  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Story Location Tour & Filming Locations
John Hughes once referred to his classic 1986 film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" as his "love letter" to Chicago, which is kind of funny considering a lot of this film was shot in various areas around Los Angeles. I tracked down these locations as well as the several locations he used in Chicago.
Embark on a nostalgic journey through the beloved 80s classic, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," as we visit the unforgettable filming locations that captured the essence of this iconic movie. Join us as we step into Ferris' shoes and traverse the streets of Chicago, reliving the escapades of Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane.
Our adventure begins at the legendary Von Steuben Day Parade, where Ferris famously commandeered a float for his exhilarating rendition of "Twist and Shout." Feel the energy of the crowd and immerse yourself in the infectious joy of Ferris' impromptu performance.

Very thorough! I grew up in Northbrook and remember when the film crews filmed the street I grew up on in 85. All the kids were chasing the car that was driving while being filmed. My street was the one you filmed with the old lady who was swerving in front of Ferris’ dad. It’s Mallard Drive and within walking distance of Glenbrook north. It’s a day I won’t forget. My parent’s house is the first reddish house in the scene on the right side of the street. If you watch the whole scene and lookout the back window of the old lady’s car/Ferris’ dad’s car you can see kids following right before it cuts away. These are my neighbors.

The part where you talk about, Jeffrey Jones, soliciting teenagers, and saying that he’ll never work again or he becomes president made me laugh my ass off
As I keep watching the video it blows my mind that most of the places in the movie were filmed in LA more than Chicago

Northbrook was originally Shermerville. Noted on the John Hughes plaque The school you now see from the PAC steps at Glenbrook North is Maple School which is a junior high school. They built this new one right behind where the original stood

Man, I was really enjoying this until you started with the whole "Diversity" stuff. SMH.. Why can't you all understand that it's not the job of a film to showcase different types of people. It's the job of a filmmaker to tell a story and entertain. They have no responsibilities other than that. John Hughes wrote many things based on personal experiences. If all he knew was being around a certain group of people, why should he try to do anything differently? You guys kill me. 🤮

It was the fall of 1985 and I was driving up Lake Shore Drive, in Chicago, in my black Pontiac Trans Am on my way to my job in Lake Point Towers. As I approached the downtown area I noticed a red sports car with a person sitting upright behind the front seats. I passed it and then noticed a large cinema graphic camera on the ground, in the road way. All this faded into the back of my mind. The movie comes out in 1986, makes a full run in theaters (never had time to see it) then appears on HBO Sunday nights, then eventually starts airing in off hours. I am channel surfing on night and start watching it after it already started. I see the scene of the Ferrari traveling up the drive and flash back to that morning. I wait more months until the film is released on VHS and purchase a copy. If you stop it during the drive sequence, you can see my car in the shot. Do you think I’m owed any residuals?
