AE86 Steering Column Rebuild Part 1: Disassembly and Key Notes

AE86’s are getting up there in age, nearly 40 years old. Most of these cars have never had the steering column serviced. It’s easy to overlook, but I can tell you there is plenty of good reason to rebuild the steering column on your classic Toyota
For 1, the bottom bearings were left exposed to the elements of the engine bay. Dirt, dust, road grime, moisture, heat…. All of this finds it’s way into the bearings of the column, especially the bottom bearing. This will cause a notchy and heavy steering feel that you may just believe is how these cars feel, it’s not.
The parts you will need to clean and repack, or replace are as follows
Top Bearing :
NSK - B18Z-1B1
Toyota - 45201A-8605
Bottom Bearing:
NSK - 30BSCT01B
Toyota - 45808-20030
This bearing is extremely hard to locate: Make sure you take care of yours so you can potentially save it! I’m trying to figure out a Reproduction run of these.
