- New video of my DIY Worm Casting Separator (Sieve) in action! This is the 2nd time I've used this DIY Sieve for Worm Castings. A few weeks before I moved down to AL, I used this to filter castings out of this same worm bin. Also included images of using this to sift Rock/Sand for a wicking bed system I'm building.

Now, several weeks later...I'm bring you along and letting you see how the DIY Worm Casting Separator works. :) I also explain what I'd like to do differently, and what I'd improve on as I get more time.
Also, please let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can make this better.
God Bless,
Wayne

Looking good *****
Nice!!
My pleasure Robert Roman, thanks for the props! Hope to see you posting some awesome Sustainable Pics/Videos soon. :)
Wayne Nix Thanks so much brotha!
I appreciate it Willi Paul, much appreciated!
Thanks for sharing.
VERY cool design! Great job wayne! that thing worked soo well.
nice machine, very efficient
I tried to separate castings and worms, such a hassle, now what I do is empty the worm bins into the garden for 7 months and do a round-up in the fall.
I just bury a few melon rinds here and there marked with pin flags and they congregate
I think this happened with my worms in my worm bin the worms I had purchased escaped my bin because it got to hot so I put spent grains in my compost can and today when I tipped it I found a over abundance of capsules
I saw one trommel that had a brush running it's length on the down turning side to knock off debris stuck in the screen. They didn't say how fast it was wearing out or how often it needed to be adjusted closer to compensate for wear out. A rolling brush would probably work better for a while, but the bristles would eventually get bowed from colliding with the mesh strands. Putting cam lobes (curved ramps) on one or both buckets could be the activator for a wheel on a pivoting rod (like a see-saw) that could regularly jump and thump your device, but I'd keep a watch for failures around screws and bolts, like cracks.
Your separator look like it is working very well. Good to see it in action.
Looks good! I built something like that a couple of years ago for the compost. It's made that job SO much easier ... I love the crank!
Blessed be!
Yeah for sure JT Bear, they make quick work! ha Much love to you and your family. :D
Innovative! I like how fine the castings come out! Thanks for sharing Wayne!
Excellent design my friend!! Glad to see its working!! I have a super healthy group of worms in my garden and they plants loved it!!
This is an awesome design and I'll be sure to upgrade to it when I finally get the space to store something like that!
Nice one Wayne.. I found a ¼" worked better for us with the wetter castings we used to make..
Cheers mate..
Just going back and finding old comments that somehow I've missed RobBobs Backyard Farming, I'm sorry! :-/ Hopefully you're starting to recover after loosing those fish? Thank you so much for your support man. Is there anything I can do to help?
***** Is all good thanks mate..
Got some of the perch from the fish farm into the aquaponics system today to help take up the slack..
Cheers mate..
Great job!
6:08 They sell roller brushes of different lengths and sizes to keep your screen clean.
I find that using an 8 mesh screen in my sieves does not catch cocoons. Unfortunately I cannot find 10 mesh screen which is my preference for correctly damp castings. Not even in mining sieves. I’m in Alaska so I don’t have many places to find some here. i would love to make something that isn’t so hard on my 65-year-old hands and arms, but would like to use the smaller mesh.
Rather than a motor, just use the existing rotational motion of the drum to drive the tamping action. Maybe some kind of a cam profile that makes the cam shaft ride up onto & drop onto the screen..
simplest upgrade besides the vibrator to keep the screens clear I would make would be to move the drive to the same ends as the feed, so you are turning it where you are feeding from.
I love this idea. Thanks Wayne.
My pleasure farmer cal! Thank you for watching, and commenting! Please come back and let me know if you have any ideas that will make my projects even better! :)
That's a really cool casting separator.
Thank you metaltrooper62. I've been working on it for a long time....it's still evolving! :-P
metaltrooper62 very nice
very nice video Wayne, can i give a sugestion? before you separate the castings make sure to let dry out a bit. it is too wet to swift. Greetings from Portugal.
Joao Paulo Duarte - I couldn't agree with you more! :) Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts...it means a LOT to me. In the future, I'm not trying to juggle with time and schedules to find a dry day to film....makes it easy to have the bins at the proper moisture. :-D
It looks perfect man. Glad u shared it
Beautiful castings
simplystrick Thanks so much. I love poo! :-P
Like the idea idea of a casting separator, guessing you could use it to separate compost.
Gardening Tips With Phil - Thanks Phil, I appreciate that a lot. Yes, I've built it to be able to use it for sifting and screening anything small and lightweight. I can't remember if it was on a video or a Google Plus post where I show us using it on gravel. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I did not see a vid on how you built your DIY Worm Casting Separator
Cool idea. You're so creative
Good job son. Nice. I like it all.
idea use 1 pull tie for each hole or as close as the will go to each other around a rod just above screen they tap each hole as it spins . may have to find a way to hold them so they dont turn. Another idea a narrow bristle brush above. yep that'd do it.
what kind of motor did you use?
Interesting project I'm just thinking out loud here and wondering if you could also use it for sifting compost
Help!!
My worm bin seems to have been taken over by small roaches! Good thing this is not in or by the house. I do have drainage holes in bottom & on sides but I have not harvested my compost in about a year. Looks a little damp inside. Seems like the worms are nowhere to be found. Could the worms have jumped ship because the roaches moved in the bin, or did the roaches eat them? Or was it I may have waited too long to harvest & they didn't like the atmosphere of being a little damp? Funny, those bugs are still breaking down the food into soil, but I can't stand any roaches, yuk! I think I need to make a new worm bin with screen on the bottom so that their soil is not soggy. Help is much appreciated!!!
Great update!
Can you ring up an screw at the front to pull it in
How long can a double bin go before you need to drain it.
Pretty cool
Great video and demo. !!
How long has the bin working? When did you start the worm bin?
This thing is a monster.
Cool
why not just mount a weighted brush on the side to push the stuck castings off the fabric
Love it
You should put paddles made of wood in the middle so it brakes the dirt apart more and you get more castings
Your vibrator motor would help with a bigger shoot and keeping it flowing without getting stuck.
Before long your going need a much larger worm bin buddy!
Wayne, looks like a lot of thought going into you worm casting separator. I love your inventions and it looks like it works great!
Use a water hose to help wash casting .
I think that if you were to put the compost through a second time you might be surprised how much more you would get
Nice.
Thank YOU!
do you sell your separator plans?
+David Varnadoe - Just responded, sorry for the delay! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel....as I'm going to be doing some interesting things over the next year. :-D
You might want to have a look at this guy's sifter, how he has a rotating hand grip and where he placed his handle and input chute. Both the rotating hand grip and having the input chute on the same side might make yours even easier to use. You won't need a complicated hopper nor will you need to go back and forth between both ends to load and turn. czcams.com/video/1n5BZKZBKJE/video.html . I also don't think you need the bucket lid, as the wheels and the bucket rims will not let the sifter part move past either pair of wheels. The opposite end wheels and rim should deter any up/down movement, right? I like how you used the bottom of the buckets to hold your axle - smart move. Have you solved your accumulation problem? I'd be interested to see how you did that. Have you thought of a simple cog on the bucket side that would activate a wood hammer on the side of the wire mesh each revolution for a tap? Thanks for sharing!
For vibration mount a palm sander to it
Do you killed the worms?
mic check one two one two mic check.
just like a trommel
did you think about the trauma you cause those poor worms?
