Makes one wonder how many such recordings must exist in attics all over the world. Props to Thomas Alva Edison for his vision and persistence at bringing this wonder to the masses.
Looks like this was John Henry Nichols and friends. He was born 1882 in Scotland, indeed lived at 200 Fairview, Toronto, and worked as a machinist. Died in 1956 and is buried in the Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto. It would be neat if you could track down some descendants!
The betterment of home recording came from this natural device. Many have Thomas Edison to thank and it's easier than it looks using that home sound recording machine.

1918 is pretty late for a home cylinder recording: interesting that they could still find a brown wax blank to work with!
