Hollis Grant emerged from the vibrant yet tumultuous streets of New York City in the early 1970s, capturing the soul of an era with his poignant lyrics and compelling voice. Known for his deep, soulful sound and thought-provoking lyrics, Hollis quickly became a voice for the voiceless, singing about the harsh realities of street life with an authenticity that resonated with many.
Born into the challenges of inner-city life, Hollis was no stranger to hardship. From a young age, he was involved with local gangs, a path that led him to witness and experience the gritty aspects of urban survival firsthand. His experiences on the streets not only shaped his worldview but also his music, infusing his songs with raw emotion and hard truths about poverty, injustice, and struggle.
Despite his tough exterior, Hollis had a soft spot for pit bulls-dogs he felt were misunderstood and misrepresented much like himself. He often advocated for these loyal companions, seeing parallels between their plight and his own life, struggling against societal prejudices.
Hollis’s breakthrough came with his hit single “Rough Riders” and was swiftly gaining notice for his revolutionary music with a modern twist that spoke directly to the younger generations navigating the complexities of 70s urban America. His music was a blend of jazz, soul, and blues, but it was his spoken word poetry, delivered with a cool demeanor, that set him apart.
Tragically, Hollis’s promising career was cut short when he was fatally shot in a gang-related incident. This devastating event robbed the world of a rising star who could have continued to influence and inspire for decades. Today, Hollis Grant is remembered not just for his music but for his resilience and his relentless advocacy for those on the fringes of society. His albums are considered essential listening for those who seek to understand the soul of New York during one of its most dynamic and challenging times.

My Dad popped this into his 8 track tape player back in 1973, I was 3 and I remember it like it was yesterday.
Fun Fact , 1972-1976 Hollis Grant use to do maintenance work at the Roxy Saturday mornings .. Story is he was singing this tune while waxing the floors and a producer heard him.. rest was history
That’s where he met a stranger named Berry Gordy who passed his info to an A&R at Parallel Universal. One call was all it took! 📞 💰
Funny, I heard that's how it all began too. 🤣
Little known fact he was dating my auntie at the time. She was Berry’s assistant and set up the initial meeting/call.

My mom had this album. She said she remembers her and her homegirl sneaking to go to their concert their 12th grade year in 1973.
That's 70s gangsta right there
I remember when this came out...
Hollis had a product placement deal set up with 3M, who manufactured custom made 30 grit sandpaper saddle covers for the whole crew's bikes.
This led to Hollis writing and recording the underground hit "Dem Grits is Burnin' (My Rump)"
That album cover is hard AF

Motown dedication to the late DMX. I salute you for that.
I graduated high school in '72, and this song was everywhere on the radios and in record stores back then. My uncle ran a record shop and had all of Hollis Grant's records, including the album this was released on, It's Dark And Nam Is Hot. It details his life growing up in Yonkers, NY, and then being sent away to fight for his country in Nam (in which we lost). This album was particularly dark, retelling his tales of trying to survive in the NY ghettos. Robbing, stealing and doing anything to get by, and his constant fight with wrong and right, and him trying to live righteously. One of my favourite songs on that record was ATF, where he talked about his crazy escape from Viet Cong soldiers who were after him.
Anyway, a few years after I graduated, I was hanging out in my uncle's record store when Hollis Grant himself walked in. Dude was rolling at least 50 deep, and had a pitbull with him named Boomer. Despite this, he was one of the most down to earth people I'd ever met! He sounded exactly like he did on the records, too. I asked him if the barking he did on his album was actually him, or if he used one of his many dogs. I can confirm it's 100% Hollis!
He walked over to the Soul section and picked up a record from Diana Ross, My Hero Is My Gun. Told me he actually sampled it for his song Stop Being Greedy on the same album (It's Dark And Nam Is Hot), but he never actually owned a copy and literally searched every record shop in New York to find an original copy. His search brought him to my uncle's store, and finally, he was able to get his hands on an original copy.
My uncle being the stand up guy that he was gave him the copy, no charge. Hollis bought me a soda pop, gave me 20 bucks and signed my copy of his album before leaving. We chatted for at least 30 mins before he left. One of the coolest things that ever happened to me.
Rest in peace Hollis Grant.
Let's not forget his short movie career with Bruce Lee in the latter's final film, "Cradle 2 the Grave"
This is gold!!!
Great story
Where can I find more of his music?
I remember hearing this song while driving my little nephew Earl back from Juvy. Man, that kid was a handful. Grew up to make something of himself, though. Made us all proud. 👏🏾

We used to listen to this in the Apache every afternoon as we did patrol in the Da Nang Province. A feeling I can't explain...
I don't care what anyone says, I've always considered this to be a direct precursor to the hiphop sub-genre of Gangsta Rap. It is so fu©️kin hard.
I'll never forget the first time hearing this in my parents car at 6 years old. Needless to say 36 years later I'm finally hearing this again.
Full circle moment ⭕️
Memories to last a lifetime 🥰
This needs to come out now. It would devastate the airwaves.
Agreed
No cap....how did this joint escape Ruff Ryders radar?? Lox need to spit fire on this and do a tribute record to DMX
Hollis Grant was the opening act for the WattStax festival. The few people who saw his performance said it was legendary!

The Rough Riders were the most feared biker gang in harlem in the mid to late 70s.
Why do i feel so connected to this picture?
My Grandfather used to play this in the shop. That Hollis Grant was playing most of the day on weekends

Soul trap is what I'm hearing... the lyrics have the rhythm of trap but the sound is older. Unbelievable.

Another classic soul track. This is hot. I like how they have a much harder edge with their sound than "The Synthetics". These bangers you're doing are all no skips!

Fun Fact: Hollis was planning on doing collaborations with Curtis Mayfield and Bobby Womack back in the day.
...but due to scheduling conflicts, the projects sadly never materialized. You can however see them together in various photos at night clubs and shooting pool together. They were apparently pretty tight, off the stage.
