Driving BMW’s €2,000,000 Flying Superboat! 🛸 TYDE The Icon

- čas přidán 2. 06. 2024
- The Icon by Tyde is a 42ft BMW-designed all-electric foiling superboat utterly unlike anything we’ve seen before.
In this exclusive sea trial, Jack Haines gets behind the spaceship style helm to find out what it’s like to pilot this extraordinary machine.
With six BMW i3 batteries tucked below the deck and twin Torqeedo Deep Blue 100kW motors powering counter-rotating propellers, the top speed is 30 knots. The Icon foils at 18 knots and cruises at 24 knots for a range of 50nm.
On board, the view out of the glass house is spectacular, the deck space dominated by the Star Trek helm station and it’s 32in, 6k screen. Elsewhere, there is passenger seating for six people. No galley, no wet bar and nowhere to sleep but one of the most extraordinary cruising experiences you could hope to have.
Stop reading this now, though, and watch the video, it really needs to be seen to be believed.

Sailing boats would like to have a word with you, sir
Fair point 👏
Oh, wow. Not a fan of motorboats usually, but this design is so freaking out of the box. That's a pieve of art!
You definitely missed on a "My name is Haines, Jack Haines" opportunity here :D
I really did 🤦♂️ - Jack
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
Watching this, I couldn't help but think how cool this would be as a slightly larger Trimaran. It was beautifully smooth while on the foils but once stationary, it moved quite a lot side to side.
Started making me seasick.
They could separate the trimaran hull from the superstructure and have a type of gimbal (stewart platform) in between to eliminate all motion when stationary.
I think the idea of this is mostly to keep moving from A to B. With no heads onboard, it would make sense that this is a short-trip vessel, and not one to spend loads of hours on. Perhaps more like a tender to transport from superyacht to shore and back again?
Needs shark teeth on the bow
Completely impracticable, strange, and equally amazing. If you consider the cost that car companies pay to create a vision of the future then 2 million is virtually good value. And on top of that it works and functions.
That boat would be the perfect choice for like a chartered dinner cruise along a coast line. One captain/host going slowly down the ocean with a very nice meal and drinks.
no bathroom though
@@chrisc7265 true
I don't even know what to say for this "boat" except.... I want a ride!
The lack of a wake is impressive.
All that glass you'd expect would require a ton of air conditioning.
makes zero sense ..
@@storytimewithunclekumaran5004 ever been in a greenhouse?
@@chrisc7265 Yes I run a floating greenhouse operation growing tomatoes in northern Canada and its the largest tomato greenhouse in Canada.. Also I approve of C02. Air con is a power hungry device..Probably not such a great idea in a power limited situation.
Oh 1,000 %
As a yacht tender? Maybe! As a water taxi? Ok! As a private boat, just a gimmick! As a commuter down the Dubia ? Yeah I could see it! At $2 million? Why? If you could link them together in an office configuration in Dubai on! But for $2 mil I want all the things missing, oh and the other come with a desk to work at!
Nice weather toy, takes all the pleasure of a real boat ride away!
Astonishing! What a remarkable vessel and a fascinating appraisal too. A tantalising glimpse of the future? Thanks Jack and team
Thanks for watching! - Jack
This future is ONLY for the happy few robber barons and their WEF minions .... Your future is the 15 minute city and facemasks with lockdowns.....
If it goes as good as their cars it will be stranded within a few Nm ..
Finally we can see the ultra rich being taxied around like in sci-fi movies and games :D
Surely this will be used in a bond movie or something.
Kinda puts a smile on your face seeing stuff like this.
GREAT CONCEPT -- THE FUTURE LOOK BRIGHT!
Just amazing. Love the inside night shots looks like a spaceship. Let’s see a day boat version as well 🎉
Wow that really is amazing! Can't wait to see how this type of tech evolves.
What tech? You mean hydrofoils which have been in use since the 1950's? Or battery electric drive which is an environmental disaster in boating, and never in any way financially viable? Or glass windows?
@@pistonburner6448 People confuse technology and design. The technology is the electric drive - which has been around for a while. Technology is not really important or useful in it's self - it's when it is turned into a product that it becomes something important. Computer mice and Graphical Interfaces existed for a decade before Apple turned them into a product. Sabine Hassenfelder has a good video on why Capitalism is Good that goes more into this in general. These will become like Teslas - they will serve as a symbol for a certain class of people, but aren't a serious general purpose car. On the other hand a Prius is. They are the in demand car for NYC Taxis. You will see these in elite settings and in parts of Asia where image is more immediately important than the actual practicality of them. You could expect a few here in NYC as a modern Commuter Boat between NYC and the Hamptons and points in between.
@@pistonburner6448 Name another boat like this. Electric motors are superior to internal combustion engines and they're just at the start of their journey where countries, especially China, are ploughing money into motors, batteries and charging.
If we're talking about environmenmtal disaster, that's the oil industry for you. China are already producing small family cars with battery packs that can do 400 miles and don't use Cobalt or Nickel.
The rate at which battery capacity, kilowatt hours are increasing while prices and charging times are decreasing is outstripping any room for improvement of internal combustion engines that rely on petrol and diesel.
The second thing you fail to factor in is the price of oil is being controlled by OPEC+, led by Russia and Saudi Arabia and they're cutting production by millions of barrels to push up prices. If the USA continues to unilaterally sanction whatever country it wants, countries, especially oil producers, will push back, dumping the petro dollar.
BRICS with it's 6 new members will control 40% of the global reserves of oil and 30% of it's consumption. When Venezuela joins, and they will join, BRICS will control 67% of global oil reserves. What's the US gonna do, sanction BRICS countries and in doing so, the countries that control two thirds of global reserves? How do you think they'll respond? By cutting production, pushing up costs in the West while seling to each other cheaply. So unless you live in a BRICS country or the global south, you'll be paying more and more for oil products, one more reason why electric motors are the way ahead.
@@pistonburner6448 With those glass windows you can roast pork in the Med in the summer.
It's like a Tesla truck mated with my grandparents' living room from West Palm Beach in the 90s. The foiling drive and controls are great. However, I guess I'm just not cultured enough to appreciate the interior design elements.
Cool! Thank you for the overview. Your commentary and production was top drawer.
Glad you enjoyed it, Todd, thanks! - Jack
Would love to see a helm like that on a ‘proper boat’
Staggering piece of design, and some great ideas for the future.
OK. This electric foil boat WINS for unique style and futuristic design. Not a boat ready for the masses but these reality 'concept' boats stretch the mind of possibility and will impact future designs of production ready boats. Kudos.
Amazing design, and brilliant execution. Love that big windowed cabin. It would be excellent as a cruise boat for scenic tourism, perhaps in cooler climates where getting outdoors is more challenging for guests. But in any real world that rear deck would be legally required to have a railing around it.
Navier have a similar, smaller but probably more manoeuvrable electric foiler.
That's something unique and foward thinking
This combined with some future solar panels and some nice bed, small kitchen, small bathroom… dream tiny house on steroids
incredible !!
The ultimate commuter ;)
In my dreams, wow love it.
I think that's amazing thanks for that.
Super whacky and idk how practical it is but its definitely beautiful and futuristic...
It looks like it would be an amazing driving experience and the interior with the wide open views is breathtaking......id like to see these become a reality
WOW! Thanks Jack!
You're welcome! ☺️
Great design. Salt water is to batteries what great white sharks are to seals and surfers off the Australian coast.
Hahahaha mate you’re spot on there!
Great video. Very interesting “boat”.. .question not answered though is what happens if you hit a wave that is higher than your clearance. Just a random wake could do that. . .do you slow down and take it like man, or let nature rip the foiled off the bottom of the boat as the wave pushes the hull up? With retractable foils they could raise the boat higher on rougher days. . .until then, I would taking this thing too far from the dock.
Love It. A Yacht towable version would super cool. As a tender it needs a little bit more seating.
This is awesome
Love it! Santa, need ya buddy! 😅
AMAZING!!!!
That is awesome
It would make a nice tour boat/water taxi for some high rollers as is. Beyond that, It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.
Very cool boat for certain.
I love how he uses what is basically an inflatable raft with a motor as a comparison to how smooth the multi million dollar superboat travels across the water.
They are called a 'rubber-ducky', inflatable speed-boat and they are as common as muck. Not a raft.
Bravo! ❤your openness to future tech and to see BMW entering the marine world. On which, it would be curious to see if BMW adapt their Hydrogen tech (their car tech from the late 90’s, gathering mothballs). On this Tide, its fascinating. Perhaps impractical now, but a promise for the future. ❤ foiling! Cant wait to see more. Is it a luxury candela? Keep up the good work. Best.
The quality and production of the video is fantastic, wel done . Lisboa Portugal
Thank you very much! 🇵🇹
wow, this is the future
It’s a floating dining room/cocktail lounge and I enjoy both. 👍🏻
Great video of this amazing vessel! It would make more sense to have the helm positioned at the bow and build it as a catamaran. Everything in the future should have a hydrofoil system.
Very posh and luxurious but efficient and boardroom almost.
Very nice for an on water meeting/ business deal.
Or quick travel ❤
Fit for me👑
Awesome ❣️😲
Very interesting hydrofoil 👌🏼
Love from Berlin 🇩🇪
Ramsi 🙋🏻♂️
Got the name right , very cool .
If a miracle happened and I won the lottery. This would be my studio. I’d go up and down the coast making music with random people. New dream acquired
Brilliant! What a great toy!
That 'dashboard' screen is lovely.
EPIC
Please! someone buy me this boat, it is without a doubt the most amazing craft iv ever witnessed in this life. Excellent design.
How big must the foil be to handle a containership. Or will a lot of small ones do the trick as well ?
As that pointy eared chap would say, 'fascinating'.
I like It for what it is, a luxurious taxi but I wouldn't want one myself, I'm still stuck on watching your Sargo 45 vid at least twice a week. 👏👏👍❤️🇬🇧
"The possibilities are endless.!"
Excellent video
Thank you very much! 🙏
Love this boat! !
Love the large window for an incredible scenery!
😍💖⚡️⛵️⚡️💖🔋🌞💯👍
😉💖⚡️🌏✌️
Pretty cool concept. Would be smart if they could use the Sharrow propeller's design for even more efficiency over the Torqeedos.
The boat is a wow
Wow, this is truly a revolutionary design! I can totally envision this as an upscale taxi boat for harbors, offering a unique and efficient transportation experience. However, as breathtaking as it is, I personally find it a bit challenging to imagine myself relaxing on board. It seems more like an exhilarating ride than a laid-back cruiser. Nonetheless, hats off to the creators for pushing the boundaries!
Beautiful boat, but I won't take it cruising around the Bahamas... sand bars, coral head... y'all got the point. But it would be a perfect boat for the islands with some improvements. 😊
Coming from an industrial design background, I really love when talented designers take a crack at it because they killed it with the design. I just would like to see a scaled up version and variants (a day boat, like you cited) beyond just a ferry/shuttle style deisgn.
This would've felt like a natural fit in Tron, Oblivion (Daniel Simon), or in WestWorld (the show didn't have the best design, but it is a contemporary example, hahaha).
Seems best suited to tender duty for a mega yacht. Are there actual high end resort shuttle needs really?
I love it.
How will it handle in 8' seas? How will the windows hold against a 10' rogue wave?
She looks revolutionary, I'm sure the technology will make it into other designers'plans for boats. She looks safe and comfortable but the shape of the cabin a 🔺 is odd, but she looks amazing. Somehow they need as you suggested Jack a toilet and a bar even if she is a shuttle, and solar panels are good addition.
At night she looks woth hef lights very Star Trek.
Cool
wonder if it has some sort of detection for like debris up front ahead like logs or things that can damage the front hydrofoil wing 🤔
A warm glass of champagne is an absolutely amazing experience 😮
Really needs retractable foils for shallow water operation which will be what this kind of a boat will be.
I literally thought the boat was CGI...what the hell the design is out of this world
Looks like the controls should be right in the front of the boat for the driving experience and put in a nice bathroom and a kitchenette in the blind spots with a nice living room with a king size bed with solar panels on top for emergency backup with retractable foils and you might be on to something
The floor down is definitely impressive and like you said make a real boat out of the top and you’re probably right it has a place as a day and weekend boat
Thats some tender 😮
As a prototype, it's interesting. Still at this point it's not good for much. Sort of hard to fish off of it. You cannot sleep on it. As you said, it doesn't have a bathroom. I'm wondering if it needs gas engines and the placement of wings on the top to help increase the lift and the speed. Well I can only imagine the cost is astronomical. This had better be designed down the road to be sold to the ultra rich with purpose (or not). Thanks for the video.
I was thinking the same thing. It's basically a floating sun-room for millionaires lol I'll take my 10ft pedal drive fishing kayak over that thing any day 🎣
The bulb foiling is the real revolution: you can see how is this stable in comparison with others foiling boats
This looks like an 80’s Miami living room.
The sea doesn't get calmer than that, and I think that's the only sea you could use It on.
I am still wondering how a person can get this into dock, the side has glass and nothing really there for the person to go to the side to tie a knot, therefore in some sircumstances the captain will need to think better because of the wind since he cannot tie a knot from the middle or the front. Does the person well i guess captain need a person to help him on the dock to get this boat tied up to place? i guess the person would need to use the back ones first, which might not be handy in some perspectives.
Not a huge fan of the interior but a foil of that size on a motorboat is incredible. I would not be surprised if foils become much more popular in the near future.
Essentially it’s a floating greenhouse…
I bet it gets HOT on board.
2 person taxi of the future lol
1. Cover the roof with in-glass photovoltaic panels (like in the Arcadia A-Series)
2. Figure out how to increase the battery capacity/range to 150NM
3. Seating? 🤔
4. Replace sitting desk with small galley (fridge, microwave, cabinet)
5. Replace standing desk with head
6. Frosted glass shower on swim deck
7. Propane grill and fridge on Swim deck
8. Retractable foils
Add these features, and they'd have so many orders that they'd be backlogged for the next decade
A floating living room, and it does the foil thing! Not bad, makes me wish I had a spare 2 mil!
4 seasons bora bora needs a fleet of these
i fall in love.
Even the powerful ac can't cast a shadow and protect you from sun rays. One has to use it in spring or autumn, definitely not summer or does it have blinders?
Cool boat. Aquila should do something similar with their 36 catamaran.
Love
❤ imagine this thing with a nano-reactor replenishing the batteries when needed ❤
they should be using the water moving against the boat to generate electricity to be put back in the batteries while cruising. looks amazing!!
Be great as a river cruiser, but anything with even a slight swell will roll this thing like crazy
Love it but it’s falling short, if it were bigger and had a head or some sort of privacy area aft it would be a little more palatable. The power system probably could be some sort of hybrid electric. At least you would be able to charge the batteries on the generator as I don’t believe there are fast chargers in a port.
I could see this as a luxury hotel ferry in the Maldives.
It's a cool concept and I love it, but there are also things I don't like about it such as the blind spot and the range. It would be cool to see more solar panels on it and perhaps a high resolution digital camera at the aft for rear view and one at the bow to nullify that blind spot with live feeds to the main monitor or perhaps a secondary monitor. Really cool concept though
I'm not much for exotics but I like it.
Has the right shaped roof to extend outwards, like a wing, say 10ft to give it extra lift and glide capabilities. Might make it more battery efficient? 2nd prototype!
Genial
Just wondering, where(how) do you charge this thing, and how long does it take to charge it?
It will charge in 5-6 hours via a standard marina shorepower connection; faster with a super charger.
