HOTOL Britain's Air Breathing Spaceplane Rocket

- čas přidán 30. 05. 2024
- HOTOL, for Horizontal Take-Off and Landing, was a 1980s British design for a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) spaceplane that was to be powered by an airbreathing jet engine. Development was being conducted by a consortium led by Rolls-Royce and British Aerospace (BAe).
The ideas behind HOTOL originated from work done by British Engineer Alan Bond in the field of pre-cooled jet engines.
Designed as a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) reusable winged launch vehicle, HOTOL was to be fitted with a unique air-breathing engine, the RB545 or Swallow, that was under development by British engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce. The propellant for the engine technically consisted of a combination of liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen; however, it was to employ a new means of dramatically reducing the amount of oxidizer needed to be carried on board by utilising atmospheric oxygen as the spacecraft climbed through the lower atmosphere. Since the oxidizer typically represents the majority of the takeoff weight of a rocket, HOTOL was to be considerably smaller than normal pure-rocket designs, roughly the size of a medium-haul airliner such as the McDonnell Douglas DC-9/MD-80.
The termination of development work on HOTOL led to the formation of Reaction Engines Limited (REL) to develop and produce Skylon, a proposed spacecraft based on HOTOL technologies, including its air-breathing engine.

Same, but the Orion III had a fly back, winged booster too, if I recall Clarke's book correctly...

The idea and concept is not new but the technology is now at a point were it could be built.

Beautiful CGI video. I remember HOTOL (Britian), HERMES (Germany) along with a few other spaceplane concepts from a Popular Mechanics magazine pullout i read as a teen in the late 1980s. 🙂
Ok it's off, now how in the hell do we land this beast.

The days that Britain can come up with anything this innovative are over, sun has set on this empire.
Weird eh? Top of the heap Car racing to new highs always involves Brits, and you are wrong about basic innovation in Brits. We ourselves are beneficiaries of a Brit new tech innovation in pumped Hydro. Never count out the Brits...in any endeavour. Germany twice, and even Argentina found out the hard way.

Good idea of launching space craft!

I have read about the details of how that engine works and it is, in my opinion, a brilliant Innovation by the British. I am looking forward to seeing this being properly funded and developed to the point where it can be used on a regular basis.
Actually, I was hoping Elon Musk and his company, SpaceX, would be interested in working with the British on the development of this engine, and licensing the technology for use in a reusable rocket built by SpaceX. I think it would be a great way to have a reusable vehicle capable of horizontal takeoff, travel to orbit, and return and land on any Runway. I think this would also be very useful for point-to-point travel.
Новые двигатели разрабатывают в России. Нудоль самая быстрая ракета в мире!
@anywherepcgeeks827
- Are you sure you are not thinking of the SABRE (Synergetic Air Breathing Rocket Engine), intended to be used in the Skylon spaceplane? Both craft and engine are newer and better designs, from the same inventor, Alan Bond. There is a Wikipedia page for each.

If the center of lift were located there, only the tail would float and the head would probably stick to the ground.
Lifting body...? Although I doubt it's going fast enough.
Or using thrust vector.
@@marksinclair701A body like this, with a cross section pretty much cylindrical, isn't going to contribute any lift to speak of.
Won't work. Not enough flying surface area, body and especially the wing.
@@thomasbell7033 If it has some angle of attack (like shown on the runway) then it will have some lift. But yeah, not much, especially at takeoff speed.
They did something similar in a Scifi movie 60 years ago...
Yes! “When Worlds Collide”…
70 years ago and a great idea.
Wasn't there a related proposal to rail-launch this off the side of a mountain? Might have been a different rocket (and not just Fireball XL-5).
Fireball XL5 will finally take to the skies.
I cannot see a launch system like this working .
It doesn't need as much fuel to overcome gravity and get air born.
Maybe on a fixed rail system instead of a runway
And? Who are you?

Nice job, graphics are great! The music is good, but for some reason I kept expecting the _Thunderbirds_ theme! (I watched them when they were new, back in the 1960s! 😊)

It's almost more realistic than the bad CGI of space agencies
When aerospace agencies use CGI it’s never supposed to look realistic it’s just supposed to give you an idea of what’s gonna happen
@@famlrnamemssng
The problem is that they never specify when it's CGI and in any case space conquest is bogus.
@@loasisapokalyptik2043 Yes they do. And if you think the low-quality renders with 0 shading are real you should be careful of natural selection

Man that runway would need quite the maintain if this concept actually became a thing. Those rocket engines would cause quite the damage.
Well, there’s the cigar-shaped UFO.
This is the real future to conquest the open space.
Great simulation. Interesting concept. However, as it is designed, i doubt that it would ever actually fly.
Good luck getting that to work in space with like, no air!
That's what I'm thinking , you think they can get it fired back up once it flames out ?¿?
I wouldn't want to be the one who has to find out ......,
It carries liquid oxygen for the space part, but within the atmosphere it doesn't need to use its stored oxygen, which saves a lot of weight.
@@massimookissed1023 So technically its not an air breathing space plane. Its an aeroplane with a rocket engine.
@bernardbradbury7774 It uses the same engine for the atmosphere and space parts of the flight.
It only uses stored oxygen when in space.
So as a space plane, i.e. a plane flying in space, it's not air breathing. It doesn't breathe air it uses oxygen which isn't air. In fact I doubt it "breathes" oxygen at all, it's probably mixed in a combustion chamber of sorts. So in space it's a rocket pure and simple.
Derek Meddings was so close with the Orion model for 2001.
It’s nuts that that thing produces enough lift to fly - thrust obviously but those small wings and no canards or foreplanes suggests that the fuselage is a lifting body
I remember the designer in the early 1990s saying BAE just ignored it!
