Recent Peavey convert here…I was playing my Sire P7 at a revival and brother pulled out a never modded ‘92 Cirrus 6 and blew everything I thought I knew out the water!
What can I say- love this guy. I can hear the Sanford&Son tune constantly in the background. Peavey is the versatile work horse, and such great value for money. Mike Porcaro toured with one, enough said. Ken Smith...well, you do pay for the extra edge, and it's worth every penny.
Johnny, you showed your viewers that you have great taste in bass guitars - but if that's your car - you just showed us that you ALSO have great taste in vintage American-made cars. BRAVO!
I liked the Peavey Cirrus better until the he turned the Ken Smith bass knob up. Everything changed with the bass maxed out! Wow!!! I would love to get a Ken Smith bass. I have a Cirrus and like it a lot.
That modern sound is solely based on the soapbar placement (mostly humbuckers), distance to the bridge and the dimension from one pickup to the other one....the subtle distances come down to wood species and the quality of these.. and of course the preamp. The tone is very similar BUT the Smith sounds a bit "cleaner" and less "overtones", I think because of the quality of the components....
Great video!!!! Your playing is amazing!! Johnny, what do think of the Peavey Grind, i own one and love it! I know a lot of people say it is a poor man's Cirrus but i still love it! I'm very curious if you have ever played one? Blessings❤
Great presentation/comparison,why only 3k views?!Love that Boatail!(Riviera).Almost bought one for $800 back in the mid 80's,but I didn't wanna have to feed that 455c.i.!!haha!For most of us,Mimic is good enough!+you don't wanna be using a Smith for small gigs! The tone difference was too small for my ears,The Smith sounded like my Status Series II(Walnut wings).I Don't see a lot of Smith's in Rock bands, people choose other basses, even those who can afford to play/choose whatever they want.
Got a Ken Smith BSR Elite 5 and a 98 Peavey Walnut Wenge 5. Love them both and they are practically the same bass to me totally. Absolutely not a 4k to 5k difference for my ears.

Man that rivera is CLEAN sir!!
...was thinking the very same!
Both are top notch

El Peavey Cirrus es como el Ken Smith de nosotros los pobres
The Cirrus in my opinion sounds a little more bold and present. The Smith is more natural, and sweeter. Both great basses!
I already told yall the peavey cirrus is the poor man Ken Smith bass Amen
Beautiful Riviera!
what a tone , lovely ken smith
Car car is that. Beautiful

Hell Yes, in 1989 my buddy Mark got that car in mint condition for $900 ! How times have changed.
It glistens
Love that bass rig, sir!
Beautiful car
How did I miss this video come on CZcams

I just picked up a modded T20 from the pawn shop…God bless the poor soul who got rid of that one…
Brillant
I have a Cirrus 6 now and I love it! I really do but I’m trying to save for either a CR6 or a BT6
In this demonstration the Peavey definitely sounds brighter, livelier, & more aggressive. Both sound great
But Peavey Wins ! in my opinion
Fred Hammond played his Ken Smith on the same video that Resse played his Cirrus bass
Yes he did... it's very impressive how similar that cirrus sounds like a Ken smith

Tell me something I don't already know like what's the history with that sweet Riviera! If that car could only talk! 😂
Every time I see a comparison video featuring a Smith, the Smith wins. Just play one and you will understand.
I love both! But how about that smoking Riviera!
The Ken Smith has a richer sound to me
You have just made the ultimate frame too real 2 great basses must say i confused
This bass or ibanez sr1205e premium ? Which it's better ?
Nice car - Ken Smith more beef
Smith is still a liiiiiiitle beefier sounding, but man, they have very similar tonal characteristics!
Both sound good smith is more focused
for the price I prefer the peavey bass
Peavey sounds better than expected but it’s still not quite The Smith, nothing is.
Smith.
JOHNNY LEE IS A BAD BASS PLAYERS
Cirrus sounded very balanced, present and comfortable. Smith has a strong sound but too high for my ears.
Peavey wins!
They're both fantastic for fingerstyle, but none have a good slapping tone.
