- A video discussion about the exhibition I Know You by Heart: Portrait Miniatures with curator
Johanna Mizgala and lead conservator Maria Bedynski.
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) holds over 100 portrait miniatures dating from the 17th to the 20th century. The portraits are primarily of Canadian subjects, including well-known figures from history and lesser-known or unknown individuals. Canadian artists represented in the collection include Horatio Walker, Gerald Sinclair Hayward and Juliette de Lavoye. A major conservation project on miniatures in LAC's collection was undertaken in 2007.
This travelling exhibition of 35 portrait miniatures highlights the intimate, personal nature of portrait miniatures by focusing on the reasons that such images are commissioned, created and carried.
I Know You by Heart is currently on display at the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John until December 31, 2012 and is scheduled for the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon in March 2013.

Very interesting. I very much enjoyed this. Do you have any miniatures by William Grimaldi? I descend from the Grimaldi family and am very knowledgable regarding his work. Thank you.
I have had 3 family members in my family who lived in the 19th century.
Correct me if I am wrong.....it would have only been the wealthy that could have afforded to have such miniatures, done? Am I correct?
