Peter is the best in the biz and my favorite bonsai personality. He is constantly sharing so much wisdom, and without trying to capitalize on it. Peter is a true gentleman. I love the fact that he refuses to fall into the elitist mentality of making hard and fast "rules". Peter has learned over the years that there is no "one way" to do something. He does not promote the "know-it-all" mindset. Most experienced individuals of his caliber in intellect, realize that you continue to learn things even into your last days on this earth. That is a true sign of wisdom based in experience. We love you Peter! Keep doing what you do. Vivre la vie!

But I definitely enjoy the insight and am taking your thoughts as I embark on my bonsai journey. I have both your master class and your Japanese gardens books, and absolutely love them! Thanks for this great video explaining bonsai to folks who don't know much about them. I especially loved learning about the stem cell and the reduction in amount of cells from reduced leaves. I have been growing bonsai for about 20 years and didn't know that. I knew about redirecting the tree's energy through the manipulation of auxin bt trimming apical growth but hearing this leads to a reduction of total cells was quite enlightening.

I just mix good potting-soil + cactus-soil(which has a lot of pumice). Nice, easy and super simple.
Cactus soil for drainage. Pumice by itself isn’t available at big-box hardware stores (only at specialty bonsai stores)... but, cactus-soil is always available at hardware stores and has plenty of pumice in it.
Potting-soil I use has a lot of sphagnum peat moss, fir bark, redwood, rock, sand, and many other nice ingredients (worm castings, kelp, bat guano, feather meal, etc.)
All the special and usual bonsai aggregates (Akadama, Japanese lava rock, etc.) is much too expensive for me in big amounts (since I only grow big niwaki and use huge 15-30gallon pots), and also not available at big-box hardware stores...
I learned this “potting-soil + cactus-soil” tip from an old time JBP farm grower (he grows thousands of JBPs and other bonsai from seedling)

@@NightTimeDay Diff countries use diff brands I'm sure... but if you're in the US, my fave is EB Stone, for both potting-soil and cactus-soil... very high quality stuff with real pumice and lava rock (not the cheap and lightweight perlite) and other goodies. Same price as the cheap Home Depot Miracle Gro stuff too.
If you can't find EB Stone at a local nursery.. then Kellogg brand cactus-soil at HD is good because it uses real pumice and not perlite.. and any potting soil, Miracle Gro, etc.
Perlite is okay... it's just super light, floats on water and washes away during rain/watering.

Hands down the most helpful bonsai video I've ever seen, thankyou so much for sharing this!
I tried growing bonsai a few times, never had any luck. Even with visiting local bonsai store (owner would not provide ANY helpful advice, just watched me like he thought I would steal things)
With all the info on here I think I might try it again now that Australian summer is ending
