    Audiologist here! The phenomenon when your ear randomly rings for a few seconds and your hearing drops, then the ringing fades and the hearing returns- that is “transient auditory dysfunction” and is normal! Happens in a significant % of normal hearing people as well as those with hearing loss. Basically a “misfire” in the hearing nerve for a second.
    Tinnitus is when ringing (buzzing/crickets, sizzling - can have many sounds) in the ears lasts for more than 5 minutes at a time and happens more often than once a week.

      Second this! Thich Nhat Hanh has even offered some pointers on driving meditation in particular. Personally, I'm an advocate for zen dish-washing :]

    Regarding sleeping habits: y'all won't believe me but I actually fall asleep listening to BuzzFeed Unsolved marathons😂😂 something about Ryan's narration voice is so calming.
    I did, however, once wake up to the exorcism episode and so I now have trust issues.

    Some tips for Steven from a fellow insomniac that sometimes work and sometimes don't, but might as well give them a shot:
    1) When my insomnia is due to anxiety and my brain just won't stop, like someone flipping through channels, or sometimes I'll get fixated on a a specific song lyric for some reason - Counting backwards from 200 (or whatever arbitrary number you might like) can help slow down my brain. I've found counting backwards requires more brain power than counting up. It doesn't always work, but it sometimes it does.
    2) If you lay down and you are just tossing and turning, get up and walk around a little. I've found that just laying in bed will trap me in a restless cycle that lasts all night long.
    3) Try reading an actual physical book if you can't sleep. Staying away from screens but using your eyes and brains can tire you out (in my experience).
    4) Make sure you are getting enough sun (which I assume is fairly easy in CA) because that can help reset your natural melatonin production. Also, eating things like bananas (magnesium) and pistachios, tart cherries (melatonin) or milk in the hour before bed can help you feel sleepy. (I took melatonin gummies for a very long time and didn't like feeling dependent on them).
    5) I absolutely cannot sleep in a still, silent room and find that it puts me on edge. I find sleeping with a fan on for the white noise helps soothe that and also keeps me asleep.

      To add to this, sometimes it's a health thing. If you can afford it, ask your doc to do bloodwork for thyroid issues.
      It's not for everyone but if you've tried what feels like everything to go to sleep and have it be a restful sleep, give that a go. The thyroid gland can really screw with your body's ability to regulate hormones.
      This btw is an issue that has MANY MANY symptoms that don't happen all at once but if you're curious look up hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism symptoms and that could help. Insomnia is extremely common.

      I J turn it and then dare and/or demand my brain to relax and sleep. It seems to take away the power of the insomnia and the intense desire for sleep. 🤷‍♀️. Oops, I meant the opposite: I demand it to stay awake and alert ‼️

    Idk if Steven has ADHD but I do and when he said at 8:43 "When I'm tired, it's 5 am. I don't get tired but I'm always tired... I get wide awake at 1 am" I relate so hard! He should look into delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS) which is common in those with ADHD and is "a disorder in which a person's sleep is delayed by two hours or more beyond what is considered an acceptable or conventional bedtime. The delayed sleep then causes difficulty in being able to wake up at the desired time." And Steven talked about how he struggled to get up in the morning too.
    I honestly haven't found many solutions for this, I'm still searching lol. But, taking melatonin and smokin indica before bed have both proven to be helpful! If I can't do either then I'm likely to be tossing and turning until 5/6 am when I actually get sleepy too.

      I have adhd and this is absolutely true. I've been nocturnal since I was a kid which was a big problem in school. Lately I've been falling asleep at some point between 7am-9am and getting up at 5 pm (being disabled I don't have work which doesn't help with the sleep schedule thing)

      As someone with adhd, I fully believe that Steven has a form of it. I totally relate to him on so many issues he talks about having as well as what you can see in his personality. You can tell how sometimes he trails off on a subject and forgets where he was going with it and then goes on to a different subject. And he also steps over his own words because you can tell his brain is going faster than his mouth can go. He’s also an idea guy. He’s extremely creative and comes up with great ideas for shows, story lines, situations for the shows, etc.,.
      He has a lot of markers for it, I can’t remember if he’s ever mentioned having it. It feels like he has, but it may just be me misremembering because he does have a bunch of signs of it.

    Hey Steven! I have narcolepsy but it still causes difficulty to fall asleep some nights. I’ve seen a sleep therapist, and she recommended, along with the usual no caffeine after 3pm + daily exercise, to try “running from bears” for at least 15 seconds every day. By that, she means sprint as fast as you can because our bodies are to be chased/chasing wild animals like in the caveman days. It helps to get that energy out of your system.
    When I need to fall asleep, I usually either listen to a podcast called Sleep with Me (a guy rambles on for like an hour), put on a sleep hypnosis video (you can find plenty on CZcams), or watch those hypnotic antique restorations at low volume (my faves are “my mechanics” and “mister patina”). And remember not to worry about falling asleep, or else you’ll keep yourself up with your anxiety. If all else fails, lie as still as you can in the dark with your eyes closed. Even if you don’t fall asleep, studies show that your brain will still be getting some of the benefits that sleep provides just by pretending.

    I don't turn my brain off, I make up stories / think about stories or plan things in detail like how i'm getting ready (wake up, get out of bed, let dog out, get drink, let dog in, ect)

    "Relying" on something to go to sleep actually helps create a trigger in the brain. Yes it can be a type of addiction, but having a trigger is like having a "button" that says, 'ok it's time to sleep'. Mine has been weed for over 15 years. But it's wonderful to sleep for 7 hours straight. 🎉

    Hey, Steven! I have ADHD and had sleep problems growing up. Something that helped me immensely was when Mythbusters had an episode where they found that just closing your eyes and relaxing was helped your body like falling asleep. It was the deadliest catch crossover and that removed so much anxiety that I had where I would try to sleep but the anxiety I was unable to sleep would keep me from sleeping.

      THIS! it helped me so much, especially in college. Just knowing that lying there was partial credit usually eased my anxiety enough to start falling asleep for real.

    Shane’s right, you can practice mindfulness almost anywhere. There’s guided mindfulness practices that are specifically for commuting! You don’t need to close your eyes for every meditation ☺️

    Steven, you can now do sleep studies at home. They have you take home a monitoring device and you can sleep in your own bed. Then you take the equipment back and they analyze the data. I am supposed to do this soon. Many years ago I did it at the site, and it took me soooooo long to fall asleep, so I decided to opt for the home study. I hope it helps!

    Hey Steven, I recently got diagnosed with ADHD and discovered it was responsible for my own sleep issues. I'm always wide awake at night, can't sleep at a decent hour, brain going a million miles a minute until the wee hours. So I never get enough sleep on the weekdays and then have to crash and sleep til noon on weekends. So idk if that could be a possibility for you, but doesn't hurt to think about it.

    Speaking of app streaks, I very very briefly used an app to track my cycle and then abandoned it, and every once in awhile I'll get an email that's like "your period is 508 day(s) late!!"

    Another tip for Steven, that still works for me is, I practiced autogenic training. It is a form of meditation where you find some mind-place that really calms you down and train to focus all your thoughts there. It works wonders on my over-thinking autistic brain.

      I've tried this a couple times when I need to slow down my brain! My go to is walking around the town I grew up in. I think just focusing on a place I'm really familiar with has helped when I can't stop overthinking.

    i’ve always loved sports and games in general, i think a big part of it is that i’m just a competitive person but the reason why i love sports (especially baseball) so much is the community aspect of it and the connection you feel to other fans. it’s a really cool feeling when everyone around you is rooting for the same thing and you’re experiencing the same collective emotions ya know

    I’ve had insomnia for a long time and what helps me is having a really specific routine before bed. Take a shower, read or journal a little, have a snack, listen to a relaxing music you only listen to at this time, and then go to bed. After a while the specific steps in the specific order will alert your brain that bedtime is approaching and your brain has time to prepare itself. It’s basically like Pavlov-ing yourself haha

    Ryan's binder idea made me think in my swatch diary with all the fabrics I've used on my sewing with notes about them and small notes about what's happening around my life, as a strange diary. Funniest thing, next thing I knew, my cousin recommended to me a book about a historian following up a Victorian lady through her fabric swatches diary.

    i think shane's love for thanksgiving food is his slavic heritage talking. some of the things americans describe as "thanksgiving food" make me think of the food i literally like... ate at the canteen at school, my mother regularly made, etc back home. (obviously slavic food isn't a monolith etc etc but there is an overlap and the general vibe is definitely there).

    I used to struggle a lot with sleep too. So much so that I started having those horrible OCD rituals, like drinking tea before bed, and if I didn't, FREAKING OUT abt it, watching the same show every night, checking if I had eyebags or looked tired enough in the mirror, etc.
    honestly, the only thing that really helped me was exercising and going to a psychiatrist. After finally taking anxiety meds I started to finally relax and be able to fall asleep. In my case, my fear of not being able to sleep caused my insomnia.
    I'm NOT saying that this is Steven's case or that this will help every insomniac, bc obviously that's not true. But what I do recommend is for you to go to the doctor first.
    Also, try to create a healthy bedtime routine, I've seen that that helps my body relax.

    hey steven, sufferer of DSPS and former diagnosed insomniac here - different things work for different people! I also use an eye mask, foam ear plugs (you might not realise how much small noises are affecting your sleep), and it might help to try sleeping alone - especially if your bed partner is disruptive.
    Melatonin or sleepy tea works for some very well (does nothing for me personally), and to start getting in a better sleep schedule (just for a little while) prescribed sleep medication can help - it helps me reset my DSPS cycle without using it every night. Meditation and exercise can of course be helpful to some as well - though neither does anything for me 😂 Sleep is very personal and not always easy to help, but I wish you the best of luck!

    A sleep study is done in a bed. But, you are hooked up to wires and monitors which can make it difficult to fall asleep. Sometimes, they send you home with the wires and you can sleep in your own bed.

    Okay, but same Steven. I have issues falling asleep anyways, but on days that I work out (and I usually work out in the morning) I have a harder time falling asleep than on days that I don't work out.

    To help me sleep, I like to write journal entry style before bed.
    And I’ve also found that creating a routine/ rituals (white noise, checking on my plants, etc., etc.) around getting ready for bed really helps me wind down.

    My advice: I have always had problems sleeping - I agree with Shane. Just stay up and stay busy until you get tired. Brown noise/fan, weighted blankets, and blackout curtains help too!

    Having a strange circadian rhythm or sleep disorders is common in the ✨neurodiverse community✨. So it might truly be genetic and no amount of "sleep hygiene" will help, especially if your sleep cycle involves waking up multiple times during the night.
    There are non-addictive medicines a doctor can prescribe or over the counter supplements you can try that will help you sleep through the night, so even if your body decides it's time to wake up at 1am, you'll stay asleep or fall back asleep quickly. L-theanine worked better than melatonin for me.

      Note: Stimulants for people with ADHD tend to not be addictive in an emotional sense- common misconception. Some people develop a tolerance from taking them for years

      I came here to talk about circadian rhythm disorders. I have one, and there's not currently a prescription that works for me. In 41 and have been dealing with DSPD since I was a teen (or earlier). Best to see a specialist to know exactly what's the cause though.

    Steven! I’m the same way with sleep. I generally fall asleep between 3-5am and it’s super restless. I tried every OTC sleep thing I could find and nothing ever worked. I finally broke down and went to a psychiatrist and explained what I was going through and I got prescribed sleeping meds. I was really hesitant at first because I was afraid of being groggy in the morning or becoming dependent on them. What ended up happening is I slept. When I take them I always sleep for 8 hours or more if I can sleep in. Let me tell you, sleeping with medication is way better than “sleeping” without. It’s definitely worth seeing a psychiatrist about. You won’t need to do a sleep clinic thing, that’s only for if you have sleep apnea or something in that realm. Another great positive of taking my sleeping meds is I’m way less dependent on caffeine because I actually feel well rested. It can be a stressful journey to find the right medicine, but it’s SO worth it.

      Yeah I cannot relate. I’m on 3 different meds for anxiety and one doubles as anxiety and depression med and one is for sleep. so I’m drowsy all the time. I haven’t had the time (or energy lmao) to talk to my doctor about different options. So I’m drinking coffee and redbulls throughout the day. But on the bright side I can’t have anxiety if I’m drowsy all day

      @@Satanhadapointhave you been tested for ADHD? A lot of people’s anxiety and depression lowers after being diagnosed. Anxiety about failing to do or remember something, or about needing to do something, followed by depression about not doing the things and feeling like a failure. For some reason, I had anxiety about making phone calls outside of work, and it largely went away after adhd meds. Plenty of other anxiety that is better managed when I can better manage my life, which my meds help me do. I’m super vocal about it cuz I suffered for 37 years before getting diagnosed and it’s blown my mind.

    I struggled to sleep for 25 years, have never been able to nap. for a while I would have wine on weekends to sleep, and try to catch up on sleep debt. But now I take 10mg melatonin an hour before sleep, usually people take 3-5mg, And I have to be unplugged from video games or shows, Pinterest soothes me. The best thing that has helped the thoughts at night is a rain sound machine, a huge game changer! I still don’t stay the sleep the best but it’s better, best sleep is always 5-9am

    For people like Shane that think they don't like sweet potatoes/yams, I would suggest that maybe you just don't like how they're prepared for Thanksgiving traditionally. For me, I never liked the glazed yams or sweet potato casseroles because it felt like too much sweetness - the vegetable is already sweet, it doesn't need more sugar. Try preparing it savory - you can bake a yam or sweet potato just like a regular potato. I like to serve it with just butter, salt, and sage - sage pairs SO well with that flavor. I eat sweet potatoes all the time now.

    @steven I always had issues sleeping and then I bought a soft Bluetooth headband that I use with pink noise or brown noise and it drowns out the craziness in my head enough for me to sleep. It has saved me!

    Actually, there are healthy hot chocolates that are a replacement for your morning coffee. They're often like a mushroom (like Chagall or cordyceps) hot chocolate or you can make like a cocoa tea.

    I am a horrendous sleeper. Trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, tired all day. I found a routine to basically put myself in a relaxed trance absent of my own thoughts and that's helped immensely. I will listen to an audiobook or old timey radio show that's juuust interesting enough to hold my attention and play a repetitive relaxing game on my phone at the same time. Keeps my hands busy and my brain busy but at a low enough level to trick me into falling asleep.

    I know it’s a bit late to weigh in but Steven I can relate to your sleep situation: I believe you have an inversed circadian rhythm, and possibly insomnia. What that means is you are perpetually fighting against your natural sleep cycle if you’re attempting to hold first or second shift hours, as your body naturally wants third shift hours, and that struggle can be confused with insomnia. If you’re able to correct it with something as simple as an eye mask TAKE THE WIN.

    Sleep is so important that the cost/benefit of something like a tea or routine is worth it even if it's not what you expected. Do whatever works that isn't actively harmful. And talk to your doc.

    okay steven have i got some sleep tricks for you from a lifelong insomniac. so something to has helped me the most with turning my brain off is actually listening to podcasts at night bc then my brain has something to focus on and isn’t racing. also it sounds silly but if you’re laying there with your eyes shut convince yourself that you’re not going to sleep, that you’re just resting your eyes. sounds weird but it works sometimes

    For sleeping when your mind is on overdrive, I use movies or audiobooks, something I’m super familiar with all the words of. Hearing the words kind of locks in just enough attention that I can switch off. 🌼 Good luck!

    I didn’t used to have trouble sleeping but late college I started having trouble and the pandemic made it worse. What I do is put some sleepy time essential oils that I get from whole foods on my pillow and put some rain sounds or calming music on, I wear an eye mask, and I also have a memory foam pillow and mattress padding to just try and relax as much as I can. It sounds like A LOT but it got that bad for me, and it works

    Hi Steven, I usually watch videos on youtube with tips and coping tools to help. Some things that work for me are breathing exercises before bed, paired muscle relaxation, not drinking caffeine after 3pm, having a colder room. I read to fall asleep it helps to have the room be a few degrees colder than you have it in the day. There are mindfulness exercises that might help. And thought diffusion. All of these have videos on youtube that can show you how to do them. I also listen to rain sounds or ocean sounds.

    Stephen, definitely go to a sleep specialist. I'm curious if you've ever had sleep attacks and just weren't aware of them? You can fall asleep randomly so quickly and wake back up so quickly and nobody would even notice if they weren't looking for it. I didn't know I had them for years. Also, the fragmented sleep you described ..that's also a part of it.

    i fall asleep by listening to something. usually watcher content actually lol. listening and focusing on something else helps me relax and not fixate on my own thoughts. i recommend an audiobook : )

    Steven, if you find you're being very awake in the middle of the night, try doing something to use that energy. Get some work done or do some exercising before trying to go back to sleep.
    Instead of thinking about it like "I'm going to get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep now." Think of it more like "I'm going to take a quick nap, wake up, do something, grab a midnight snack, and another nap before sunrise."
    It helps take the pressure of of feeling like you HAVE to fall asleep. And as long as you get 8 hours, does it matter if it's 8 straight?

    I meditate while I drive. I beg to drive on family road trips because I literally can block out ANYthing going on in the vehicle.
    If I’m in the passenger seat, I can’t relax. The kids always need something or I’m stressed about road conditions and planning bathroom breaks etc.
    When I drive, I look my husband in the eyes and say, “ok. Ur responsible for the kids while I’m driving.”

    I have narcolepsy, Type 2 to be exact. it sounds great to many, but it freaking sucks and I don't have the "worst" symptoms (such as cataplexy, which type 1 has), we are always tired even though we sleep a lot sometimes. I found out I had something when I fell asleep while driving once...and I pushed to get a referral to the sleep doctor. After the tests, I found out that I go into REM in 2 minutes on average. During the tests, you sleep on a BED. Yes, there's a bunch of cables on you and there are 2 tests; 1) the test where you fall asleep during the night and the techs are watching you from a camera, 2) you need to take 5 naps during the day (they come and tell you: "try and take a nap"). I fell asleep on all of them and 1 of those I dreamt that I was TRYING to fall asleep (I basically thought I didn't fall asleep). AND YOU STILL FEEL TIRED
    I can't have pillow talk with my husband for too long, I can't play some video games unless I took my medications (I get dizzy because I'm pushing myself to enjoy the game longer and then I have to fall asleep for double the time I played to recuperate). It took so long to find the right meds for me, and you realize that you feel a certain way when you are gonna crash. I have good and bad days, and when its bad I have to sleep A LOT. Sick? I might sleep all day even with a tiny flu. I have a prescribed nap too!!
    If I could give people sleep, I would gladly transfer some of mine so it would even out... cause I would like to enjoy some things without having someone worry because they noticed I'm pushing myself so much so I can be apart of something that I really want to be apart of. I've fallen asleep while dancing!! and that was before I knew what I had and before it got worse, cause it seems like it does.
    Curious info: people with narcolepsy can't have insomnia too!

    Sleep studies can be done at home. Usually, it's for sleep apnea, though, not insomnia. Give it a shot though.

    Steven, I'm also a night owl and have suffered through insomnia, so I can suggest things I do. Limit access to technology & screentime - don't use it at least an hour before bed. Don't bring work home or do anything worked related. Journal before bed to write about your day, your worries, and to do list for the next day. Then read a book until your eyes get heavy. Do box breathing while you're laying down to sleep. If you can't or aren't sure how, then follow a guided meditation because they usually have you do breathing exercises.

    Sleep is the funniest subject to talk about because I couldn't sleep and I've started playing ghost files to fall asleep to, but I did the podcast instead. I fell asleep before I even heard any of the discussion of sleep lol

    I always have white noise in my room, i like the rainymood app. Something that helps, as i've always had anxiety, my mom used to tell me that just resting is enough. Laying down with my eyes closed and just focusing on my breathing or white noise and thinking it's ok if i dont sleep usually gets me to sleep. the idea of just resting is enough takes the pressure off trying to sleep, at least for me.I also have blackout curtains and a weighted blanket. Sleeping got easier with both of those.

    I’ve done sleep studies before. The first one I did was at home with a halter-like monitor that had some electrodes attached to it. I found it too uncomfortable. The second sleep study I did was at the facility which was located in a hotel. They hooked me up to some monitoring stuff and I slept in a comfy bed at the hotel, not on a table. I ended up being diagnosed with sleep apnea.
    Shane is correct about having a good routine before bed. It’s considered good sleep hygiene to only get in bed for the purpose of sleeping. If it takes more than 20 minutes to fall asleep, they recommend you get out of bed and go do something like read a book on the couch. Basically do something that is not in your bed. It’s also good to try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day. They also recommend limiting screen time before bed so you stop using your phone or watching TV like an hour before going to bed.

    I'm late to the party, but Steven should definitely do a sleep study. I had one done a few years ago and was formally diagnosed with insomnia. It was a weird experience, but it's good to get answers.

    I have struggled with sleep for years I have tried everything. I also cannot nap, my brain doesn’t shut down long enough to nap. lol
    I have tried medication with doctors, but the only thing that has actually helped me is setting myself to the sun.
    I saw a video to try it and I thought why the heck not nothing else has worked. I started by making sure I get out of bed and actively watch the sunrise. Then at night actively watch the sunset. That became a routine and then I began laying down after I watched the sunset. After about 2-3 weeks of consistent practice of this my body just started to set itself with the sun.
    I have not had better sleep in my life EVER. It takes commitment and time to get acclimated but it might be worth a shot for you.
    Cause I have tried everything and this was finally what helped.

    How to sleep for Stephen: maybe the anxiety of of trying to sleep makes it harder to sleep. Get a routine. After 5 no ‘bright white lights’ go down to as few lights as you can stand. Make sure your phone is on its lowest setting. I’m talking from 5 pm on, try to survive on 1 - 60 watt warm bulb next to you by the couch. Make sure your tv isn’t on dynamic lighting. Have a hot shower or bath before bed. The temperature difference is also supposed to trigger sleep. Find something you like listening to but also calm enough you can fall asleep to. Listen to like someone read Sherlock Holmes stories on CZcams (listen, do not look at phone, turn it down facing the bed so there’s no light from the phone after 10 pm). Make sure CZcams is not on auto play or that what you choose turns off after an hour. No liquids two hours before 10pm. Quit caffeine. It can take a month to get used to. You can taper off by switching to decaf. Drink a ton of decaf until you get used to it. Takes about a month. No decaf after 11 am. Set an alarm every morning. The second you wake up to the alarm, you must be instantly vertical. Vertical is critical. No lying in bed. Turn on every light in the house. Bonus points if you take a ten minute walk outside without sunglasses when the sun is out as soon as you wake up. Bonus bonus points if you can get your heart rate going as soon as possible. Phone on full brightness in the morning. Computer full brightness in the morning. It’s a lot of stuff to do but it worked for me. Also helped my anxiety.

    Just came here to ask Steven if he has every tried just going with his natural sleep schedule, like fuck it, for a couple of weeks, go to sleep when you're tired at 12pm and wake up at 1am or whatever it is your body needs. If you have some time off or fuck it, you own your own business! Just schedule your work like that for a few weeks and see how well you sleep then. Might be a worthwhile experiment?

    I think meditation might actually be really helpful to all of you! For Ryan, there are tons of guided meditation videos on youtube (that don't keep your streak active lol), for Steven there's "wind downs" on headspace that I love (progressive muscle relaxation is a miracle), and I think Shane would love walking meditation! My dad is a buddhist and has been meditating for ages; it definitely helps with his (and my) insomnia, anxiety, and general well being!
