  • The bears of Sequoia National Park in spring. Filmed in early June 2016. Around Log Meadow, between 4:3o pm and 6:oo pm. Were we encountered five different bears, all peacefully grazing in the meadow near the trail. This is not an action film, it is a casual observance of bears in the wild.
    Caution, this was filmed with cameras with very high optical zoom ability. Never get too close to, feed, or try to touch wildlife. If encountering bears in our National Parks, remember, if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. If you make the bear feel cornered, or that their young are in any danger. They can sprint up to 35mph, how fast can you run? You can hear in the video, that we make sure not to startle the bear, and that the bear is aware of us, and that if the bear comes closer to us, we move away and keep a safe distance between us. Get out, see nature, just be careful while doing it.

      @@rockyeasterline348 Grizzlies typically don't get that big in Yellowstone.
      Of course, every one in a while a huge male grizzly can get over the thousand-pound mark, but most of them tend to top out at 600-800 lb.
      The biggest grizzlies tend to reside in Katmai, where bears regularly weigh over a thousand pounds each summer.

    Thanks for all the comments. I feel the need to add. That suggestions of guns and bear spray should not be followed! It is illegal to carry, or discharge any weapons, including BB guns and bear spray, in the National Parks! To do so would be a federal crime. Bears very rarely attack people in the parks. If you are armed with knowledge, respect, and a good zoom on your camera, you can safely have amazing wild animal encounters. A safe distance is key. The most dangerous animal in the parks, by number of injuries, is - Deer. That's right deer. Far more people are injured by deer when people try to get that selfie with Bambi, than by any other animal in our parks. The second most dangerous, HUMANS. Bears don't even come close. Remember, bears and other wild life are protected in our Parks by federal law. Tourist who behave badly, are not. Besides, bears gotta eat too. Kidding, maybe. If you are too afraid to be in our parks without a weapon at your side. You should do us all a favor and just stay in the city.

      I was just going to state what Michael stated. Bear spray is not illegal to carry at all National Park Service sites. In fact, some actually encourage carrying it and consessioners actually rent or even sell it! It is always recommended to check the individual NPS park/sites website since what is prohibited or allowed in one, many not be the case for another!

      I understand guns but you should carry bear spray anytime your in the backcountry where bears are. Not all hikers carry a zoom camera to take photos of ears at a distance. Some people are just hiking and may have an encounter with a momma bear with cubs and need to defend themselves. Making the statement about bear spray is just plain silliness and bad advice. Nice video though.

      You actually can have a gun in a National park..I believe Obama made it a law. You just can’t bring it inside a building in the national parks or even shoot it, but you are legally allowed to carry. We talked to a ranger in Denali about our gun we brought. Like I said, you can’t not fire it though. Don’t understand the point of it but that’s just the law

    Whistling to alert a bear of your presence is not nearly enough. And how do you know you don't just sound like a song-bird to her. And what indication has she given that makes you think she knows you are there b/c nothing she's done on the video indicates she knows you are there?
    Why not use the international bear alert phrase: "Hey Bear. Hey Bear."

    • @garysimon6497
      @garysimon6497  Před 2 lety

      Bears can sense or smell humans long before you are anywhere near them. Whistling or hanging a small bell from your walking stick or back pack is also just as common a practice with hikers to prevent an accidental startling of wild life. Also, running from a bear is like running from a dog. They are hard wired to chase you, either in play or attack. Most bears can sprint up to 35 miles an hour.

    So, with hibernation a fact in a bear's life, I'm struck by how these adult bears eat...and eat...and eat...and eat...everything in sight...non-stop. If the hibernation period can last roughly seven months, then for the five or so months that mom is awake (I'm using a female with cubs in my example here), she has no choice but to engage in eating whatever she can...whenever she can...as she must put on in the vicinity of 40% extra body weight...perhaps as high as 50%?
    Watching it in action, as mom bear continuously shovels in mouthfuls of nothing more nutritious...nothing more delicious...than some form of a common field grass. I understand that the whole purpose of an animal hibernating is to specifically deal with the hardships and massive food shortages that typically accompany the winter months. In theory, I get it, but in practice, it just looks like an awful deal.
    As an adult bear, to continuously, each and every year, eat until you are so completely gorged that your body weight fluctuates as much as 40% - 50%, and to do this in a span as little as five months, just sounds so incredibly unhealthy. Now, I am obviously taking the viewpoint of the human body, where incredible weight changes mentioned previously for bears, and to hit these highs and lows every year of your adult life, and then somehow sleep it all off for seven straight months, sounds like a recipe for total body breakdown and as premature as premature death can be. I obviously understand that the bear's body has most likely evolved into a machine such as our human bodies, with peaks and plateaus, healthy variances within each, and an understanding of the species' ideal diet.
    Anyway, as I write this, I have just found myself thinking that say, for a one-year old cub who will be hibernating with mom, what about their dietary needs during the "gorge" season? As I initially think about it, what I see is actually what I don't see, which is while the mom eats everything not glued down, the cubs are doing nothing more than acting like cubs. They are still mostly drinking mom's milk, and on their ventures out, the cubs are generally playing, play fighting with each other, and sometimes, even sleeping. This energy-burning activity of the cubs playing is exactly the opposite of what mom is attempting to do. So, if mom must put on 40% - 50% excess body weight, what is required of the cubs for their slumber? Their weight gain is nothing more than a healthy, active cub who is growing stronger and heavier each day as he moves toward adulthood. Most of the cubs I see are lean 'n mean, so to me, there is no excess body weight to live off of for those seven months.

      @@davidortega357 NO! It is illegal to carry or fire weapons inside the National Parks. Even a BB gun, and Bear Spray are illegal. Bears are far, I say again, far less dangerous than humans. You are far more likely to be killed by a gun carrying human than you are by a bear. The only reason I can think of for suggesting taking ten people hiking with you is so that you believe the old saying, "You don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than your friend."
