How to ACE Your Next Behavioral Interview (don't use STAR)!

- STAR vs. CARL: What's the best behavioral interview method? In this video I compare the popular STAR answer method with the more comprehensive CARL answer format, share sample behavioral interview questions and answers, and end with a recommendation on when to use each method.
The STAR behavioral interview method suffers from 2 limitations: (1) It allocates too much time for background information and not enough on your accomplishments, and (2) Doesn’t naturally incorporate your learnings as part of the answer prompts. Therefore, many interviewers find the STAR technique of interviewing a little bit robotic as candidates just seem to memorize answers and spit them out during the interview.
With the CARL interview method, the “L” stands for “Learning” so you should really allocate more time on reflecting what your actions and results meant for future use cases (i.e. what if you faced a similar situation again, what would you do next time?) This is where the CARL interview framework really shines.

Thanks for diving right in and not wasting 5 minutes talking about how great your method.
Hahaha no problem!
Great video and breakdown! I'm in the process of looking for a job after coming off a sabbatical, and I was really struggling with forming answers for behavioural questions (since it's also been years since I've interviewed). Your videos have really helped me structure my answers and understand what's important to highlight. Awesome channel Jeff!!
I love to hear this Julia! I hope you had a great time during the sabbatical and best of luck with the job search process 😁
Ty for this video! I just graduated from college and have been applying to jobs. I watched your resume and cover letter video and I have been getting interviews with the advice you've given. Thank you for these amazing tips!
Woohoooooo congrats! Let me know when you sign an offer 😁
You are wonderful. Thankfully I have started to prepare my word file with all the questions in advance. Now I only have to recheck the results part and ad learnings from it. THANKS
AWESOME. Best of luck Carla!
Great to the point as always. I always include the "Learning" part in almost all situations. So I guess I'm using STARL :D. Anyway, agree with your point that an answer should focus on forward thinking, not backward situation.
Thanks so much Andy! Ah that means you were doing it right all along! I wish I knew eariler as well. Hahaha STARL -> Not as catchy name though :P
this is the best channel ever
thanks! I think so too ;)
You're awesome Jeff. I appreciate all of your tips and videos.
No problem Morgan 😁
Jeff I am here because I passed my first round interview by applying your Tips "Tell me about yourself " Video. I am now preparing for the final round of interview and this will definitely help me again. Thank you very much
Woohoooo best of luck my friend!! Let me know how it goes 😁
I really appreciate your videos. I love them
I really appreciate you!
Thanks Jeff! Still relevant at this time and age.
That's what I love to hear 😁
Great video as always! I think you made some really good points there, especially when you pointed out how using the star method can seem robotic. Considering how widespread that method is, stories can really come off as scripted and generic given how often interviewers ask these behavioral questions. Thanks so much for sharing this with us! Always great to add to our “toolbox” as someone else commented :D
Yup! That insight actually came from a few recruiter friends of mine who were complaining (over lunch) about how so many candidates were basically reading off scripts on the phone and it was clear that they weren't being very natural. Very off-putting!
I used to be too scripted! Now I'm much better
Jeff thanks for your sharing! ❤️
You're welcome Arsyad!
Nice comparison. I generally use the STAR method, but definitely glad to see something else in my tool kit.
I did too up until I learned about this from a management consultant colleague of mine! It blew my mind, such a simple shift in mindset!
I like to use STARL now!
I prefer CARL method
Your advice is amazing. I'm going to use CARL!
Nice! Let me know how it goes my friend 😁
Great video Jeff! Spread the knowledge. :)
Thanks Jeremy!!!
I was more focused on background music😂 compared to your CARL method. I will definitely try CARL method in my upcoming interviews.
LOL I hope the content was still good 😁
thank you very much for your videos
You're very welcome!
Excellent video - to the point and easy to understand. I think I like CARL better and will be using it to prepare for my interview tomorrow!
Best of luck!
How'd your interview go?
Very useful
great video jeff!
Thank you my friend!
The CARL method is so much more clearer.
I agree! 😁
CARL is my new trick now
It's a very powerful tool to stand out! Most people I would say are still relying very heavily on the STAR method
@@JeffSu hahah I just saw STARL...not bad also
Hey Jeff, would love to learn more about your approach to editing these videos. Do you use any specific software/tools or people?
I summarized my workflow here: www.jeffsu.org/gear/
@@JeffSu Thanks so much for the reply, i looked at the page actually but couldn't find more info about your approach to editing videos (which are awesome btw) any recommendations around that?
@@jsabra1 Ali Abdaal's skillshare course for editing videos!
@@JeffSu Awesome dude, thanks! I didn't realise he was that popular! I'm genuinely curious though how do you manage to find time to produce / edit your videos being a full time job?
First ty referee jeff
Woohoo thanks for the support Pouestah!! 🙌🙌
So what would you recommend if asking for definitions like "What is your definition of teamwork?"
Give your answer and provide a meaningful example that backs it up :)
I thought i ask that...i get that question a lot in interviews. Thanks for the advice.
What about STARL ? ;)
That works too! Haha, as long as the answer doesn't become too long or sound too "scripted"
I use this now!
Is that kindom heart music in the background I'm hearing?
Nah I don't think so 😂
👍👍
Thanks Ali 😁!
I like par
Hahaha me too
Behavioral only suites in interview..
In someone's personal life this thing not related
.
wait what
Why not just do STARL?
An extra step...? 😂
@@JeffSu FYI I love your videos!!! I have an internal interview coming up next week and the recruiters kept mentioning STAR when I was asking for how they assess candidates. Having seen this video I thought the L will be something they don’t expect me to add.
@@mrgatsinzi awesome! Best of luck!!
use STARL
Or just CARL....
Video was great but don't put these background music. It really irritates and distract the main content.
Thanks for the feedback! 😁
That elevator-music during the video is not making your great content better 😢
Thanks for the feedback 😁
If renaming STAR makes you feel cool, so be it
It does 😂
