The time I was stopped by the Police for cycling legally on the road.

  • I should have noticed straight away that these Police Officers decided to block me. Ordinarily we'd have travelled through the entire junction at 20mph+, but they obviously from the beginning thought it would be a good idea to 'teach me a lesson'.
The reason I don't always use the cycle track here is it's faster to use the road. Taking the cycle track has more light sequences, including a double red to allow pedestrians to cross.

Although NOT COMPULSORY you should use the lanes whenever practical as they can make your journey safer. If you need to leave the cycle lane, always check that it is safe to do so and signal to other road users.”
If you look at the cycle lane, it was pretty packed with other cyclists, and the cyclist taking this video was faster than them, therefore he was using the road because otherwise he’d have to slow down. A pretty reasonable reason to be on the road. It’s only when the police deliberately block him does he become an issue because it’s a busy road and overtaking a car would be silly, so he slowed down.
You’ll note there were 2/3 other cyclists who later in the video passed, all of whom were on the road like this guy, all going considerably faster than the cyclists in the cycle lane. Yet the police didn’t stop them? The police created the issue here not the cyclist.
Also note the road markings....the cycle lane ends less than 20 yards after the junction....at which point every cyclist in the cycle lane merges into the bus lane/road because the cycle lanes round London randomly stop and start and are not one continuous route.

I think it's pretty obvious the cyclist pulled into the road to get past the slower riders in the bollard area, something he could have achieved if he wasn't 'brake checked' several times by the police.
Once clear of the bollards, the cyclist cannot re-enter the cycle lane due to other cyclists passing on his left. By the time these bikes have passed, he may as well stay in the road to get through the green lights, something he would have achieved if not once again 'brake checked' by the police.

However, it's the same individual that would complain that nothing is being done for cycle safety.

This is to prevent accidents between left turning cars and cyclists going straight on. In this case it’s perfectly reasonable for a cyclist to be with the rest of the traffic so they can continue straight unhindered. Stopping and starting uses orders of magnitude more energy so it’s undesirable to have to stop let alone wait.

There will also be cyclist who see their cycling as fitness training activity whose actual speed and ability is at odds with those who are commuting on a bike in cycle lanes, their speed being greater than those cyclist and shock and horror the cars on London streets!
There is not one car that can compete with an fit competent cyclist on a bike in London's peak travel periods.
Car drivers who are just humans in a car should come to know this and accept that their cars are an anachronistic mode of transport compared to many bikes on a road in London.
E bikes are going to compound this issue
If you should find this to much to bear there is a bike shop near you ready and waiting to relieve you of some cash and stress.

I don't see why cyclists shouldn't be banned altogether. Cars, truck and buses will never co exist without problems, and with growing popularity of e vehicles i cant see the problem being solved anytime soon.

......Will never exist with cyclist....me error. As for banning vehicles from city centres.....I actually don't see that on the near horizon, do you. So, in the meantime what we have is an unregulated group of road users displaying a cavalier attitude for the very people they're sharing the road with. Cyclists would do well to remember, if they're involved in an accident with a motor vehicle, chances are, its they who will come off worst.....its an undeniable fact. The two modes of transport are incompatible....sad, but true.

Cycle lanes are there for your safety..use them when they are there instead of getting all high and mighty..The Police have plenty to do without time wasters kicking about.

So why aren't you calling the met out for wasting time? They missed the lights because of this exchange and we both know there is plenty they should be doing in London
