It was expecting to fight. And Emerald seemed to understand that. She released the giant balloon and sure enough, Jean Jacket took the bait and decided to fight the way most natural for it - by eating the interloper. It didn't end well.

Even though your explanation makes sense, I prefer to imagine that it's more of a lovecraftian entity. A cosmic drifter that shuts down electricity as a means of protecting itself from solar radiation during space travel. Its body is sealed so that it can withstand the vaccuum of space. Also the idea that it might not actually need to eat physical substances to live, but perhaps something else like pain or souls, ejecting everything it eats after a while. Working outside of known physics would help explain how it flies and could survive endlessly without physical food. The idea being that space is filled with monsters like this and we're lucky that we got a little one that wasn't particularly ambitious.

It's more so that eating that barb wire and getting presumably poked in its gullet from swallowing it irritated the beast enough that it felt the need to unfurl into that jellyfish form to look imposing towards its enemies. It already had a nasty time trying to expel a prop horse and other inedible solids like keys and a wheelchair, and presumably Antlers' camera equipment was effectively another pebble on its diet, so this was the last straw. The jellyfish transformation is more closer to an intimidation display; like a frilled lizard opening its frill when it wants to get rid of a provoker.

You have no idea how many comments ive seen calling Jean Jacket (the alien) a Floating Cloth, Farbic & unscary.
In my opinion i love it's design because Its Simple & easy to remember it's not a spaceship it's a living Creature & it Transformers/ "unfolds" to make itself look bigger to fight for its territory. It looks almost like a biblically accurate angel.
