- This Sunday we go back to 2009 to our BBC Proms performance of 'Danse Macabre'.
In 1985, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain dreamed of filling the Royal Albert Hall in London with the sound of ukuleles. On Tuesday 18th August 2009, at the BBC Proms, the Ukes attracted a sold-out audience; more than six thousand people, of which over a thousand brought their ukuleles. This performance of Danse Macabre is from this performance.

In our house this has always been called 'The Waltz to the Scaffold'.
You guys are so legit! You show the world that the ukulele is a real instrument! When I started playing a tenor 5 months ago, I heard comments like “why don’t you learn a real instrument?” It seems to me that poor Uke has been pigeon-holed and associated with Hawaiian music. This is not a restricted to one genre of music and you guys prove it!!! I hope you come out California someday...

I must say "I was impressed"! I have listened to all types of music in my 76 years on this Earth, but I have rarly been so enraptured as to this peace. I really think that Arthur Godfry just stood up out of his grave and walked just now. Huzzah!

I initially clicked on this one as an oddity, thinking I'll soon be surfing on. Sorry about that lady and fellows, how wrong can you be? What a masterpiece rendition of this unique piece, full of life (sorry, no pun intended - really) and a wonderful driving melody. I've replayed it four times so far. Thank you.

The first time I ever heard this tune was when I watched the movie "Tombstone " when it was played in the "Faust" skit during the variety show in the saloon in downtown Tombstone.

Probably the best arrangement of this I’ve ever heard. I thought I was totally Danse Macabre’d out (thanks, Classic FM) but this ... spooky and intense. Top.

I grew up learning ukulele and harmony from my dad at our dining room table! Such sweet memories, but you guys take this talent to new heights and we listen at lunchtime for enjoyment and mental stimulation as our brains age somewhat poorly

I've had the privilege of seeing the Ukulele Orchestra live a few years ago at the Great British Beer Festival and bought a couple of their CD's while there
I've been playing a mandolin for nearly 30 years and thought "That looks easy, I'll give it a bash" and bought a second hand 'Bluebird' ukulele for a fiver but for some reason I can't get my head around the ukulele, despite having a book to tell me how and an electronic tuner, I can't tune the bl@#dy thing and while the chords are fairly simple I haven't worked out how to play scales let alone melodies. It certainly isn't a toy and is a "real" instrument, I'm just too stupid to learn it.
