Driving BMW’s €2,000,000 Flying Superboat! 🛸 TYDE The Icon

  • The Icon by Tyde is a 42ft BMW-designed all-electric foiling superboat utterly unlike anything we’ve seen before.
    In this exclusive sea trial, Jack Haines gets behind the spaceship style helm to find out what it’s like to pilot this extraordinary machine.
    With six BMW i3 batteries tucked below the deck and twin Torqeedo Deep Blue 100kW motors powering counter-rotating propellers, the top speed is 30 knots. The Icon foils at 18 knots and cruises at 24 knots for a range of 50nm.
    On board, the view out of the glass house is spectacular, the deck space dominated by the Star Trek helm station and it’s 32in, 6k screen. Elsewhere, there is passenger seating for six people. No galley, no wet bar and nowhere to sleep but one of the most extraordinary cruising experiences you could hope to have.
    Stop reading this now, though, and watch the video, it really needs to be seen to be believed.

      I think the idea of this is mostly to keep moving from A to B. With no heads onboard, it would make sense that this is a short-trip vessel, and not one to spend loads of hours on. Perhaps more like a tender to transport from superyacht to shore and back again?

      What tech? You mean hydrofoils which have been in use since the 1950's? Or battery electric drive which is an environmental disaster in boating, and never in any way financially viable? Or glass windows?

    • @rtbinc2273
      @rtbinc2273 Před 8 měsíci

      @@pistonburner6448 People confuse technology and design. The technology is the electric drive - which has been around for a while. Technology is not really important or useful in it's self - it's when it is turned into a product that it becomes something important. Computer mice and Graphical Interfaces existed for a decade before Apple turned them into a product. Sabine Hassenfelder has a good video on why Capitalism is Good that goes more into this in general. These will become like Teslas - they will serve as a symbol for a certain class of people, but aren't a serious general purpose car. On the other hand a Prius is. They are the in demand car for NYC Taxis. You will see these in elite settings and in parts of Asia where image is more immediately important than the actual practicality of them. You could expect a few here in NYC as a modern Commuter Boat between NYC and the Hamptons and points in between.

    • @captainwin6333
      @captainwin6333 Před 8 měsíci

      @@pistonburner6448 Name another boat like this. Electric motors are superior to internal combustion engines and they're just at the start of their journey where countries, especially China, are ploughing money into motors, batteries and charging.
      If we're talking about environmenmtal disaster, that's the oil industry for you. China are already producing small family cars with battery packs that can do 400 miles and don't use Cobalt or Nickel.
      The rate at which battery capacity, kilowatt hours are increasing while prices and charging times are decreasing is outstripping any room for improvement of internal combustion engines that rely on petrol and diesel.
      The second thing you fail to factor in is the price of oil is being controlled by OPEC+, led by Russia and Saudi Arabia and they're cutting production by millions of barrels to push up prices. If the USA continues to unilaterally sanction whatever country it wants, countries, especially oil producers, will push back, dumping the petro dollar.
      BRICS with it's 6 new members will control 40% of the global reserves of oil and 30% of it's consumption. When Venezuela joins, and they will join, BRICS will control 67% of global oil reserves. What's the US gonna do, sanction BRICS countries and in doing so, the countries that control two thirds of global reserves? How do you think they'll respond? By cutting production, pushing up costs in the West while seling to each other cheaply. So unless you live in a BRICS country or the global south, you'll be paying more and more for oil products, one more reason why electric motors are the way ahead.

It would be excellent as a cruise boat for scenic tourism, perhaps in cooler climates where getting outdoors is more challenging for guests. Just a random wake could do that. . .do you slow down and take it like man, or let nature rip the foiled off the bottom of the boat as the wave pushes the hull up? With retractable foils they could raise the boat higher on rougher days. . .until then, I would taking this thing too far from the dock.

Does the person well i guess captain need a person to help him on the dock to get this boat tied up to place? i guess the person would need to use the back ones first, which might not be handy in some perspectives.

    6. Frosted glass shower on swim deck
    7. Propane grill and fridge on Swim deck
    8. Retractable foils
    Add these features, and they'd have so many orders that they'd be backlogged for the next decade

    A floating living room, and it does the foil thing! Not bad, makes me wish I had a spare 2 mil!

    Even the powerful ac can't cast a shadow and protect you from sun rays. One has to use it in spring or autumn, definitely not summer or does it have blinders?

    Cool boat. Aquila should do something similar with their 36 catamaran.

    ❤ imagine this thing with a nano-reactor replenishing the batteries when needed ❤

    they should be using the water moving against the boat to generate electricity to be put back in the batteries while cruising. looks amazing!!

    Be great as a river cruiser, but anything with even a slight swell will roll this thing like crazy

    Love it but it’s falling short, if it were bigger and had a head or some sort of privacy area aft it would be a little more palatable. The power system probably could be some sort of hybrid electric. At least you would be able to charge the batteries on the generator as I don’t believe there are fast chargers in a port.

    I could see this as a luxury hotel ferry in the Maldives.

    It's a cool concept and I love it, but there are also things I don't like about it such as the blind spot and the range. It would be cool to see more solar panels on it and perhaps a high resolution digital camera at the aft for rear view and one at the bow to nullify that blind spot with live feeds to the main monitor or perhaps a secondary monitor. Really cool concept though

    Has the right shaped roof to extend outwards, like a wing, say 10ft to give it extra lift and glide capabilities. Might make it more battery efficient? 2nd prototype!

    Just wondering, where(how) do you charge this thing, and how long does it take to charge it?

    • @Yachtbuyer
      @Yachtbuyer  Před 8 měsíci

      It will charge in 5-6 hours via a standard marina shorepower connection; faster with a super charger.
