The RX 6800 XT and RX 6950 XT have offered some of the best price to performance in rasterized 1440p gaming in 2023, and while the RTX 4070 launch has added its own interesting strengths and weaknesses to consider, in terms of raw rasterized frames per dollar the 6800XT and 6950XT are still king. Watch my other vids pitting them each head to head against the RTX 4070, but if you have decided to go with AMD, which of the two should you choose? Your cinclusion is based on an unrealistic use case where the gamer will use max setting at all times and RT is of utmost importance. You do always state that settings adjustment will make a large perf difference but state that it woukd be a compromise and sacrifice to not use max

    • @danielowentech

@@Viewer19 my conclusion is based on the 6950xt being 15% or less faster than the 6800xt, while costing more than 15% more money, which is still true when tested at lower settings and resolutions. When testing the relative performance of GPUs it is important to not be CPU limited, which would be more likely at lower settings, which is why GPU comparisons are usually done at the highest graphics settings. I mentioned in the video that the 4K results don't mean these GPUs can't be used at 4K, it just shows that they won't hit 60fps at max settings in the latest AAA games. Which is useful info for having realistic expectations.

FYI, there is something called a bathtub curve on electronics. Basically, if a product is used for a year or 2 and never had a single issue it is MORE likely that it will last another 10 years than an unopened brand new product. If you know what you're looking for, used or open box can be a far better choice.

When did become common that if your GPU doesn't run everything on Ultra on 4K, the game is an unoptimized shit? I get that people paid pretty money a year ago, 3070 for example, but truth be told, that GPU is not meant for 4K, especially not now in 2023. Here we are all "tech enthusiasts", and we know what to do to get a desired performance, but I hate this new trend, "my 3060ti can't run 120FPS what's wrong", that I see everywhere.

It’s crazy the government has its people so oppressed elsewhere they actually have to factor in the wattage of a component of their PC so the government doesn’t bend them over as hard. Thanks to that "new" prices you're starting to find RX 6800 and 6800 XT between 300 and 400 $ or €, new 6800 goes below 500 $/€ also sometimes, not as fast but it can have better FPS/price and good enough energy efficiency. Good enough for some 4k, very quality and FSR 1440p and fast 1080p both of them while getting even more than RTX 4070. Having to choose new, RTX 4070 altought not as good in some ratios is close enough and much more new technology. But better wait for deceiving 4060/ti and rx 7600 to see what performance are going to deliver at half the price (or not). Any 6800 XT used below 400$ is better value than anything is coming in following months for sure.

Power draw is often talked about, but for a person who's running a gaming PC a few hours a week, it's mostly a nothing burger as long as the GPU has a good cooler (power draw = heat). For folks like that, like me, performance is the key, not power draw. I'm talking about hardware performance, not software trickery. DLSS, FRS, and the like don't impress me.
During Black Friday 2022 I bought a 6800XT for my 13700K build -- at that time the 6950XT was around $300 more than the 6800XT. I play FF14 on a 144Hz 4K display with all the settings maxed, and on this system I get 95-110 FPS consistently with no stutters or glitches. Turning down the less critical settings yields 130-140FPS, so the 6800XT would still be the right choice for me even with the narrowed price gap. Had AMD given the 69xx cards a bit of a VRAM bump, say to 20GB, the 6950XT might be the better long-term option, but with the same buffer size as the 6800XT it offers no such advantage.

aw man, got 6800XT and 1440p monitor 2months ago but had to RMA the GPU 3 times due to faulty fans everytime(bad luck i guess) and now they can't replace the unit anymore so i would need to take money back or choose another one. another 6800xt for 630€ or 4070 for 610€ since it comes with diablo 4 which i want to play but the 12GB vram bothers me since i like to keep the gpu for atleast 5years unless something happens in the next 3 that makes me upgrade again although the low power draw on the 4070 is tempting even though electricity prices has gone down for now but might get up during the winter.
Now i'm stuck with 1060 6GB with 1440p monitor and don't know if i should wait amd to come out with new 7000 series cards or get 6800xt or 4070, i doon't knoow whaat to doo lol.
Would get 6950XT for 725€ but i would need to get another psu which would make it 850€-900€ and that's not worth it anymore.
Maybe i should just pick one and move on, there is always going to be better and i'm stressing too much about this haha.

All three videocards the 6800XT, 6950XT and the RTX 4070 do reasonably well against each other in the mid range. Depending on the use case, games that you actually play, and resolution, I could see an argument for any of the 3 video cards. Honestly, I would pick the 6800XT out of the 3. Contrary to popular believe, nvidia gpu owners do not become professional video editors , 3D graphics designers, and AI engineers overnight. During these tough times, I'm not sure how long I have to hold on to my videocard, so the 16gb vram is going to have to do for an extended period of time. For people who require Cuda and maybe play at 1440p, the 4070 is probably the most attractive card since the GTX 1070. It sucks that's it's about 100 dollars overpriced, but it's the best bone you've got until nvidia throws another one.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism Před rokem +3

I think the 6800 XT is ultimately going to prove to be a better value than the 4070 for most users, as long as the difference in power consumption isn't a significant issue. The Vram advantage is going to end up being more important than any of the advantages which come with Nvidia hardware. The fact that software ray tracing in UE5 runs faster than hardware ray tracing, and works just as well on AMD hardware, is also a big deal, because that's the most likely type of ray tracing to be actually worth using with either GPU at this performance tier anyway.
If your electricity costs are really high, then I can see how a 4070 could potentially provide better value over a 3 or 4 year period.

16 gb isnt gonna make your gpu last longer than a 12gb. Youre focusing on the micro too much and not looking at the macro. If we were talking about the 4090 with 12gb then yes, 1000 percent 12gb is not enough for that card. Id go as far and say 16 gb that card would realistically be fine though but when youre spending titan money you should be getting titan memory, a 4090 is a great productivity card. The issue is going to held back over time by it just not being fast enough. By the time 16gb becomes necessary at 1440p, youre gonna need to use medium settings anyway. I got news for you, if youre running medium settings, you wont be using more than 12gb of vram. Cranking settings up to ultra(which you will barely notice over high) at 1440p and turn everything else to medium your vram usage is still gonna be cut down by a LOT. a 4070 will be able to do the same thing mean while, except it actually has a good looking upscaler at 1440p and probably a way better and more improved frame generation. You can say maybe it will last longer natively at 4K. Sure. Youre already using High/Medium at 4K and neither GPU is a good buy for 4K. No card is a good buy for 4K except a 4090. The 4080 and 7900XTX can do it but still need to lower settings in a few games and have no legs at 4K. You can settle for DLSS or hope its a game where FSR looks good at 4K quality in but yeah, natively those are just “ok enough”. Theyre so fast at 1440p that theyre pointless over the cards under them while being so expensive for being as slow as they are for 4K that you shouldve just bought a 4090, the only card that has EVER been good at 4K and i will die on this hill. Every other card till now used at 4K and said to be good for it was really just a glorified high refresh rate 1440p card that people settled on using for 4K.
Long story short cause im rambling,16gb on a 6800XT wont save it from being just as obsolete for being slow as 12 on a 4070. Natively theyre both gonna just as obsolete and around the same time and the 16gb of ram wont change that unless you really wanna play with max settings at 1440p at around 25-40 fps which just sounds horrible anyway and you should just use medium settings. Also lets be real if youre buying an 80 class now youre prob not gonna settle for medium settings and will upgrade 3-4 years atleast

Sure. There less powerful card might give you more frames per dollar, but if those frames are under 60fps at the resolution you want to play at, then it kinda doesn't matter. I think it is worth paying a slight premium to get 60+ fps at 1440p rather than save $100 and only get 48fps at 1440p or have to scale back to 1080p.

For some reason people in 2023 tend to analyze using either 6800XT or straight up 6950 (which is technically the slightly factory overclocked 6900), but almost never include 6900. Got the rx6950xt for 560 brand new and a 7700x 1440p is light work 4k surly would be possible if it made sense. I think 1440p is the best resolution 4k isn't much better 😊

Thanks for this very interesting piece.
The big question that bugs me (and I haven't seen anyone address) is: What about running cost?
If the 6950XT (TDP 335W) costs me $10 a month more to run than the 6800XT (TDP 250W), that changes the equation.
However, I'm sure that you can't use TDP to estimate power usage. I'd love to know your thoughts.

Can’t tell you about those cards specifically but I know my odyssey G5 at 1440p at 75-80fps (24w- 46w with hdr) and series x use 130w while playing halo infinite. (I have a secial plug)
At £0.32790p (33p) per Kw/h costs me about 5p per hour. For 150w combined or so.
Goes over 200w if I use 4k resolution with hdr.
      Series x PSU is 315w.
Gets more expensive again if you have oled screen.

I would buy a used pc from marketplace but every pc listed for 5-700 dollars comes with a 1660/1060/580 and those are just about worthless now. People are rediculous.

US prices for AMD are always good, but in Europe situation is different.
    For example in UK
    6800 £478
    6800XT £539
    6950XT £629
    RTX 4070 £559
No wonder Nvidia i selling much better.
6800XT should cost £60-100 less to make any sense to buy.
6700XT is good value at £350
    7900XT also good at £750

Edit: So what I said below is flat out wrong. The comments below are rightly corrected me. By every indication the ASRock Phantom gaming is a good card that might have coil whine like any other.
I recently went with the 6950xt to give myself a-little head room in the future. Also when he says “it has gone as low as $600” he’s talking about the as rock power color card… which is less than ideal.

So asrock and powercolor are different manufacturers. The ASRock that went on sale is the phantoms gaming which actually performs pretty well thermally but it doesn't come with the GPU support bracket that the merc does

Something doesn't seem quite right with these benchmarks, going from the 6800-6950. These benchmarks would make more since if it were 6900xt vs 6950xt because with such a tiny difference in these benchmarks I'm not sure where the 6900xt would even fit in between .

I just bought the 6950 for 60 dollars more than the 6800 (80 if you count the taxes for my country), so it was worth it. Did the math and it´s 11% more money, so it was TOTALLY worth it.

Hi! In Germany (and some other Eu countries) 6800 XT costs 569€, while 6950 XT costs 658€ (today's prices from pcpartpicker), so the choice could lean a little closer to 6950 XT. (~15.6% more expensive in the Eu vs ~23.5% in the US).

I.e the game rust which is unoptimized to hell sees a 35% performance bump going from 5800x to 5800x3d. Going from a 6800xt to a 6950xt on the gpu thought would only be like 12%.

As good as the 6950 XT is, the 6800 XT for 500 is at least as good of a deal. Forget about how much each card cost originally at MSRP, that should have zero bearing on how you assess the relative value of the cards to you.
I saw too many people arguing that the 4070 ti was a good deal on the grounds that "it's as fast as a 3090 ti for only 800".
