  • HOW TO BUILD A BMW ENGINE M50 M52 TURBO 1 of 4 (BLOCK)
This engine build starts with a cast iron m50 block. We are installing 2.8 liter rotating assembly and trying to use all the best original BMW parts we can without going to aftermarket engine parts. We have sourced the strongest parts from multiple generations of engine to attempt to make something reliable and have the performance required to drift.Any performance engine work better once boosted, so we will be using a Garratt 3540 turbo. The ultimate power figure is approximately 450HPWe run through the specifics about building the engine, torque specifications for Rod and main caps, and most importantly, what NOT TO DO.

Note: If you want to build a budget turbo stroker motor using the M54B30 crank, and you're like me with an M50B25 non VANOS thinking "Oh, i'll just use the THICK BOY non VANOS rods with the 3 liter crank", then think again. You cannot run them as they hit the bottom of the bores with the longer stroke crank. It almost has a 1.5cm longer stroke. Ask me how i know...
I guess you could start cutting. It doesn't look like too much needs to be cut away. Definetly doable, i just got aftermarket rods instead. Didn't wanna deal with the headache.

Yeah I would assume it's from the longer stroke. No issue with the 2.8

@@drayescobar9469 If you have crank and pistons/rods out anyway you'd be stupid not to get new rings and gap them for the best results. If you're leaving the bottom end untouched then just send it. A lot of people do, but with varying degrees of success.

Another option for head sealing is o-ringing the block, then you can run a stock composite head gasket and it will hold to over 1k hp. Pretty handy if you're pulling the head regularly because the stock head gaskets are cheap.

Disadvantage is if something goes wrong with the tune up etc or detonation u will take the head out just use stock OEM gasket with arps it works great u rather have the head gasket go out then destroying the head the gasket is acting as a fuse basically the o ring system or fire ring system is basically making the head one with the block and it puts alot of stress on the center off the head when its clamped down this system is good for drag racing only but for a reliable build that can take punishment stock gasket is best on the bmw m50 and other models of bmw engines in my opinion

@@prienchutterpaul6638 it makes sense you always want to have a weak point somewhere. For me i rather my driveshaft break than my trans or diff going out it's easier to replace a driveshaft than a transmission that way you get the car going the same day within an hour of it breaking. In the engine id rather replace a gasket than the head so it makes sense to use OEM plus FCP euro will just give you a new one

I feel almost all engines from 92-2005 are pretty much the same, that's why all the parts are interchangeable. Main difference with the S50 is the head design is completely different.

    • @VasKatsaras

The M50NV Rods are 135mm same as the M52B28. The M50TU rods are 140mm. It took a while to measure everything up but it all works. Thank you for your question. Its something i should have addresses in the video.

Sorry I'm so late on asking this question. The Main cap bolts you said it's 12mm. So you need to change the size of the hole to 12mm on the block. What strength must thr bolt be must it be a 10.9 or 12.9?
