  • WDTR was a radio station owned by Detroit Public Schools. It started out in 1948, airing educational shows during the day and music at night.
The programming changed with the passing of time and pop culture trends.
In 2004 WDTR changed it's call sign to WRCJ-FM and changed it's programming to classical & jazz music. Then in 2017, Detroit Public Schools sold the station's license to a non-profit LLC called Detroit Classical & Jazz Educational Radio.
They continue on the air to this day on 90.9fm, with the slogan
    "Classical Days, Jazzy Nights."
The non-profit's studios are in the Detroit School of Arts building in Midtown.
The old building we explore here, built in the 1940's in the Jamison neighborhood of Detroit, has sat abandoned since 2017.

Disclaimer: Pinetop Jackson does not break into buildings.
Every location we document is open with no sings warning against trespassing present at the time of visit. We do not vandalize. While we do respect some of the graffiti encountered, we do not practice this art.
Our goal and our intent is to document these historically significant locations for posterity, and we enter them with respect.
We take nothing but photos (and video!) and leave nothing but footprints.

I attended the elementary school right next door in the late 90s. We had a radio show called Brady Jamzz. Mr. Tom Wilson came over once a week to record it with us. We did a few episodes inside of that building. I’ve actually always wished I could get the tapes of the recordings we did. Thanks for doing this. This punched me right in the feels.

Those Valentino/Major sound effects records were the mainstay of audio/radio/film/television production for decades. The recordings are still available in modern form.

The first scene when pulling the EAS book out of the rubble looked like something from a post-nuke flick. Pretty cool!
