I have found myself doing it naturally whenever I sing. It doesn't matter what genre I am singing. I appreciate how you showed how to control it because there are times that I don't want it but it would come through.
I have vibrato and I need to learn to control it better. I’m 64 and I’m a lead singer in a band. It took me 5 years to rebuild the strength in my body and vocal chords that I’m getting more confident now than ever. If you’re just starting out or getting your voice back do not give up. I said it so many times to my husband “I should just quit”. Well I still take voice lessons and I still feel like I have something to say so I’ll keep going. Self expression is so healing and awareness is when you’re Bandmates turn to you and say “You knocked it put of the park” at 64! That makes all the hard work worth it. ❤
Same here, I consider myself an intermediate singer, one of the limitations IMO is not having really mastered vibrato. I can hold a pitch at the top of my range for a long time, but that seems to be my strength... Ironically that is kind of the opposite of what vibrato is, wondering do you find this also? My vibrato can sound honestly just as equally awesome as it does horrible, it really kind of sucks lol. I can do some nice studio tracks, but truth is any decent singer can. That makes sense though, that's why the most common respect people give about a singer goes something like "they sound JUST like the recording live!". Best of wishes.
I used to sing high but my throat won't let me now is there any exercise that will help.? I really enjoy your instructions you make it fun an helpful thank you 😊
My favorite female vocalist ever is Karen Carpenter and I love how she would sometimes choose to hold a note perfectly level and then release it into her immaculately pleasing and skillful vibrato. One of many favorite examples of this is the lovely touch she gave to Rainy Days and Mondays just after the “No need to talk it out” portion before the sax comes in. And Steve Perry will always be my favorite male singer and he’d employ the same technique so nicely in so many great songs. I love your pleasant tone; it’s reminiscent of Eva Cassidy whom you mentioned and whose voice was flawless and so angelic that it was apparently too good for earth and she was taken from us far sooner than any of us would have wished. Thank you for the video; superbly done.
I have a natural vibrato especially in high carried notes. Had this since a child. Didn’t know what it was called until about age 35. I had to sing Hopefully Devoted to you on stage in high school.
Thanks Lis, I struggle with supporting notes, breath control & management and I've been told that working on my vibrato would help and I've never been consistently able to do it on command. Now I've got the tools thanks to you. Great video, I appreciate you feeling ridiculous to help us!
I have 'favorite d' some of her lessons and have been practicing for few months and I have to admit those lessons have definitely helped me a lot. Thank you.
My favorite singer who uses vibrato is David Phelps. If you have never heard of him, I would recommend listening to him. He does a great job with vibrato with the song Nessum Dorma.
Sorry, I keep posting on these old videos, but I HAD to share this! Thgis video helped me SO MUCH! Being a musician already, but never taking vocal lessons, I always thought vibrato was something singers had to work at, like how we do lip vibrato with saxophone, or breath vibrato on a flute. When my voice would start to relax and ibrate, I was mistaking this as going off key, and my throat would tense up to push it back on pitch again (just like Lisa says in the video, when she talks about controlling it :D). I really wish I'd just bit the bullet back in high school and joined the choir haha
Ooh... Or should I say Hoo?! 😀 We're singing a choral piece (Charpentiere, not met him before! ) with trills for the first time and this has been so helpful for getting the proper relaxation and feel in the voice. Having said that the prolonged break has not done my voice any favours and at 63 I'm struggling with rather too much involuntary vibrato! Been really getting in the Christmas practice groove so the voice is coming back at last. Went to have a practice/fun sing with my dear friend yesterday. Very emotional because with our combined health issues it's been a couple of years since we could sing together. Thank you Lisa, your gentle use of vibrato has always been a favourite part of your delivery style for me. You have such a beautiful voice, it's wonderful to have an insight as to how you produce it.
I have also heard very recently that we must be in better control of our vibrato and though I agree we weren't born with one but most good singers have found their vabrato.
Thank you Lisa for these videos. They are engaging & helpful. Most your friendly and encouraging manner makes me feel like you believe in me. You are a huge encouragement. Thank you. God bless you. 🙏💕
i struggle so much with vibrato (struggling is maybe the problem lol) but i’m finally starting to feel it come thru in my voice. i can’t wait to try some of the techniques in this video! the song ‘la fama’ by the weeknd and rosalia feels to me like a beautiful example of subtle vibrato mastery from both singers
I’m here because my 8 yr old daughter had her first singing lesson and the instructor was excited because she was singing vibrato. I had no idea what he was talking about. He said most kids are much older before they do that.
My favorite singers are Joan Baez, Roy Orbison, & Leonard Cohen, so i learned to sing harmony, cuz i just couldn’t compete with them, but i can complement them. Now i sing tenor in a small choir full of seniors, & can no longer reach alto high notes. My vibrato shows up when i’m running out of air. I’m watching vocal coaches to learn to better support my choir.
Thank you this helps, I am always looking to improve my singing. My favorite singer is Alejandro Fernandez who has a powerful voice with great vibrato.
so is a vibrato something that happens naturally if you sing "right" or do you learn it? or both? bc sometimes you hear like a little kid sing smth and they have a vibrato. i've never been sure about it.
Subscribed to the channel. Thanks for this. It’s my dream to be able to sing with vibrato and I still haven’t got it! My favourite singer with vibrato is Allen Stone 🤌🤌
Some otherwise great singers have had vibrato that sounds forced. Elvis and Freddie Mercury come to mind. A singer with surprisingly good vibrato: David Lee Roth. (Also has great pitch and control, but he did have training).
Verbrato is the reason why I keep going with out it I would have given up this doesn't mean u should give up just because u might not have it if I could get it u can to I find hold a note and then just relax into it
Thank you for your great, easy lesson! Can't wait to practice!!! I love Julie Andrews beautiful vibrato. But there are sooo many...i LOVE Luther Vandross, Karen Carpenter has a beautiful vibrato, of course everyone loves Whitney Houston, CeCe Winans is amazing, Steve Perry (Journey), basically any opera singer & so many more! Thank uuu!❤
Hi Lisa! Thank you very much for the video, I discovered it today and will practice my vibrato! I can do it but not anytime I want in a song, and it always sounds kind of slow, like if the oscilliation was too slow. Do you have an advice to make it faster? Thank you!!
Ohh lisa you helped a lot the vibrato..is not easy ..but thought me with a funny way I liked it .. pushing the lower belly 😊😂❤❤ thank you.I will keep practicing
I need help holding back my vibrato. I've always had it naturally but I think it comes out too much and I don't know how to control it. I get nervous very easily as well, so nervous shakes and vibrato and it's just too much!
I am a professional vocalist (not as professional as I want) and I have no natural vibrato. Many years of professional vocal training could not bring a vibrato out. I despair that I will not ever achieve this one .😢. Singing for around 35 years.
I've been singing since i was young and I've been in the same situation. Idk what to do and how to do it. It comes and goes straight all the time. I hate it.
Question, I really want to sing with vibrato. I used to sing rock style 25yrs ago and never developed vibrato. Do I have to start with the basics with singing lessons or can I just practice what your saying in this video? I would also like to work with a coach as well. Any suggestions in the Jersey area? thank you.
I don't know what you mean by naturally, but I can sing a note straight or with vibrato if I want to. for me vibrato is intentional but its not artifical its still natural ...
I don't get it how it comes so naturally to some. At the last note I simple hold the note evenly with absolutely no vibrato entering in, and I can hold the note even for a long time until my breath runs out. The only way I seem to be able to enter vibrato is by forcing it e.g. by moving my jaw. Why do my notes sound so even? Even when recording my sound, the wave pattern reveals almost no vibrato, and a clear, even pitch.
I have never ever seen any actual explanation how to sing vibrato. They always say relax and do it. Thanks :-(
try to sing a note and then another slightly almost unrecognizibly higher or lower and keep doing it high, low, high, low EeEeEeE
I have found myself doing it naturally whenever I sing. It doesn't matter what genre I am singing. I appreciate how you showed how to control it because there are times that I don't want it but it would come through.
There's always someone in the comments who wants everybody to know how easy it is for them ;)
@@michelangelopainters5519i have always sung with vibrato, but it ain't NEVER easy 😁 sometimes my voice will crack! 🥴 these are wonderful tips for me.
You got that right!!

I'm the opposite. Never born with vibrato. Straight toner all my life. I would die to have that natural ability of yoursssss. I envy youuuuuuu
If I knew how I would record "Can't Help Falling" to show how two of your lessons made a huge difference in my singing. THANK YOU.
I've been singing for over 10 years and did not find my vibrato till his video you absolute wizard.
The Patrick Star “dopey” voice tip at 2:30 was GAME CHANGING for me!
