Same here. I’ve been a huge fan of breaking Benjamin since their first album then when the band broke up and Ben got sick it was such a bummer for me. So when he was able to get through the law suit and put a band together and start going on tour again was like a dream come true for me. I’ve now seen them 3 times and he did not disappoint. So incredible live. You get a grateful Ben taking big risks to bring the original sound back. If you get a chance don’t miss out on a live performance

The thing I love about Breaking Benjamin is their continual adding of melodic lines in their previous sections. You can really hear this in their song I Will Not Bow. The first chorus is straight, but then they add in the later choruses these guitar harmonics over the top. These simple additions breathe new life into the base progressions and give you more of hook to hang onto.

Totally with you on preferring the melodic sensibility of a song over the technical playing prowess. There are so many amazing talents in music, but at the end of the day, I just want music to make me "feel" a particular way, which is a skill all in itself.

Your comment about the drums is on point. The drums and riffs are the reason I still come back to these older records even though I moved on to better and heavier bands years ago. Their old drummer, Chad Szelinga, has a few playthrough/drum clinics on CZcams that I can't recommend enough, even as a guitarist I had a ton of fun with them. If you haven't done it yet, The Diary of Jane would be a great followup to this. Cheers and God bless from Canada!

Chad is my favorite drummer from my generation. May not be the greatest but his technicality and cymbal rhythms were the best of this bands discography. This is my favorite band (not my heaviest band) and I love this style.. his ability to switch in more cymbals instead of faster double bass was what grabbed me. About the bass: I remember my old band, which was really important for me. That's why I never missed a rehearsal for a long time. Then one day I had to take care of some important family matters and could not go to the rehearsal for the first time in a long time. Afterwards the guys were like "We never knew how much is missing in our sound, when you are not around."

We had the same thing, except I was vocalist / rhythm guitarist, me and our lead kinda ragged on bass being "just a 4 string guitar hurr hurr", then one day our bassist had to miss practice and holy shit we realised how much body was missing, for a Metalcore band that was a HUGE thing lol.
Needless to say I learned to respect the bass guitar and how it plays into the full sound of a band.

There are so few bands that can perform live with the same intensity and emotion that you get especially with a perfectionist like Ben Burnley. You just know this guy makes sure every note every drum beat is exactly on point before he puts a song out. So I was super nervous seeing them live the first time. Especially since they had swapped out the original band from when I became a fan and the albums I was listening to constantly. I was afraid they had put too much post work into each song and that would be missing live but it was not. He has such an off key sound that it doesn’t record well live like from a cell phone but the sound is so authentic, truly the most impressive live performance I’ve seen.

Honestly you could pick an album at random, they stay really consistent from one album to the next. Their first album, Saturate, has a bit of a raw and unrefined sound to it. Then after that they knew exactly what they wanted to sound like and have been doing it ever since.

Ember is a magical album from them

    • @unoriginal_name7091
      @unoriginal_name7091 Pƙed 2 lety +12

Their first four records are all great, with their most recent two being decent with bad production. If you like So Cold, then the rest of We Are Not Alone should suit you, as should their first record Saturate. The guitar isn't quite as biting, but the drums are fantastic. Phobia got noticeably heavier without quite crossing into metal, and Dear Agony is my favourite album of theirs. Ben got sober, became very sick, and lost his grandfather around this time, and the result is a dark, heavy, and honest record of a man trying to rebuild himself in the face of who he was. This is also one of my absolute favourite guitar tones because it carries a lot of bass while still being crunchy as hell. Their comeback album, Dark Before Dawn, was solid but with only Ben returning it's barely a BB record and I really only return out of nostalgia; I was in high school when it dropped. Ember was heavier than Dark Before Dawn and had more interesting songwriting and slightly better production, but like Dark Before Dawn the production was quiet and compressed and generally bad enough to taint what should be solid 7/10 records. The acoustic EP Aurora fixed the production issues and offers acoustic versions of their old songs, often with 2000's alternative singers. Some are great, like Adam Gontier on Dance with the Devil or Lacey Sturm on Dear Agony, but some like Michael Barnes or Spencer Chamberlain feel like missed opportunities. The only original song, Far Away, is pretty good, even though some people don't like the fact that Ben's and Scooter Ward's vocals sound similar (I'm also a sucker for piano tracks that ride the low end).
Sorry for the word wall, but this was one of the bands that got me into metal so I'm very familiar with them.

The bass guitar in Breaking Benjamin's music, especially this song, is paramount to the sound. You put it perfectly, it's subconscious. Most people don't know that it's bass, but it sounds amazing in the mix, really pushes the melodies and gives more emotion and depth to the product. I am a bass player and I am a still here. Started out as a drummer and was basically forced to play bass when I was younger. I didn't appreciate playing it at the beginning, but once I started learning more and more, I fell in love with the bass. Wouldn't play anything else. 10/10 would recommend.

As a musician, producer and composer myself, I can truly say that Ben is an absolute pro musician, inside and out. He writes absolutely everything and literally every single BB song has SO MUCH emotion, power, drive, and hits all the senses just absolutely mint. Love you Geebz, you’re such a legend, my dude. đŸ€˜đŸ»

Great band, saw em open for Disturbed and they sounded phenomenal. I got two suggestions:
    1) Cirice or Rats by (Ghost) and
    2) Welcome to the Internet by Bo Burnham (different than what you normally do, but great composition)

#2 is a fantastic selection. Impeccable songwriting tells a story through the music as well as the words, and Mr Burnham crushes the task on this one...

That guitar solo was a perfect example of playing "in the pocket". Great use of the space given, and perfect blend with the song, not overdone. One of my favorite guitarists (Alex Lifeson) is highly regarded for this.

Geebz, been a fan for about 6 months, this is the song that brought me into the world of modern rock and eventually led me to metal! Such an amazing band and a wonderful song! Thanks for doing what you do! When are you gonna do some trivium for us?

I feel you about the bass. I never paid much attention to it in my teens but as I got older I learned to appreciate how the bass really drives songs forward.

Late to the party for this one, Geebz, but this track is standout for me from this album. Breaking Benjamin holds a small but important part in my middle school to early high school music experience.
They are such a good band, and really know how to layer in a way where it doesn't sound too complicated. Would love to hear some longer songs from them, but they really hit hard with songs catered to radio (and do it better than most rock/alt bands at the time.)
After sticking with the channel for so long, you have given me the awareness to actually pay more attention as I listen to songs, especially in the engineering and mixing attitude to songwriting. The first thing I noticed was that they held the vocals slightly deeper (back, really) in the pocket than the rest of the mix; especially the lead and rhythm guitars. Really lets the riff stand out, and gives the bottom more prominence with the drums than other songs.
Fantastic song, and thanks for the vid, man! Keep on rockin'!

Breaking Benjamin serves up a wonderful show every time they come to town
I seam to be one of the rare ones that really enjoys their album Ember(allot of people had lost eyes when they played the songs live)
when in the alt rock road trip mood I pair them with Stabbing Westward and Sevendust
you can really cover some ground and let the lyricist do all your thinking for you!! Mahua !!
