote "The Love Letter", and as an author he's any time-travel fan's iconic writer. And in "Somewhere in Time", the character of "Professor Finney" is named in honor of him. Matheson loved Finney, which is partly why he used self-hypnosis for time-travel, just like Finney did in "Time and Again."
@@peteg475 "From Time to Time" and "Time and Again"; I've read both of my copies of these books to the point that they're worn out. In my opinion they're quite a bit better than "Bid Time Return" which "Somewhere in Time" is loosely taken from. Don't get me wrong; Richard Matheson was a master story teller, I just thought Bid Time was a bit too dark.
@@Gamble661 Well, it's supposed to be tragic, which I get isn't everyone's cup of tea. I like "Time and Again", but the sequel not so much.
@@peteg475 I didn't say tragic, it of course was meant to be tragic, the ending of the movie is as well. I just found it a bit too dark in the story telling and what the main character was going through, just an opinion.
I agree on your second point, "Time and Again" was the superior story but both are still head and shoulders above other entries in the genre.
@@Gamble661 To each his own. Yeah, it's tough to write something that doesn't come off as dark when your main character has terminal brain cancer. Though I must say it was pretty exciting to go to the Coronado and get to sit on those ornate chairs he mentions in the book. They're still there, if you can believe it.

Do a comparison of this snapshot with the one from: Maude Adams; the inspiration behind "Somewhere In Time", video. In that picture you can see Maude with a fan next to her face. In the above version Jane Seymour has a fan in her hand when her picture is taken.

Researching on how Richard Matheson wrote Bid Time Return after seeing the photo of Maude Adams is interesting because he wrote a full account of it. The development of Somewhere in Time from Matheson's novella is very successful. Incidentally, the only way to take a photo where it appears the subject is looking at you no matter where you are standing in the room is to have the subject look right into the lens of the camera.
Today is 100th year anniversary that they met near the Grand hotel Mackinac Island June 27th,2012 . I went to The Grand last week :) it was a great moment in my life .
