This was a VERY difficult movie for Danny, as he was temporarily separated from his wife, Sylvia Fine, during the production. He was on and off his psychiatrist's couch for most of the filming, that's how screwed up he was. One reason behind the separation was because Sylvia was unable to convince producer Sam Goldwyn to use new comedy material for Danny....because the cheap bastard wouldn't meet her price. So, unlike his previous films, no "funny routines" for Danny.....who stood in for Gary Cooper, as Virginia was supposed to be Barbara Stanwyck. Goldwyn wanted this to be a straight musical remake of "Ball of Fire" (1941) [starring Gary and Barbara]. He showed the original film to Virginia over and over until she learned Barbara's part "by rote". He even got Howard Hawks, the original director, to direct this version. Not only did Hawks NEVER see the finished film, he vowed never to work for Goldwyn again {he didn't}. Then there was a matter of the "jam sessions" featuring Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, et. al. Goldwyn told Hawks to be sure "not to have the black and white musicians play too close to each other", as he didn't want to jeopardize the film's bookings in the South. Despite ALL THIS, the film was most enjoyable.......

Virginia Mayo, according to the Sultan of Morocco at the time, was "tangible proof for the existence of God".

Elliot Griffin, the creator of mayonnaise originally created it as a medicine meant to cure sore throats. His pharmacy which consisted mainly of "mayo" having products,as the term began to catch on,went on to accommodate more and more medicine as it was a place where people who couldn't afford patents tested their formulae. One day there was an outbreak of an unknown bacterial infection at the time which we now know as strep throat and as a sign of good faith,Elliot opened the shed in the back of the pharmacy to the public where they could take free doses of every medicine in stock along with recommendations from various professionals who stuck around to observe the effects. More and more people began to show up until a full blown medical practice was born, and this practice grew to become the mayo clinic
