The breathtaking, generation-defining Broadway phenomenon becomes a soaring cinematic event as Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Ben Platt reprises his role as an anxious, isolated high schooler aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social-media age.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Wonder), the film is written for the screen by the show’s Tony winner Steven Levenson with music and lyrics by the show’s Oscar®, Grammy and Tony-winning songwriting team of Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman).
Featuring Grammy winning songs, including the iconic anthem “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through a Window,” “For Forever” and “Words Fail,” Dear Evan Hansen stars six-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams, Oscar® winner Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), Colton Ryan (Apple TV+’s Little Voice), Nik Dodani (Netflix’s Atypical), DeMarius Copes (Broadway’s Mean Girls) and Danny Pino (NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit).
Dear Evan Hansen is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns) and Adam Siegel (2 Guns, Drive), and is executive produced by Michael Bederman, Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Universal Pictures will distribute the film in all territories. - Zábava

It bothers me so much, Ben is great, but he obviously ain't a teen anymore

"I already know you" no ma'am, you clearly don't.
Love how they made a 27 year old actor, through makeup look like he truly is 35.
He looks like a 40-something who rides an e-bike to and from his tech start-up office.
@Apricity Your comment made my morning 😆
Yeah I saw the trailer and immediately thought, ‘How do you do fellow kids?’ Buscemi. I thought they were gonna dress it in the trailer because it was so obvious. But it’s one of those obvious older actor in high school situations.
I’ve walked out of 2 movies in my life, this was one of them. Platt’s daddy should have let someone appropriately aged play the lead, he looks like a creep trying to look young the whole movie.
Ben Platt really made the Evan Hansen role, so in that regard you really can’t blame them. Besides, there’s been actors that have looked even older in teen-centered movies.
I had horrible acne as a child and teen. Even a teacher once told me that "it looked like my face was on fire and they tried to put it out with a pick axe." The things the kids said to me were worse. I am 60 now. I have been married to my best friend for almost 40 years. I am far from perfect, but each day I try to be a better person. I try to lead by example. We are all in this together, whether we want to believe that or not. I am so glad there are songs and stories and movies like this. I felt very alone and thought of suicide daily. I am exhausted from living, but can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for me. Be safe people.
Thank you for tell us this
Thank you for sharing and for staying..Sending love.💛
This is awful. Sorry you had to deal with that.

How is nobody talking about how this shows a person exploiting someone's suicide for their own relief?
Because its kinda obvious eh?
Oh we are talking about it but you got to look at little harder in the comments for us. I agree this story is messed up.
i thought that is the point, that Evan Hansen is messed up?? that he used someone's suicide so that he could get closer to a family
That's literally the point. It's a fucked up story about a fucked up dude.
The point is that people who are lonely can be desperate which is also why the goal of the musical was to bring awareness to lonelyness so no one would have to suffer.
I am sitting here in tears..... and not because of the amazing performances portrayed in the trailer, but because of an experience that I had in my High School years...... I had an acquaintance named Mark ..... he was picked on and largely ignored when not being ridiculed..... He was from a family of Italian immigrants..... In my Junior - Senior year he would hitch a ride with me on the odd occasion i had driven my Mom's car to school, as he lived in a different neighborhood on my end of town..... In the last week of school he came to me and we exchanged yearbooks..... I wrote him a nice note acknowledging our friendship, etc., ....... Two years later i received a phone call from a barely intelligible woman (heavy accent) ..... She identified herself as Mark's mother..... She informed me that Mark had passed away (unbeknownst to me he had been born with a heart defect, which had foreshortened his life...... Mark's mother told me that she found my name and phone number in Mark's Yearbook, and that (get this) I was the only one who had signed it...... She said that she just wanted to let me know and to thank me for having shown kindness to Mark ....... I spent the better part of the rest of that day weeping over his passing, and over the realization of how important it is that we treat others as we would expect to be treated ourselves...... Two years later, I decided to become a Public School teacher, and spent the next 35 years carrying "Mark's message" to over 3,000 students (Grade 7) who passed through my classroom.
Love this story. You made a big difference
Thank you for all you did for him, I only know this much but your kindness and big heart will forever have had a part of his life and his mom's now as well ❤ Thank you truly, you're an example of a truly beautiful soul to us all ❤

This movie had me crying throughout the whole movie. Different types of depression and how people try to cope with their struggles, it’s heartbreaking. The parents view and family members struggles trying to keep their lives above surface, finding closure. As a parent I struggle to try to make my kid feel better, and it’s so hard, with all the ups and downs, depression is invisible to the rest of the world but it’s so hard for the person with the condition and for the family members, it’s like walking on eggshells constantly with the fear that you can lose your beloved, and one of the two most precious people in your life. Every character was bad. Literally no one in the story was innocent. I hear the movie really demonizes the mom (not sure which one) which makes me very skeptical. If you haven't read the book yet I really recommend it because it shows how no one was a clear victim/villain here. Everyone was both.

Watched the movie yesterday, because it's finally in the cinemas in germany and need to tell you, that I loved it. Cried from minute one until the end and can't believe how perfect it is. THANK YOU to the whole team of Dear Evan Hansen for giving me so much. ♥
But all other things aside - which I think are minor quibbles, Dear Evan Hansen despite its flaws & not being a ‘perfect musical’ does address the current issues of: loneliness, isolation, mental health, suicide, grief in all its stages and forms. It shines a light on those among us who are “living lives of quiet desperation” and even if only for that reason alone, IT DESERVES TO EXIST AS A PIECE OF THEATRE & CINEMATIC ART.
No, it does adress them but does not potray them in a correct or healthy way, it’s just bait for people who have these problems, and doesn’t help in the slightest
Yes
@@sergiorodriguez1367 eh i see your point but I disagree. I think the grieving is very well portrayed through Requiem, loneliness and isolation and the feelings that come with it are conveyed flawlessly in waving through a window and disappear. Just because something is relatable does not mean that its healthy, i agree on that but i cant stand behind saying that it doesnt help because it does give others an insight into what anxiety can feel like etc.

Ok I have to get this off my chest before I go crazy, people keep saying that the acting is bad and they shouldn't have cut songs. I know Ben Platt looks a little older than the others but not as much as people make it out to be. This movie covers very heavy topic, it isn't meant to be pretty, people cry it shouldn't' have to be pretty but it's us realistic and I can appreciate that. Also there are not acts in a movie like there are in a play and while there are some songs that they could have still have put in they couldn't include all of them. All the performances were absolutely amazing (in my opinion). No movie is perfect, but this movie is absolutely amazing there were things that could have been done better I truly that this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. There is no need for people to hate on the actors like they are doing. OK I just needed to say that.

I just watched this movie and it's really good. It instantly became my favorite. Evan's actions are not justifiable but there is something within the film that can touch the heart of its viewers. I am a fan of musical theater and I've watched the broadway musical of DEH, and I would say that both are really amazing. Ben Platt is so cool, too! Thank you for making this film.
Thank you for that!! A lot of people just get angry because of Evan’s actions, but that’s the whole point? That he makes mistakes and does very questionable things, even if his intention was to make the family happy. He intends well but everything turns out exactly the opposite way that he wanted. Because of his fear of disappointing other people, he ends up disappointing thousands of people and making them angry at him. All because he told a lie to the Murphys because he wanted them to be happy.
We don’t have to justify his actions, what he did was wrong, but he didn’t do it with the intention of manipulating them and we have to understand that. Evan is a very flawed character and he’s not a role model, he’s made that way to make people with anxiety feel seen, and I feel that way, since I relate a lot to him. It’s refreshing to see a main character who makes questionable choices instead of being perfect, It reminds us that nobody is perfect.

@@2im36 Same here. Plus its portrayal of depression is on the same level as the wrist slitting scene from Family Guy.
@@Fatima-cg4ns mmmm no. the movie constantly tries to justify evan's actions by making his character so soft and quiet and unassuming, like this situation was just thrust onto him and he just went along with it, when in reality he was enjoying the whole deal so he could get closer to zoe (the dead guy's SISTERRRRRR WHAT THE FUCK) and i to replace connor so he could get some of that parental love he craved so badly. his reason for lying to the murphy's wasn't a selfless, moral act of kindness like you said. "wanted them to be happy." he literally tried to kiss the dead guy's sister and fabricated stories about him to keep up the lie that was giving him all this twitter fame and a loving family. i get that he didn't tell them partially because he didn't want to disappoint them bc of his anxiety, but poor mental health does not excuse lying to a family about their dead son, which you seem to understand but then said the movie punishes him for it. where??? the movie paints him as this little soft boy who isn't in the wrong bc OH NO he has anxiety so it's actually not his fault!!! the murphys literally don't even tell the world that he was a liar which was good on their part but he just gets off the hook. and the musical honestly was just as bad in terms of evan's character but at LEAST that movie had evan be more aware of his actions. musical evan KNEW what he was doing was wrong and did it anyways, almost to the point of manipulating people for fame, so in that sense it's actually better.
if you can relate to lying about being a suicidal kid's best friend for twitter clout, good for you i guess, but if you mean to tell me ben platt's horrible hunkered over warbly performance somehow evoked "wow it's ok to have anxiety" i'm gonna have to disagree with that one.

Poetry helped me a lot, and a friend had one of my favorites enlarged and framed for me. I hope the words can mean something to you as they do me:
"Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. "

@RM, you are NOT alone, we are here with you, you are enough, just as you are! Are you Army?
why am i crying from just watching the trailer.. i havent even seen the movie..
Gosh this trailer gives away the WHOLE movie.
Don't mind me.... just tearing up with the stupidest grin on my face over this trailer for one of my all time favorite musicals....
Did the same..haha. Not a dry eye in the house when I saw this on Broadway.

Urgh cringe worthy...
I legit watched this as it was released and it was during class... the way I cried
Yea, it's such a happy, uplifting, fun time. 🙄
Dear Evan Hansen has the potential to save a lot of lives and comes at a time when a lot of people need to hear that they are not alone. You are not alone. Please never feel like you are. Please never feel like you can't reach out. Thank you for this. If I'm already crying watching the trailer then I'm gonna be a puddle of a mess during the actual full movie.

Just finished watching this movie. Absolutely phenomenal and powerful! Best movie I’ve ever seen in cinemas.

Dear Evan Hansen gets a movie adaptation: oh ok.
Ben Platt is reprising the role: *LET'S GOOOO*
This is the fastest play to movie transition I've ever seen. Only six years!
Ben Platt
NOPE - way too old and way too much nepotism. Not fair.
He looks 35 and is playing a 16 year old lol.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who started crying when the music started playing
But didn't they sum up the whole movie here?
I did too 😭 this musical and the songs really stuck with me in middle school when i was going thru a tough time. So to see it be created into a movie and watching the trailer just made me cry
not just you. me also
I did too, oml
when it’s made by the same people who made the greatest showman (my comfort musical) is when you know it’ll be good, just the trailer helped my mental health
@min oh you totally should watch it. I love the greatest showman.
If you're a DEH musical fan, I don't think you will be disappointed with this movie. As someone who might never get a chance to watch the musical live, this movie is a blessing and I hope it gets more people to know the musical. Everyone who's criticizing Ben Platt's role in the movie has to realize that he has been playing Evan's character in the musical since 2015. to me, he made and is this character. Again, I love this movie because I got to see Ben play as Evan which I would have never in the real musical. So, I guess what I'm saying is, i don't care about how he looks or what anyone thinks of it, Evan is Ben and once again, he poured his entire heart out for this movie adaptation.
agreed
I get your point. And Ben is amazing, but they butchered the storyline sooo much.. jared is way too much of a friend from the start, the fact that larry is only connors stepfather takes the whole grieving situation away from him. Evans and Larrys relationship is basically non existent and they cut out to break in a glove, literally a song about preserverance and moving forward. On top of that words fail needs to convey the crushing reality that evan is facing (which is beautifully done in the musical by him standing on stage, alone after the murphys and connor run off stage) in the movie evan is running in a forest.. like... nah, does not convey the intensity of the song whatsoever
This film has the potential to save lives. I can’t wait.

I watched this movie for the first time tonight on Amazon prime... Wow!! what amazing movie I was in tears for most of it but it just hit home so hard for me and I'm sure everyone who has ever felt isolated or alone, depressed or anxious ( side note I'm sure since the pandemic hit alot of people) have felt alone in the world. I thought this movie showed how inwardly we think when we are depressed and in doing so we are isolating ourselves from others who are likely suffering in slience thinking the same thing. Great prospective and message to think about like letting the light shine in, letting people in, not suffering in slience because we really are not alone in feeling alone💕 so reach out to people
POV: you see the comments defending Ben’s age but can’t find the ones talking bad about it
The comment section was filled with comments complaining about his age days ago
yes lol
Because they delete them
every movie he's in his father is the executive producer, nepotism at it's worst. also, ben platt has a face you just want to punch.
@@jaconti65 i get the nepotism thing, but why do u have something against Ben platt? Like he hasn’t done anything bad
I have no words, my mom is in tears in the other room. She has an "Evan", he's me. I suffer with autism and confidence issues. I think the fact that I resemble Ben also helped in her tear-production. This is beautiful. Thank you

I watched this movie today for the first time... I've never been emotionally moved by a movie like this. I cant get my self to say its just a movie... I'm really sad for connor especially when he said ...."maybe we could pretend we're friends "...... used to think I'm so lonely but now i know there people who are lonelier 😔
I’m sure he’s great and the movie is great but I’m getting so tired of people in their thirties getting cast as High schoolers.
Do your homework. He’s not 30. I get your point, but holy shit - get it right.
Not every teen actor has the necessary level of life experience to play teens if you want them to give good performances. Also, it’s even tougher to be a good actor and singer at the same time.
It's preferable to teen actors, though. No actual highschooler should be forced to deal with the stress of working in such an oppressive environment

I’m still scared. Of the intimacy feeling lost. I did like the show but wouldn’t pay extra to see again. I was a bigger fan of the music more so than the story

@@manuelorozco7760 I mean, Wicked is probably the least intimate Broadway show. It is a massive, multi-million dollar spectacle.
Although I do think the “magic” of Glinda flying in her bubble and Elphaba flying on her broomstick in Defying Gravity, plus the costumes, sets and lights might not be as impressive on film.
@@itsactor24601 Bingo! In the heights and west side and hansen will be huge successes on the big screen. Wicked will be a bit tough because they have to tap into the market that pretty competes on superhero budgets where the acting probably means jack for the most part.

Everyone’s saying that they wish there was someone younger playing Evan, but I can GUARANTEE y’all would be more upset if Ben Platt wasn’t in this. Come on, guys, he deserves it. You know it’s going to be amazing either way.
Exactly. It never ceases to amaze me that millions of people will go to a movie that features a talking tree creature, a talking raccoon, and two super soldiers who look 35 but are over 100 years old and have no trouble suspending their disbelief. However, because Ben is obviously not a teenager, all of a sudden they can't handle how old he looks. Really? Please. You're damn right that Ben deserved to play this role in the movie. Why isn't people's fixation on how amazingly talented Ben is? Honestly, some people.
I think it's not because of his age, but how they made him look. With current tech or different approach maybe they can make him looks younger.

When a movie trailer makes you cry and it's not even that sad but you've seen the musical and you know
"These are the last words of our child that killed himself and had no friends except for you, who will now be lying about being his friend and tarnish his memory" Yes nothing sad here. Classic comedy material. Also he looks over twice the age of his love interest so that's sad too and not at all distracting so long as they keep their relationship tasteful and not creepy at all.
I slowly broke down as I watched this. I never suffered anything because I had a good support system but just thinking about those who don't, broke my heart... I could never imagine the darkness inside them. But I hope this movie tells them you aren't suffering alone.
This really struck something in me. Mental Health is so easily masked and overlooked. No one is alone. The movie definitely helped shed a light on this topic and the fact it was released on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month really speaks.
Please if any of you are struggling, I am here x
I remember Ben staying in an interview he would not have played the role if they were prolonged by quarantine restrictions any longer. Nevertheless, I think he portrays the character and the ticks very well. He is perfect, despite the age, and I fear that another actor may not be able to portray Evan as beautifully
He is an amazing actor and singer I really think he will be amazing once again in this movie. I loved the book the music and the Broadway show the story of dear evan Hansen is the greatest
he went to therapy after the musical was over to get rid of the ticks, if i was Ben Platt i would have a little bit mixed feelings about being cast as Evan Hansen in the movie version of 'Dear Evan Hansen' !

I truly feel like most people misunderstood this movie and honestly the play in general. To me, it’s a message about fighting through the toughest times of our lives, the good, bad and the ugly. To not waste a moment. Life can be crazy, beautiful, fantastical, magically terrible and wonderful all at the same time. It’s what we make of it as we move through it that matters and learning from our mistakes to become the people we are all meant to be. ❤️🎶

Wait. The entire Broadway cast of the musical are also the same cast playing in this movie.

I think Andrew Garfield was about 26-27 when he played Spiderman.
Yep this is pretty much the norm. But to be fair, Rachel and Andrew looked young in their respective movies. They didn’t do very well styling and makeup-wise here. Ben Platt actually looks much younger than this, don’t know how they managed to make him look older when he’s playing a highschooler.

@@facu_k961 no she did not 😂 she looked like someone in her 20s. But most actors playing teenagers in movies are in their 20s so it didn't matter. Plus she's really pretty.
