    Nothing drives out the shimmer when you're cleaning it out as well as a syringe can. It's seriously your best friend for cleaning out the feeds and getting up into the intl converters and ink reservoirs to make them pristine again!

      The Goulet Pen Company Thanks Colin. I of course put shimmering in my fav pens which are TWSBI Vac and TWSBI diamond because of the broad nibs but I would like to switch shimmering inks into a cartridge pen for the sake of flow and cleaning. Yes, that copper shimmer looks amazing!

    Like this muchly, also the close shots Andy did which are much better than the older Q&A where Brian zoomed in best he could to show various things but it was a struggle at times to see what he was doing. The lighting was okay showing Brian and Drew but when you come back from the close shots to the general view there is a filter shift which I'd distracting just for a couple of seconds, but this I think is due to the tech in the camera, it's a bit awkward to get a seamless transaction but the video camera work is good, thanks Andy... Whaow!!! Just how far in chemistry ink has leaped in the last couple of years! it's difficult to keep up with the qualities the ink people offer. I want that nitrogen now I've seen it and to show all those ink samples is really appreciated. The postal costs from the USA are the deal breaker though because the UK customs then charge, then the post office put a £8 charge on the package just to hand it over the counter, so the UK guys are going to struggle to get some inks at a decent price unless the pen people here stock it..eg Noodlers inks and pens... Hard to find what you desire in the UK... PurePens are the only ones for Noodlers stuff I've found.
    I really like Drew,,, he's bonkers.
    Sorry everyone for the long reply... I'm going to have to start instagram and Pinterest for this but hey... I like to spout.
    Thanks Brian and Drew... the dynamic duo.
    Best wishes as always to all pen people.

    Having some vintage aerometric celluloid and resin pens I was advised by more than one pen restorer to use dyed inks only. In most other pens it would be acceptable as the more modern materials used in construction are much more resilient to chem. reactivity or simple clogging. M nibs etc. seem to work the best with sheening ,shimmering as long as cleaning is done regularly.

  • @davidjacobson5710
    @davidjacobson5710 Před 6 lety

    As a person that is into both shimmer and sheening inks, I have an extensive collection of shimmer inks that includes the J Herbin inks, all the Diamine Shimmertastic inks, Nemosine Nebula inks, a few De Atramentis Pearlescent inks and the Robert Oster four ink set.
    I agree that the J Herbin shimmer inks are the best behaved and easiest to agitate into standard use. (Caroube de Chypre has been in my Lamy 2000 Makralon EF for over a year and a half.) Emerald of Chivor has a shimmer and sheen. (Special mention to the newest Amethyste!) Diamine is the next well behaved followed closely by Nemosine. There are too many great colors in Diamine to pick out just one (or two). Nemosine’s Blue Snowball is amazing to look at after it dries. However both of these need a pen that is more forgiving. I do recommend the Nemosine Singularity demonstrator (F is good). It will allow you to see the particulates mix. And their converter does have a small ball inside. I don’t recommend TWSBI pens or pens that use a nib unit like Karas Kustoms or Namisu. The other pen which works well is Lamy Safari/Al Star/Vista with a F nib.
    You need to be able to clean the feed at most every other month. Like I said, J Herbin is the best behaved. De Atramentis does tend to clog even my Nemosines or Lamys after a few days.
    Robert Oster is not recommended for fountain pens. It says so on the labeling. Dip pens and similar only. I did try in Singularities and Vistas. It didn’t work well.
    As far as sheen, very excited about the Organics. Thanks for picking those up.

    I just recently acquired a bottle of the Diamine Frosted Orchid, and even on just laser paper it is to die for!!! It's basically a straight up silver ink, with a hint of the purple around the edges and at starts and stops. It is so amazing to write with and I'm just using it in a Ensso pen with an extra-fine titanium nib. Put it on TaR paper...and other than a dry time of days, it's nothing short of spectacular. I will admit that I think it's going to necessitate the purchase of a low cost sonic cleaner though.

    Question to Drew: I have heard that nemosine nibs can be a bit dry, does that not affect the shimmer or is this not an issue. Also, what do you think of the pen?

  • @kirstiecarterheath8292
    @kirstiecarterheath8292 Před 6 lety +6

    I much prefer sheen and would love a list of which inks are specifically sheening, not shimmer. On your site, I know you have a search filter for viewing inks with shimmer, but I don't think there is a filter for sheen, could that be added?
    All that being said, I NEED the copper violet and copper black shimmer inks 😄

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  Před 6 lety

      Kirstie Carter that’s a great idea. The tough thing is that it’s somewhat subjective...when people want sheen, they want it everywhere, but al lot depends on the paper and volume of ink, nib size etc. to definitively say “this has sheen and this one doesn’t” is a blurry line....-Brian

    • @kirstiecarterheath8292
      @kirstiecarterheath8292 Před 6 lety +4

      The Goulet Pen Company Thanks Brian!
      Maybe there could be a disclaimer at the top of the list, or within the individual ink listings, that says "Appearance of sheen is not guaranteed, but rather dependent on nib and paper characteristics." I know I would just love to more easily see which inks have the possibility of a sheen, even knowing that I may have to play with some nib and paper combinations to bring it out.

    These are fun!
    Now for a writing question, how do these inks work if you are a "lefty"? Does the longer dry time mean more smudging?
    Also, are we going to see some other members of the GPC team or will Drew be getting roped into all of the episodes?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  Před 6 lety

      Yes, this can definitely lead to more smudging issues, especially if you're a side-writer. Tricks to avoiding that kind of take away from the inks unfortunately (finer nibs, absorbent paper). Wanted to get a few under our belt first before expanding to other team members, but they're coming! - Colin

      Colin, thanks for the reply. Ok, will have to stay away from these inks as being a side writer... But there are so many others to choose from that work for me.

      @michaelmcevoy9278 Před 6 lety

      I love sheening inks, and I’m a lefty side-writer. On Rhodia or Tomoe River paper, if I’m just a little bit careful, smudging isn’t a huge issue for me. But I’m willing to take a little smudge to get the beauty of the sheen! ;-)

      @peterhofmann8292 Před 6 lety

      Michael, thanks for the tip, might just pick one of these up to test. Agree that paper makes all the difference, currently using Rhodia which is what I can get locally (in Canada!)

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  Před 6 lety

      Our GPC Notebooks (www.gouletpens.com/goulet-notebooks/c/476 ) have Tomoe River paper in them which is ideal, but they might be too thin for everyday use. Rhodia & Clairefontaine are also good options. - Colin

    I personally prefer sheen, since it doesn't threaten to clog the pen as much as the little particles of shimmer.

    I don't need to add any more high maintenance items to my life. But I do love the teal color of the the J Herbin Emerald of Chivor. I neither need nor want the gold particulates. Could you recommend a non particulate ink that looks like the base color of the Emerald of Chivor?
    I can't believe that I'm the only one who likes some of these shimmering inks for the color of the ink alone. You could do an episode where you identify non particulate equivalents for your subscribers.

      @Gouletpens  Před 6 lety

      I like that idea. Not shimmering inks that are similar! For Emerald of Chivor, Monteverde California Teal is pretty close! We actually just did an ink review on it: blog.gouletpens.com/2018/02/monteverde-california-teal-ink-review . Robert Oster Peppermint is close too. - Colin

      David Heverly. Hiya David, I like just the ink part of Emerald of Chivor and others. Try this, DON'T disturb the particulate, leave the bottle ready for the ink up. Leave it for a good half hour or so. Carefully, put the nib in so it will draw up the ink from the top and steadily operate the converter twist knob,dont disturb the particulate. OR.. Use a pipette or clean eye dropper and take off some ink from the top... You can dilute the ink a little bit because it is thick to support the particulate, you could even put some water back into the the bottle if you want to have the particulate in for future use... Be careful don't go mad with dilution just a bit, I put 5ml back in the BOTTLE but it can stand a little more. Dilute what you take off by just 1ml at a time. If you want to just buy the colour I think Iroshizuku make the colour. Go onto fountain pen network and put the question in the search box... Emerald of Chivor without particulate... That's where I found it.
      Ok hope this helps you.
      Best wishes

      Lez: Thanks for the suggestion. It seems rather involved. If Colin's recommendation regarding Monteverde California Teal is what I'm looking for, I'll go that route. It's a lot cheaper for almost twice the ink. It doesn't come with the nicer bottle, but I don't care if it comes in a mason jar.

    Sheen is the result of the chemical products making up the ink drying up and crystallizing into nanocrystals on your paper, resulting in a "metallic" shine at certain angles where certain wavelengths of light matching the crystals are reflected off the facets of the nanocrystals. The more absorbant the paper, the more the ink is thinned out and pulled inside the paper, instead of crystallizing onto the surface of the paper where light can reach it therefore, not allowing sheen to show. Tomoe River all the way!!!

    A contrasting "sheen" would seem to make the most sense if you're worried about security: a blue ink with a contrasting tone of red, for example, will NEVER get mistaken for a photocopy.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  Před 6 lety

      The issue with that is the lack of permanence on a lot of sheening inks. Not sure there are any! - Colin

    Be careful about telling people that sheening inks require less maintenance than shimmering inks as a rule. The Nitrogen Royal Blue and Henry David Thoreau Walden Pond Blue were both terribly hard to clean out of my pens, even after just a couple of days. They are so saturated that it's very difficult to clean. At least as much so as the shimmering inks I've tried.
