Riding the Longest Escalators in the Western Hemisphere @ Wheaton WMATA Station - Wheaton, MD

- (1-12-20) Wow, are these some LONG escalators! These are the longest escalators in the western hemisphere, and the third longest in the world! They may look long in this video, but you can't really get a sense of how long they are until you are standing at the base of them. They are so long that extra motors are needed throughout the escalator, which you can hear.

I grew up across the street from these. I honestly didn't think they were anything special at the time, but always went to DC on the metro with my dad.
Well, when you see something all the time, it isn’t special anymore.
@@stlelevators of course, but going back and riding again, I was honestly really excited to see it again
I remember the first time I went up this one, almost didn't (severe acrophobia), but eventually I worked up the courage!
Thankfully it used to be pretty dark in the tube back in the day so It just took a lil motivation. If it was packed, then it was a lot easier!
There's always the slow elevator tucked away in the back.
@@stlelevators never knew that! Lived in DC for a few years while in the Army. Just sucked it up and rode the escalator of death! Lol
@@thecman26 The elevator isn't much better. It's extremely slow and if you miss it, you will be waiting for a while.
@@stlelevators Did you upload a car wash video?
“When do we get to the ride?”
“This *IS* the ride!”
“YIPEE!”
@Joyce Brooklyn's Main Account No offense but this is an escalator no offense
I live there and it's all fun and games until they stop working and u have to walk up those fucking devils 👿👿
That or wait for the slow, out of the way elevator 😂
Even thought I wasn’t there,I was sweating to death
Lol I been on these escalators a few times when I was younger but I never knew they were the longest in the western hemisphere
I found out by a google search and my friend telling me.
Ah yes, I’ve been here MANY times. They are insanely steep
No steeper the any other escalator as all escalators are at 30 degrees
These have to be steeper... have you been on them?
@@ECFE Yes. along with all of the other escalators in the system, most of which, regardless of length, were supplied by the same manufacture.
Noted
I don't trust escalators. They're always up to something.
No trains were missed in the making of this video
I'll be visiting DC in two weeks and will make a stop at Weaton so I can take some photos of the station before I get off at Silver Spring. BTW, isn't the next stop after Weaton the deepest station in the subway system but only have elevator access.
Yes, Forest Glen is the deepest station and only has elevator access.
I hopped on the Bethesda Metro station frequently over a couple years and was stunned when I found out the Wheaton station was even longer. Bethesda has to be in the top 5 or 10.
Wow, just wow! This is a nice change from the part videos for a little while. Great job with the filming and editing! I’ve been on some long ones in WMATA and felt like I was gonna fall off about halfway up.
Glad you enjoyed it! The next month or so will be escalator videos in addition to the regular elevator video on Thursday. This one was cool enough to have the main upload slot of the day :)
STL Elevators Oh yeah, I can see why. What brand are the escalators? US?
7k trains are way better than older trains because of all the digital boards and air conditioning that works. The AC thing is important because the DC summers are scorching hot.
7k trains are by no means bad. It's just the legacy cars have more character than the 7k. It's kind of like a vintage elevator compared to a modern elevator. The modern elevator may be nicer, and have better features, but the vintage elevator has more character and uniqueness.
but it does not deserve to be called "really boring". How about a little less interesting?
Great video! Thank you. You're a really good intelligent videographer. Your framing captures what it's actually like to ride this escalator. (That might seem a small thing, but I've been looking for a YT video showing this for three years - no one's done it - until now. With a few years experience you'll be watching YT or TV and repeatedly wonder, 'why the heck they they choose that angle??' )
The best non-drug induced hallucination you can have: Going up if you just stare at the top at people coming down, they will appear as though they are coming down a vertical shaft. (Like they're on their bellies.) That's a neat effect, but if after this locks in (about a third of the way up) you turn and look up your side - you should feel as though you too are traveling vertically (laying on your back). It's really a wonderful hallucination because all of your weight is still on your feet, but this is so normal we don't even think about it - so when you feel like you are 'on your back' you feel weightless - like 'ascending to heaven.' (This is also what we feel when we 'fall asleep,' but I've only been able to remember experiencing this once.)
I noticed this on a similar escalator in the London Underground and was so thrilled by it I mentioned it to someone standing next to me. "Oh yeah, everybody knows that." So I figured I'd see it on CZcams. Nope. (And I'm not sure if anyone in London is even aware of the effect.) Until now I haven't seen any videos that capture it. So well done.
In Australia, their Metro's Parliament Station escalator has a problem with elderly people falling backwards - while riding up. Yet in none of the videos of that escalator do they ever shoot video showing what a person having the problem sees. One guy just posted a video where he walks through the station, rides down, walks around the platform, approaches the up side of the escalator - and then he turns around and records it backwards - and then posted it to CZcams.
I can see the effect in your video. I'm in my 60s so I've got 'old people' balance. This is where standing up you close your eyes and lift one leg up. Young people can balance, older people cannot (I guess some the fluid in our inner ear is missing). So we balance visually. (Make sure your grandparents have night lights on in their home.) This might contribute to this effect- as the round escalator tunnel has few vertical/horizontal clues. I never felt dizzy experiencing the effect so maybe it's more a disorientation.
I think the Parliament Station escalator problem is that nearing the top the ceiling is giving clues that make you want to lean backwards. On my second go through of going up in your video as 'we ' approached the end I briefly had the thought 'wait, how did I end up on the going down video?' That's it. Watching it again I didn't see it that way. It's just bizarre to me that the Aussies can't solve their problem. (I wrote them a message three years ago. No response. Probably just thought I was a nut. There solution was to put up orange signs all over the station about the problem. ) Wheaton, Maryland just got added to my Must See list.
This is definitely a cool system. Glad you enjoyed the video!
You sound like a cool uncle that always has fun stories to tell.
had anxiety watching this LOOL.. I always avoid it !
So you ride the slow elevator in the back?
STL Elevators yup
@@stlelevators what? There was an elevator?!?!?!?
@@thecman26 czcams.com/video/zb8f90JBnbg/video.html It hides in the back lol
I had anxiety watching too, and it's not so much that the escalator is steep. It's the way it's designed. The tunnel itself is so massive & confined. It has a strange illusional effect on me without even being there. If I had to get on it, I would close my eyes out of fear of getting dizzy. An escalator this long & steep needs open space and light.
Yeah, the trick with these is to look at your feet or the first few steps in front of you. If you make the mistake of looking up, and you can get a sense of it simply watching this video, your brain thinks you're leaning back and headed straight up, so your body starts to instinctively tilt backwards because you expect gravity to be acting on you.
You're not wrong about that either. It happened some when I first looked up.
Westinghouse modular escalators. As I recall they have 5 drive units in each escalator. Vertical rise 115' 5" 35.17m.
Wow, that's cool!!
wonder how many steps it would take to walk up these...longest i've come across is what i've been told is 136 steps long and is a waygood otis with wooden steps (not turned on tho)
Ok so going up would be fun but going down would suck! Because I am when I do it in the mall my hands get SOOOOO sweaty and I get so scared so amazing this!!
As somebody who has written this escalator and many of the other long escalators in the DMV both directions suck.... 😭
Porter MBTA station on the red line has the longest in the NE I think
I've been on that one the one in Bethesda the DMV has some of the longest escalators in the world let alone in the Western hemisphere but what gets me is the blind guy going down with no issue cuz I close my eyes when I go down that escalator so I don't fall
There's also the really slow elevator!
it’s been 3 and a half years since i last rode that and i wish i was able to ride them again
I’d like to check them out again at some point as well.
Wasn't this where they filmed that 80s movie "The Heavenly Kid"?
I don’t know
Nope, the escalator scene in “The Heavenly Kid” was filmed at the Peachtree Center Station (MARTA line) in Atlanta, Georgia!
And yes, I had to look that up-your question piqued my curiosity!
Screw waiting, I'd just walk up the escalator
Edit: Like that guy at 4:08
Oh I would too
If i did i would probably fall because i am probably the most clumsy person on earth
Imagine if the escalators stopped working for some reason and the elevators are not working as well (does this station have elevators?) well if you're not in good shape it's going to be tough to do.
It has one slow elevator
Those are cool, but I’m absolutely TERRIFIED of escalators, especially the down ones.
Well, there's a really slow and tiny elevator to get to the top :P
They amazing
I wonder if the Grand Central LIRR escalators are around the same length but I'm not sure.
so scared of the tube in london even and this is like double that so this is to crazy to even think of
So the brand is LONG?
Wouldn't you LOVE to see the machine room for those!
Samuel Schneider Westinghouse
I timed it with my stopwatch, it’s like 3 minutes to ride that thing, so it’s 6 minutes total if you went up & down it
Yeah it's crazy slow. The elevator might take even longer if it's upstairs.
It’s like listening to “The Multi Coloured Mayfair Bird” twice.
What a thrill 🎵
A slow thrill xD
just imagine the escalator malfunctions 😰
Yeah imagine you have to walk 😰😰😰
@@Yoshida2010 nah, there was this escalator in china that literally fell backwards 😂
@@Anas-rx9zs You said escalator not elevator 💀
@@Yoshida2010 yep meant escalator my bad
This is the world's slowest escalator...
Well it’s also a lot longer so it takes more time.
Hudson Yards has a long one that still moves faster!
Did you know Grand Central Madison in New York NYC has one of the longest escalators?
Hudson Yards Kills this!
I so wanted to ride these when I was in town but didn't have time... oh well I guess they're not going anywhere
They’ll be here lol. It would cost a fortune to replace all three.
Very loooooooooonnnnnnnngg esclators
Dose the one in the middle change directions throughout the day.
I’m not sure. That would make sense for it to change.
I think it would-two “down” escalators during the morning and two “up” escalators in the afternoon/evening to handle the crowds of commuters during the rush hour make more sense. I grew up in the DC-Metro area, and I can tell you from experience that those trains are absolutely PACKED during the morning and afternoon commutes. Imagine the crowds from multiple trains coming and going each hour!
Installed circa 1990?
DAMN! These escalators are like riding on a mill with all the noise they have! You need to wear earplugs on them!!!
Yeah really. It's very loud!
I 2nd that-and I’ve only now seen these here on YT! Gotta B deafening LIVE!!!
I went up this thing when I was in New York and it was scary
Well, this isn't in NY
These beat the 5 story TKs at DEN airport. How many stories?
18 I think.
ExcelElevations 4U I have fam in Denver and I've been on those Escalators
It's also the station with the slowest elevator
Yeah… that thing is ridiculously slow
Those are very long escalators!
It’s insane how long they are.
Cool.
But it needs a dash of oil to quiet it down and speed it up!
I could agree with both!
I got on this after smoking a Jay going down I didn't know they was so steep.... I had an whole panic attack I had to sit on the steps down .😫 it was scary Whole heart attack is what these are.... felt like forever going down
That's when you ride the elevator down haha.
Damn, i thought the 7 line at 34th street station in NYC escalator was long.
I've never been there, but maybe someday :)
It's supposedly half the size of this one but hudson's it sure seems steeper non the less!
Why is this giving me deja vu?
Have you ridden them before?
@@stlelevators maybe
Sometimes I walked up for some exercise. Other times I pulled out a book to read.
Both are good ways to use the escalators 😂
anyone knows why not lifts???
Mon Dieu, je ne pourrai jamais monter dessus 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
from which floor to which floor?
Goes from the station platform to the surface
So this is where they shot Heavenly Kid.
Oh really?
I've been there many times
Cool! It takes forever to go from one end to the other though.
@@stlelevators I know right after I go up my legs start hurting
Where is this?
It says in the title
* 3 weeks later* (spongebob guy voice)
It feels like it! They are so slow!
For once I'm using the "xxx brought me here" trope 'cause he deserves it: Nate Seltzer brought me here.
Is he seltzer?
@@Thatoneguy-uc9jq I'm not sure what you mean by this question.
@@bodenlosedosenhose1590 is he a seltzer drink?
@@Thatoneguy-uc9jq Or, so I did understand what you meant. Well, since he's a human, and humans are made of up to 60% water, I'd say... sure. Why not?
those are stretch escalators.
So long escalators and stairs
It just needs a massive slide down the middle.
Ok, that would be amazing 😂
At that steep of an angle, a slide that long would end up yeeting you right into the wall and/or bowling over unsuspecting commuters in your path!
It would be a helluva ride, though. 😈
Again, 7000 series trains are not "really boring". Yeah in your mind they might be less interesting than the older ones but they do not deserve that tag.
Why would they build the station so deep?
Probably noise reasons
Because it’s DC and it was built during the Cold War. The system doubles as a fallout shelter.
Definitely the deepest system I’ve been on.
@@stlelevators its because the rock ground structure
🍀 Oh hellllll no!
I’m getting a heart attack just looking at it
It's not THAT bad lol
@@stlelevators my fear of heights escalators elevators etc says otherwise
Imagine falling asleep on that
Good luck, it’s really loud 😂
Reminds me of Moscow metro
Isn't that where the longest escalators are?
Rosslyn’s is a nightmare
I haven’t been on those before.
@@stlelevators Man if you look up it feels like it would never end
Notice how there is an up escalator instead of stairs in the middle I wonder why. My only thought is because they are so long and nobody should want to take the stairs so they put and escalator instead if
They probably reverse the direction depending on how busy it is. For instance, they might run it down in the morning.
Makes Sense
@@stlelevators That would make sense-I grew up in the DC area and know the Metrorail better than the roads in DC (well, the Green, Orange, and Red Lines, anyway), so I can tell you from experience that that’s why. The stations would have more than one “down” escalator in operation during the morning commute and vice versa in the afternoon due to the crowds. Those trains are absolutely PACKED during the rush hour, and they need to keep the commuters moving in and out safely.
Wouldn’t skydiving be much much quicker
No, not much these escalators. That said quick escalator is could be killer motoring, passengers going be crushed!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 stop
Anyone here after that insta post DC? Lol
Imagine riding it and then it malfunctions
Then it's time to walk!
What brand are they?
Westinghouse
The Ireland boys did the mattress slide on those escalators! czcams.com/video/lp1bY4s1rZk/video.html

@@stlelevators wait you saw the video?
WHY ARE ESCALATORS KNOWN AS MONSTERS?
WHY ARE ESCALATORS SO MASSIVE, AND TALLER THAN THE REGULAR STAIRS?
this is my nightmare
At least there’s an elevator!
Easier going down that going up, but that's a horrible sound.
Wow it’s slow as hecc
yeah... so is the elevator
anyone here after afraid dog video???
Afraid dog video?
That is a long escalator
Some of the longest in the world.
