Hmm interesting, I feel like it will get a lot of attention due to the cast

It certainly might. But sadly it’s sandwiched between 2 really buzzy horror films in A Quiet Place: Day One and Longlegs. So I’m worried it’ll have a hard time sticking out in the packed crowd

    SPOILER-FILLED OPINION
I loved X, I deeply connected with Pearl and I felt extremely disappointed with MaXXXine.
The twist villain in MaXXXine to me, was shocking on first view yet really stupid in retrospect because it betrays the subtle nuance you find in X.
Maxine is a atypical final girl, not because she has sex or does drugs, because in the final moment in X, when she drives away as a sole survivor she says "Divine intervention. Praise the fucking Lord"
To me, that was the movie saying "no one can make you decide what to believe but you, religion can be used to fuel people's hatred yet religion itself is not hateful. You can take the good tools and values learn from it and move on"
Well, MaXXXine pretty much says "actually nvm, the world is black and white and there's no in between"
How do they do that? Well by making Maxine's father, not only make an appearance in the the film, but also make him a fucking muderder cult leader!
Which to me is the most easy and boring decision that could be made if you have seen X. Because why? Because is Satanic Panic in the 80s? And to say Religion is full of hypocrites?
We have seen this before!!! is not new or exciting!!!
What I really wish MaXXXine had been is, Ti West has stated that his inspiration of X was capture what media and technology does to people, X was all about the dawn of VHS and the limitless possibilities to become rich and famous, even if it leads to exploitation.
Pearl was to show that this sentiment has existed ever since the conception of film itself.
To me, what could had been MaXXXine great is to focus on how that the exploitation of people has become institutional. That people's impulse to "do whatever it takes" to be a star can be turned against them.
Basically going from the Slasher inspiration seen in X followed by Torture Porn, movies like Saw, 8mm and Hostel being examples of the genre. (I don't know why there's 3 Xs on the title other than maybe Ti West thought it was cool!)
This could been such nuance exploration in the evolution of media and desensitization to violence.
but instead we got a B movie level story, with a uninteresting message that also betrays what we saw in the last movie (if you want it the franchise as a whole) and a pathetic villain!
Im really sad! Yet we still have X, a movie that I think is still special on its own.

I agree with everything here. I think Maxxxine is a fine movie on its own but as the finale to Pearl and X it felt really disingenuous. I love your body horror idea though. I think that could’ve been a really interesting as long as the film itself didn’t become overly exploitative.

Evangelical bashing is just so old it’s a trope though

Yeah you’re right, it is. The longer I’ve had since seeing this movie, the less I’ve liked the way it ended. It’d be one thing if the evangelical bashing was nuanced and done differently than the trope, but all it does is play into exactly what you’d expect which was so odd for such a trope-reversing franchise

I never noticed this before but you’re totally right, thanks for calling me out. I’ll definitely work on trying to sound a bit more mellowed out cause it’s probably a bit off putting at the moment 😭

I hate to say that that’s a good choice but I think it is. MaXXXine is definitely still worth a watch but if you’re picking between it and Longlegs then I’d pick Longlegs for sure (even though I haven’t seen it yet)
