Yes, Metallica tackles a lot of topics. Drug abuse, alcoholism, child abuse, corruption in the legal system, the horrors of war, suicide, mistreatment is psychiatric homes, nuclear war, artificial intelligence taking over, etc.
Along the way, the singer/rhythm guitarist (James Hetfield) started writing more introspective songs that dealt with his own feelings and problems. He had a rough childhood and that trampled over into him abusing alcohol. The more he wrote about his feelings of isolation and his disconnect with his parents, the closer to sobriety he got and the songs became less reliant on sounding fast and heavy. He puts a lot of emotion into his lyrics and his guitar playing. They started off as the band that was the most aggressive with their instruments and technical ability, but they’ve mellowed over time and began writing songs from the heart with gentler, more polished sounds. Today, these guys are in their mid to late 50s, but can play their old, heavy classics just as fast as they did in their early 20s. They’re also a band that doesn’t forget about their fans.
I grew up listening to them, but I was also a fan of rap as well. I preferred Tupac Shakur and The Wu-Tang Clan. Tupac had songs that were socially conscience and fans of his songs often like Metallica’s song. The two genres actually rub shoulders quite well and heavy metal and rap groups used to collaborate a lot in the 80s and 90s. Rapper/Actor Ice-T had a heavy metal band called “Body Count” that was friends with many of the heavy metal bands of the early 90s.
My best friend died of a drug overdose almost 6 months ago. Unfortunately, it was one of those things that anyone could see coming. Although it was pharmaceutical drugs and not cocaine, the drug DID play him like a puppet and he was a slave to it. No matter your age, health, background, race, religion, finances, etc., drugs can get the better of you and make you a slave to substances. No drug is worth dying over. Drugs leave nothing but death and destruction in their wake.
Good health and prosperity to everyone!

That's exactly what they're talking about:
It's basically the group is singing this from the perspective of the different types of drugs saying that the drugs are the puppet master and the person was the puppet
It's talking about at least 2 different types of drugs Cocaine and Heroin
Btw: that "intermission" as Half called it, in the beginning part, it's supposed to represent the euphoria of getting high and the ending part is representing coming down from the high

  • @GorehamM20
    @GorehamM20 Před 4 lety +6

I had someone very dear to me loose their life to drugs and damage from addiction abuse, sad as it is to say...
My father passed away when I was two years old, and my uncle (brother to my mother) was very much my father figure in my life growing up. I never knew as a child, but as an adult when my mother finally told me the truth after he died, that every time when I was a kid and he disappeared into the bathroom to take his "medicine", he was actually taking a drug. The saddest part is, is that he knew what it was doing to him and he knew he needed help, and he did try and get help, but it didn't work, especially since doctors who tried to help him at the time put him onto a substitute that was supposed to help ease him off of it, but it turned out to be worse later on than the actual drug itself. He did eventually clean his life up, even got married and had some good years of living in his life, but sadly the damage done internally was something that couldn't be undone.
He passed away from organ failure at the age of forty eight. Doctors tried their best, but the damage, like I said, was just too great. I know it's easy to label a drug user as scum of life, but my uncle was a good man. Loved by anyone and everyone who met him for his kind heart and warm personality. The day he passed was the heaviest day of my life and not a day goes by that I don't miss him, especially since as the years go by a slowly start to forget a little bit more about him, like how he would smile and how his voice sounded. But I will always remember the important parts of him being in my life.
My final bit of advice to anyone who reads this that may know someone or has known someone who is addicted to drugs of any kind... Don't think for a moment its because they love drugs. Believe me when I say they likely hate the drugs and what they do to them, but addiction is addiction. It's not them who loves the drugs... the drugs love them.
If you read my story, then thank you. I hope you got to take something away from it.

I have been down the rabbit hole, that middle part when the song slows down for me represents the time when u are stuck but u don´t realize it, time flies by so fast even though at the time it feels like time goes so very slowly, but when u get out of it(which is hell of a lot harder than anyone that has not been through it would think) u will notice that all of the years just kind of disappeared and for absolutely nothing
not even the fun times were actually as fun as they seemed at that time since the master made u think it was fun
sure, crazy and fun things happened and I´ve lived for sure, but in a haze

One of the main things I've always loved about Metallica is they don't just sing and play music. Every part of their music tells a deep story. Master of puppets is hands down my favorite song. The lyrics tell a tale of drug addiction and how you are a slave to it while it slowly kills you. The instruments portray the life of the addict. Starting heavy to represent the need for the fix, the breakdown in the middle soft and melodical representing getting your fix and being calm, then heavy ending representing the coming down from the high needing more. Its all so beautiful!!!

James (singer, chief songwriter and lyricist) is a great lyricist, and his best IMO is Bleeding Me. All about his personal demons, struggles, and addictions (same thing with "Fixxxer", and "The Outlaw Torn"). The meaning is not as obvious as this track, or any of their earlier stuff, but that's what makes it even better.
