Control Suggestion - No Toggle! 3 Volumes with Push/Pull knobs as on/off for each P90 and a Master Tone!
I said the same thing, except a separate tone control for the neck and bridge pick ups ;)
5 pots just seems a nicer number it terms of laying them out in the luscious curve of the sg's bottom... Oo-er ;)
@@duzmano8161 To be honest I'd prefer 6 knobs the 3 Volumes being Push/Pull for on and off and the 3 Tones being Push/Pull for No Load! But I thought people would never go for it! 😂
is there the depth of wood for them?
@@kathrynwhitby9799 Yes Gibson uses them in the SG Modern! They're not the PCB ones! (Before you ask! 😂)
Front rout like a tele or SG200. It leaves the back beautiful with nothing but the grain and finish to admire. Though my SG200 has a trem cavity and is quite a bit thicker and almost no break angle. Is very strait like a Fender and is 40mm thick. Powered by one Seymor Duncan at the bridge. EVH wiring with one volume.
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. So for the pickup selector, use the full 7-way strat style cover switch, giving the artist max versatility of every possible combo.
This is the way!
This is the way!
This is the way.
This is the way?
Live long and prosper.
Up, up and awaaaaaaaaaay.
Great job Ben, this is going to be a beautiful guitar.. really looking forward to the build.. Was hoping to visit in April when I was in England but got covid on my holiday and it was a wash out! Going to try and get over again in September..
Love the care you are taking with the lay out, looking forward to following the build, cheers Ben 🍻
So looking forward to seeing this guitar finished. It’s fascinating watching it evolve.
Good on ya Ben,not sure if I was first to mention the SG idea it looked like I was, either way I’m super stoked to see this build take shape …
You’ve made an excellent choice…
Kia Ora from Aotearoa guys
Ur the first I saw if that counts lol
Really looking forward to this build Ben.
Might I be so bold as to say it's about time for another bass build? A headless multiscale 4 string, using inspiration from a Dingwall and a Kubicki?
Would be rather splendid 😊
A headless multiscale bass? I’m buying tickets for that raffle!
mmm- multiscale kubicki.. yes please!
For the wiring, I have a Mexican deluxe players strat with a standard 5 way- but it has a button to activate the bridge pickup. So, neck pickup + button = tele and neck/middle + button = all 3
Came for the Kauri, patiently, and caught up by this SG. Inspiring. Thank you.
cool transform. you rock Ben! I love these 3way 6x toggles - lot of options
My first kit build was an SG. I too moved the output jack off the front and to the side. Wiring came out fine, finishing ... lessons were learned.
If I were in charge of the control scheme, I would go with either:
1: toggles for pickups, master volume, master tone, master bass cut (ie PTB circuit)
2: individual volumes on the INLINE knobs, master tone off to the side, five way switch. Maybe a bypass toggle for ALL PICKUPS, FULL SPEED AHEAD.
Really looking forward to seeing how this one turns out, its gonna be one hell of a cool guitar
Really enjoyed this. I love the inlayed top idea, brilliant!
I love the line on the dots!
A Les Paul - thickness, carved-top SG had always been my dream build ❤👌
Ben, put the 3 volumes along the top row with the selector(s) & tone on the bottom row.
(plan b) Maybe, bunch up the volume pots slightly, to make room for 3 standard on/off toggle switches in the extended control cavity.
Love the concept of this guitar.
I personally think One P90 and a single vol knob would have been fine, but I have used a freeway switch and it is pretty cool. There’s a couple of different types now. Also you will want to have an out of phase option, trust me.
Ben to cut your on the fret board Usr the laser cutter to make those lines .
Laser cutter part 2 ,for the control cavity cover plate cut the .
use the laser cutter to cut the control cavity with the laser and use the offcut for the cover plate.
I like the tie fighter inlays with the bits at the end.
Something you might want to try, or that I'd like to see done anyway, is to make the 24th fret like the Jet Earlwood and Caldera models. Instead of having a 24th fret, they would screw a (brass?) plate on the edge of the fingerboard through the pickup cavity that was acting as a fret. There was therefore no fretboard after the last "fret" and there was no pickup ring. That way, the neck pickup was closer to a 22 fret position but the guitar had 24 frets.
Cheers!
The Gibson SG looks gorgeous and I would love to own it but I'm absolutely certain your interpretation is going to be out of this world, those inlays are an inspired choice . Great to see you are going to take away the jack from the front, my only problem the the SG design in my humble opinion.
Love the idea of using a freeway switch in this build.
Use a 5 way rotary switch, so then you can have neck. Neck middle hum cancelling, Middle, middle bridge, Bridge.
Or get a 6 and have an option for all pickups as well.
Use 3 way switch to pick 1 2 or 3 pickups on together then push pull pots to turn off that particular pickup that way you have all combinations
hahaha, yes! This is my fault, I was the first dork to suggest an SG and lay out some good reasons for it in the last video. I’m so happy!
ZZ top for the win. Do check out the carve on the top of Billy’s SG. Plenty of scope to show off that wood.
I like the Tie Fighter inlay idea!! Go with that!
Thanks for sharing.
Many thoughts, few answers. An end pin jack comes to mind, as does push pull switch headaches. Sometimes cleaning up can complicate.
I would omit the selector switch altogether and have the volume knobs be push pull (on/off). Much cleaner and easier to manipulate than mini toggles IMO. Keep the 3 volumes in a row the way you have it laid out and erase one of the bottom circles instead of the one for the selector.... Or have the 3 volumes and wire in 2 tones for the neck and middle like a strat if you're feeling feisty.
For the inlays I think it would be cool to do something that sort of mirrors the curvature of the horns on the guitar as opposed to a straight line... but you are on a time constraint so that might be too much carving.
For the output jack you can use a strat style one on the back of the guitar.
I like the neck inlay idea 😊
I've been working on my own redesign of an SG shape. Very interested to see how this inflated top turns out!
Really dig the idea of having an inlay on the top which allows the bevel of the sides to look nice and even. I think the ability to turn each pickup on or off would add a whole lot of versatility to this SG. Just do it!
my plan for doing a 3 pickup, as mentioned 3 individual volumes, 1 master tone, but two switches, switch 1 would be your normal N-N&B-B selection, and then switch 2 would be Sw1-Sw1&M-M. so switch 2 would let you just select the middle pickup only, or add the middle to how ever your switch 1 is set, so you get the strat 2 & 4, but also can have all three on, or it just removes the middle pickup completely, was thinking of doing switch 2 with a mini toggle, but since scratch build you could use two normal switches, and place them.
Yes do a three way toggle with one volume and one tone! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I like the idea of the free way because it reminds me of a gear shifter. :)
You measured the depth on a 67 style large guard SG, and I believe the 61 style originals with the small guards are actually a little bit thicker bodies.
With 3 pups, I would do a rotary 5-way and have bridge/bridge-middle/all three/bridge-neck/neck.
Plus, the aesthetic of a rotary will look better than a blade switch.
Three way toggle with Jimmy page wiring adjusted to three 3 p90s. Where the centre p90 acts as the second part of the humbucker. You would need a push pull pots and some weirdo wiring. Or drop the p90s and opt for 2 P-Rails wired Jimmy page with push pull pots
SGs are my favourite body sculpt on electrics, the original early '60s ('62-'64) shapes are beautiful and indispensable to follow for the concept to manifest. Such a shame Gibson reserves this for custom shop models (well at least a lot closer replica than their large production ones, which seem deliberately ignoring the logic of the beveling, especially the horns).
I want this guitar! Just purchased some fret dressing tools from the WONDERFUL Crimson Guitars. I hope it was enough to be in the drawing... 🙏
it's really interesting watching the design evolve... i think it would be cool aesthetically to use some of the left over flame wood from the body cap and incorporate it into the neck inlay, like a block inlay or something at the 12th fret... could be a cool way to bring it together...
For the lines on the inlay, you should put something that is crimson in color
Love the inlay lines. You could use old strings as inlays
love the P90 👍. I wouldn’t go to crazy over the switching. Maybe 3-way and one pull-push for adding the neck-pu constantly?
Would be cool to see a full height metal scratch plate that looks like an iron devil mask (chin by the strap button, bridge as a beardy thing, pickup as mouth...sort of thing)
A Jaguar style pickup selector plate would look so cool on an SG!
Interested to see what you do with the neck joint. On the Gibson SG they route away half the neck joint away for the neck pickup.
On my current build im setting the neck 1 fret deeper and i think im going to use a p90 as its thinner and ill need to route less material out.
So Ben, Gibson already figured this out. Look at SG Supremes and Elegants. You use equal thickness top and back woods. It allows the any figuring in the top wood to show on all of the front bevels.
Liking everything about the build so far, but still not sure about the back plate design yet. I think it needs to conform more to the guitar shape, not so much with straight lines.
Sg shape with the Les Paul thickness are cool too Ben
Just make it a 3 way switch and the 2 front knobs for volume of bridge and neck conected to the 3 way, so, LP std like and add the midle PU to the output of the 3 way, so you can bring it in in any other configuration alowing up to 3 pu's at the same time :)
Have you considered using black locust wood as it's supposed to fluoresce under uv light? Inlays or top? I think grain angle is important.
I still vote for the Crotch cut walnut!! The redwood will do! I'm sure this will be an awesome guitar as all of yours are. Thank you for everything you've done for me brother! This is the way! I absolutely love the idea of the non symmetrical carves shown on the templates. Really awesome Ben!✌️🤍
3 way switch at the top is easiest for access in my opinion. like a LP or check out the Ibanez Artist double cutaways. My AR150 MS for example. (Marine burst). :-D
Still think carving your head tattoo into the 12th would be cool. Looking forward to this build.
Make the control cover a feature? Star shaped? Sugar skull? Devil head - riffing off the SG's 'horns'?
Wow!
I couldn’t believe it, when I just started to watch this piece! The VERY guitar I would love to build too!
I LOVE the idea of inlaying the top wood (Daniel Van Veet, Unquendor Guitars [and ex-student of yours!!] does inlaid tops on some of his guitars!)
I hate the front mounted jack as well! I also dislike the ‘bat-wing’ pick-guard intensely, though if you are inlaying the top, do you actually need one at all??
I have always found the stop-tail and tun-o-matic rather cumbersome looking and it also necessitates putting in a big neck angle, in relation to the thin body (I feel like it is going behind my back….!!!!)
I always wondered, could you use a combined bridge/tailpiece, like a Tele or something like the Hipshot bridge…? This would make for a ‘straighter’ guitar, but would it alter playability or tone….(?)
I would love to hear what you think!
SOOOOOO looking forward to this build!
WONDERFUL STUFF! (As ever..!) 🥰🥰🍷🍷🎸🎸
"Do you know how hard this is when you guys are right here?" Yes, Ben, and we appreciate that you take those things into consideration. I watched a video yesterday where I saw more of the luthier's bald spot than I did the guitar building. I appreciate that how you film is important to you.
Oh, and great work on the SG.
The smaller radius on the control cover corners looks more "Gibson". The fretboard inlays looks like a cool idea. 3 on/offs and 2 phase switches will get you all the voicings from 3 p90s. Add a master volume and tone and you're done.
Gibsom did make a SG that is basicly a carved top. Its was named zoot suit.
I love all the ideas except the inlay. Simple shape with all the spare timber would be my idea, depending on the finish
Few vids back you talked about how it's a shame they don't make guitars like they use to with all the funky knobs and switches..
Like the old Teisco's... Should do that next...
I think it would be stunning to have the curve of the control cavity parallel to the body curve at the same point
I would go with 4 pot control wiring, but... But with 2 vol (one for neck and one for bridge) 1 tone and a blend pot for middle pickup. Marrying it with standard 3 way toggle you have classic voicings of bridge, neck and between plus you can blend sexy middle taste by your ow taste.
I get the feeling this will be a really good build - I'm surprised you haven't done an SG build yet.
It would be awesome if you did something unusual with the wiring; coil taps or maybe 3 pups instead of 2, or Graph-Tech Ghost acoustic saddles. It would be interesting to see how sonically flexible an SG could be made - they aren't exactly known for being terribly flexible instruments.
Regarding control placement. You now have 3-and-2, but are still aligning with a 90* pattern. Why not shift, make them a pyramid shape on a 45*, and have all three on the row be volume? This also gives you a lot more options for the shape of the cover. The cover could just be a removeable section of your inlaid top, for instance.
SG Junior is one of my favorite guitars. Or a Les Paul Junior DC!
If the body's Gibson inspired, make the controls Fender inspired. 5-way blade, Vol-Tone-Tone. Maybe even throw a Charvel/Jackson style, back mounted output jack. Lol
If I'd known the previous question "what should I build out of this neck, this body and this top" could include not using that neck, or that body ... I might've answered differently 😂
But we are where we are 😜
Backplate. The SG is all curves. How about a teardrop backplate like your recent Descendants? Curves instead of straight lines.
How about make it like an ES-5 switchmaster? A 4 position switch that's each individual pickup in the first 3 positions and then all 3 of them in the 4th. 3 volumes and 1 tone like an ES-5 mastertone.
Hey Ben
Texas Toast know a Guy that makes the ultimate SG Template with the ability to get the scallops at the correct angle and it’s just super cool, just a thought I know you’re very capable of making ya own
I do like the elongated back plate.
Pickguard (made out of wood) inlaid into the inlaid top for some inlayception. OR: control plate (kinda like a 70s SG deluxe) inlaid into the inlaid top?
My gordon smith custom has pots which turn on and off the pick up by pulling them in and out, why not go for something like that so you can choose any combination of pick ups then a tone control for neck and a tone control for bridge? Negating the need for switches and keeping it nice and clean?
How about a rotary switch for a pickup selector? Maybe with just a single volume and tone.
Will be a great series for sure, would rather a LP of course. But it would be even better to do a build inspired by Jerry Garcia's Tiger guitar. One of the most beautiful and unusual guitars of all time.
21:41
What's better:
3 volumes and a tone control...
Or as Beck would have us believe...
2 turntables and a microphone.
Where it's at?
I like the way this is going. The inlaid top is definitely the way to go, as are the afterthought fingerboard lines.
If there's going to be a scratchplate (possibly just clear acrylic?), please don't use the double-sided batwing type as on the black SG, the smaller original type is much nicer!
Three mini toggle on-off switches for each pickup would make sense.
The tenon appears to be glued onto the neck. From the perspective of the neck how is it any different than glueing straight to the guitar body, it's still 3 foreign walls of wood and the surface area is limited to the same amount of neck? Is there a reason other than joint strength for that design? Video(s) discussing the different designs of set neck pockets would be super helpful
You should be making he SG body with that special reserve wood! That would be worth watching!
perhaps the same type of wood that you want to use for the top you could use for the neck inlays
You should shape the point of the back plate like the horns.
After watching prs assembling their guitars I no longer worry about small neck pockets!
Ps the wood with the flaws is more interesting imo
Pps I would've said build the Les Paul lol
Ppps sticking the strap button on the horn cures the neck dive apparently
Unquendor Guitars has some cool inlayed top guitars. Did some GGBO builds as well i think....
You should make the inlays smaler so they look like actual Tie Fighters with 2 at the 12th Fret!
Yes, yes and thrice YES to 3xP90s 👍🏻
Add the Freeway switch, just because it makes you uncomfortable. And it freaks people out the first time they switch with it and they think they have broken something.
6 position rotary switch... Neck, neck+mid, mid, mid+bridge, bridge, all...
Hi Ben how about in and out of faze switch for each pickup as well as a toggle switch
Are you going for a 61 style guard or a later Batwing style guard? Please go for the smaller guard.
Where the backplate meets the bottom of the body, dosn’t look right with a straight line meeting the body curve, could you blend the cover plate into the body with a curve.
You really need to do a non offset top and show us how good you are! If anyone can it’s you!
Why not use a 5 way switch, 3 volume in a row with tone and switch below
