  • In the episode, we talk about many things related to New Testament theology including the meaning of the term “gospel,” understanding Paul’s letters in their historical and biblical context, the importance of resurrection (over the significance of “going to heaven when you die”), the meaning of “hell,” and other personal things about his spiritual and theological journey. We also talk about the polarization in American Christianity and other contemporary issues.
Tom Wright is Research Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Early Christianity at St Mary’s College in the University of St Andrews and Senior Research Fellow at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Prior to serving at Oxford, Tom has held a variety of both academic and chaplaincy posts at Oxford, Cambridge, and McGill University, Montreal. He was Canon of Westminster in 2000, before serving as Bishop of Durham between 2003-2010. He’s the author of over 10 million books, or something like that.

This is badass. My progression: John Piper taught me to love and trust God and his word, Tim Keller introduced me to defending the faith, NT Wright taught me to look at history and the biblical OT + NT gospel narrative as a whole, Michael Heiser taught me how to better understand that cosmic narrative that drives everything. We are so blessed with great teaching.

Yes ,but for me it's not what pipier ,keller, wright, heiser and others "HAVE TAUGHT ME", but what they :ARE TEACHING ME " AND MANY OF MY TEACHERS HAVE NEVER WRITTEN A BOOK OR GIVEN A LECTURE. so I thank GOD for all of them. 10 Q holy spirit for teaching us all..

Wow…what a thought provoking conversation. I heard from a conservative evangelical that NT Wright had serious issues in his theology, so I steered clear. Years later, my life perpetually found conservative evangelicalism wanting and theologically deficient. This conversation hit so many topics that I’ve started to re-analyze. Thank you so much for the interview! I’ll definitely be chewing on this for a while. And I’ve got 6 of his books in my cart🤣

Well its all interesting mythology for sure, but most mythologies seem pretty convincing to those immersed in the mythology.

Whenever someone tells me to avoid a certain person theologically, it makes me want to look into them more. I’m not a big fan of taking someone else’s opinion as gospel.

Hi, Preston...thanks for this! So glad that N.T. Wright is promoting his new book...everyone on CZcams is interviewing him, and I get to hear his latest insights on so many great questions! If Dr. Wright is a "rock star theologian" (as he has been described), I guess that makes me a groupie. Had to write this down: "The crucified Jesus has been raised from the dead, launching the New Creation of which He is the Lord."

I tried to teach my youth about the resurrection. They knew nothing about it. Someone went home and told their parents I was teaching reincarnation! I got fired. Of course I am just a layman. But in defense in this evangelical American church I have never heard it preached from the pulpit or studied in a Bible study. It is all about going to heaven. Tom , I wish you could have crowd funded Bible study classes, so they would be open to all, rich and poor. People can’t afford seminary, or expensive books. I go to the university of you tube. It is very hard to discern truth and half truths, when you are alone. My church Bible studies tend to be too narrow and spoon fed.

Have you ever seen the movie "The Shawshank Redemption"? I like to think of the storyline of Brooks Hatlen, portrayed by James Whitmore. He serves his penal sentence and is released after 50 years, he has his redemption. But then his life begins, and it is empty, he can't find a life for himself after that, and he hangs himself.
The Gospel is not just a parole board substituting atonement for you so you can be released from prison, it contains within it justification by faith, but it is FAR more than that: the Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Messiah that was promised, he has redeemed the people of God and brought about the fulfillment of God's covenant with man which we are to now live in light of.

It has been an enriching experience to have been able to listen and engage with the ideas in this conversation. I had been wondering what Dr. Wright may have said about some of the issues in the U.S. (culture wars, right and left divide, evangelical tendency to avoid thoughtfully integrating politics and theology, etc.). Though there is so much to grieve in America and the world, there is also much to celebrate because of the message that the crucified and risen Prince of peace is Lord, and God's work of making a new heaven and new earth through him!! Thank you for the refreshing reminder.

Right about 12:25 "The crucified Jesus has been raised from the dead, launching God's new creation of which he is the Lord. The cross has dealt with all the things that clog our wheels, and stop us from being genuine human beings. The resurrection, then, launches God's new creation. Jesus is now exalted as Lord of the whole world. He is recruiting human beings to become genuine human beings at last by accepting what he did on the cross as the defeat of the power of evil, on their behalf, and becoming part of his new creation by his Spirit." Marvelous!

Was Paul given the authority like the 11 disciples of Jesus if you compare Mathew 28:20 and Acts 26:18?. For example Paul was not given the authority to give baptism. His authority was limited to preaching and deliver the sheeps of Jesus from the power of Satan.

( Do Christians And Jews and "OTHER" non-Muslims go to Heaven? )
    Quran 2:62
'' Those who believe (in the Quran) and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures) and the Christians and the Sabians->ANYAllah< Is The Protector Of Monasteries, Churches, Synagogues And The Mosques )
    Quran 22:40
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, " Our Lord is God " And were it not that God checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of God is much mentioned. And God will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, God is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
Note: Why did Allah protected Churches and Synagogues if they worship false Allah ?
( Why Are There So Many Different Religions In The World ? )
    Quran 5 48
''...... If God wanted He could have made all of you a single nation.( ie single religion ) But He willed otherwise in order to test you in what He has given you (ie Scriptures) therefore try to excel one another in good deeds. Ultimately you all shall return to God then He will show you the truth of those matters in which you '' >DISPUTE verb < not noun like other religions
    Islam mean "submission" to God
( The above verse saying is that God will not accept a religion from the >MUSLIM< and the Non-Muslims but total "submission" to God )
Question: How Can Muslim And the Non-Muslim "submit" to the God?
Answer: Be kind to other human beings and Do not lie, Do not steal, Do not cheat, Do not hurt others, Do not be prideful and Do the charity work.
Note: If you obeyed all the ABOVE Allah-God's moral laws "YOU" submitted to God.( ie Islam mean "submission" to God )

    Quran 5:5
''This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers (ie Muslim ) and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless and he in the Hereafter will be among the losers.''
Note: > Only < Islam allows interfaith marriages (>14 hundredsSame God< but They are >ALL Corrupt< more or less, some more than others from their original foundational teaching. The older religion are MORE corrupted than newer religion.
    Question to Muslim and Christian:
Does God / Allah only answer your pray ?
And God / Allah does not answer non Muslim / non Christian pray?
Did Allah '' Canceled '' all other religions Judaism and Christianity?
    Quran 5:48
'' And We have revealed to you [O Muhammad] the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture ( ie New and old Testament ) and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. >>>TO EACH OF YOU WE PRESCRIBED A LAW AND A METHODone nation>differ qualified < for to enter Paradise )

Oh contraire. I see Trump as a blatant wolf in wolf clothing. Genuine Christian’s vote what they see, but I’m thinking, who can see and know the heart of any man?
“The heart is deceitful , above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it?”
Does anybody know who God would vote for? We can only make our best guess. Probably would throw them out of the running, because there is so much corruption. Political leaders portray one thing and are another. They are human, fallible and often have their (own) agenda…especially if they happen to be running for president.

  • @Mimijat

I was disappointed to hear his remarks concerning Mr. Trump's supporters. We may not like his temperament, his delivery, his rudeness, whatever; BUT he does promise to protect Christians' freedom, our National Security, our Borders, our Energy independence, etc... He would be the President not our example of politeness. His past record encourages his voters again. Without that 1st election, the Country would not know the depth of Washington's corruption.
