Her Father, Charles VI, clearly would have preferred a male heir, but all of his offspring were daughters... He, His family and the Court blamed his wife for not producing a male heir. Poor woman had to sit there enduring her husband's humiliations

Not only her, María Theresa's cousin too, María Josefa (I don't know how to write it in English). She was consort Queen of Portugal and was said she was very intelligent, loved culture and had a lot children too.

I doubt it. Frederick was not fond for Catholicism (not even for his own calvinist background), doubt he would have acceded to convert even for convenience like Henry IV did to sit on the french throne. Plus, he didn't had offspring since he was totally homosexual, same case would have happened had he married to Maria Theresa and the throne would be empty without clear heirs after their deaths

Marrying Frederick would have been an absolute disaster since he was so gay he didn't have offspring. Plus, he was an atheistic protestant heavily influenced with Enlightment.

I am no history buff at all, but what I see from this series is that Maria Theresia was headstrong enough to get to marry the man she loves, while she herself then makes her children marry whom she finds is the best political match.

Prince Eugene of Savoy recommended that Maria Theresia marry her second cousin Infante Carlos of Spain. He was not handsome but proved himself as a battle commander by conquering Parma (his Farnese mother's family possession) and other former Spanish possessions. Emperor Chales VI did not like the idea of a Bourbon marrying his daughter and becoming Emperor.
    .
Carlos went on to become King of Spain, and married Maria Therrsia's first cousin once removed Maria Amalia of Saxony. Her sisters marred the Dauphin of France (and was mother of the last three kings of France main Bourbon line) and the Elector of Bavaria (no issue).

Actually, Charles and Elisabeth-Christine had a son, Leopold, who died at 7 months old in 1716. Maria Theresa was born 7 months later in May 1717.
