Recreational Cannabis in Missouri Raises Questions of Equity

  • The legalization of medical marijuana in Missouri has resulted in $30 million in sales in June of 2022 alone. As an upcoming ballot measure seeks to legalize recreational use, Flatland looks at who currently benefits most from this emerging industry and whether those affected most by damaging policies of the war on drugs are getting a fair cut.

Putting such tight restrictions on specifics of a business such as controlling who they can do business with is unethical in the way Missouri is going. Why can't a small wholesale business sell to a large business with the capabilities of actually buying the product? They're ensuring the small guys can't make money.

I just spent some more money on lights to expand my grow room I have in my basement for growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. I have a nice garden outside and I made a grow room in my basement for seedlings and about 20 different type of flower and vegetable plants because I love taking care of them all year round. I decided to expand the area for more than enough room for 6 mature cannabis plants and I'm waiting on seeds that I ordered online. I love how they said the money would go to help veterans. But when you looked at the PDF file of the bill.. there was nothing about the money going to help veterans.. it is all going to sheriff office police training DHSS for training and a new job they are creating with the bill they passed.
The only good part of the bill was the expungement of criminal records and the decriminalization of recreational cannabis.
But what everyone doesn't realize is this gives the cops back probable cause to arrest you.
No they can't arrest you for possession... but let's say your eyes are red (for whatever reason) your vehicle stinks of good sticky cannabis.. you make 1 small mistake in front of a cop and get pulled over... now because you have more then 1 tell tale sign that you may have been using cannabis during or right before driving. They have probable cause to now pull you out of the vehicle and test you for DUI. And please tell me how your going to beat a FALSE DUI if you have smoked atleast 3 days prior to that traffic stop? You won't and there is going to be a huge increase in DUI arrests. Because the cops still have to make their quota. And it is still an easy arrest and conviction.

@@soulseeker42388 I've only been pulled over in Missouri once by a cop who didn't have cause. That was a MO Highway Patrolmen who suspected I was carrying weight. I refused to let him search my car until I was practically hypothermic standing outside because I knew he didn't have cause, but I also knew if he brought in a dog the dog would alert him, so I finally gave him permission to search, but I also told him I knew what he'd done to me was illegal and that the few grams of "dirt weed" he'd find wouldn't impress anyone at HQ. I wasn't a jerk though. I just told him the truth, so he ended up letting me go.
That was around 25 years ago, just a year before I moved here. I have never been harassed by law enforcement since living here. I live in rural SW MO and rarely go to our bigger cities here but I've never been harassed when I have. Weed has been a pretty low priority for our law enforcement for a pretty long time. You can't go driving around like Cheech and Chong but you can take a quick puff now and then and not get harassed. For the record, I've been driving for 46 years and have never been in an accident or got a moving violation, or even a parking ticket. Been puffing doobies for 50 years.
The laws we've passed could be a lot better, but we'll be able to work on that. Just the evolution from criminal to medicinal to legal with restrictions shows we can continue to make progress.

MISSOURI POT FARMER VOTE SONG $$
I got out my pipe stuffed it with pot
You better believe it held a whole lot.
I whipped out a lighter thumbed up a flame
Sucked down that smoke which comforts my brain.
    I tried alcohol smoked cigarettes
They did nothing but give me regrets.
My mom had arthritis could not walk around
I rolled her a joint she danced on the ground.
I thought I was losing my lovemaking knack
After I smoked some to me it came back.
Soon I decided prices were high
I searched for some ground I wouldn't have to buy.
I bargained for seeds from smokers all around
Got in my truck and drove out of town.
I walked through the woods where wild birds nest
Found me the meadow I thought was the best.
I dug up the ground sowed all my seeds
Said a small prayer for strong, healthy weeds.
I watered at night with a five-gallon pail
Mosquitoes went hungry for I wore a veil.
Seven months went by; I thought I would die
Till the Halloween moon was high in the sky.
At night I went out, in a camouflage suit
Used my corn knife to chop down the loot.
I hung it up to dry where it couldn’t be found.
Came back and got it, when it had turned brown.
I trimmed off the buds, stuffed them in bags
Called all my friends and passed out free drags.
In less than a week my crop was gone
I flew to St. Thomas with a love hungry blonde!!

"Recreation" means "refreshment or curing of a person" to "renew" or be "recreated".
The true meaning of recreation is what I hope is the purpose of using cannabis. However, I know too many users who climb into debauchery when using it. That is the big concern for many. If you want to use cannabis, be responsible and do it with believing it is not a "party" enhancer, or, to be mixed with alcohol. It should be used in meditation to reflect on your self to face your demons. There is when the renewal comes.
    I’ll step down, now.

    • @soulseeker42388

You just showed how much propaganda has influenced you... obviously you know nothing of ture cannabis users saying they turn to debauchery.. the only reason cannabis users have ever turn to debauchery is because of the government and legal status. You know after you got caught with cannabis you were treated worse then a child raping pedophile.
I personally am one of those people your talking about and the only reason I have as bad of a background as I do is because of the stigma that previously surrounded cannbis users.
Because I got caught with cannabis. And became a felon here in Missouri for it (2004) I was denied housing housing assistance financial assistance job job promotions food stamps basically any type of help to maybe actually get my life back together I was denied.
So when your treated worse then a child raping pedophile yeah you have a tendency to do whatever you can in life to survive and not care about the consequences.
And I say treated worse then them because here in Missouri if you deny pedophiles any of those same things it is considered discrimination and a hate crime. Pedophiles here could get all the financial assistance available along with housing assistance and food stamps. Depending on the job (no contact with kids obviously) they get hired and promotions. But if you has been convicted of cannabis. You are the worst scum of the earth.

Where in what I said did I claim all people who use cannabis climb into debauchery? Nothing that I said had any subtext into what your experience is. You do not know me, nor do you know my stance on cannabis. Notice, I did not say "weed" or "marijuana", because I call it what it is.
You should reread what I posted, without assuming I am attacking you or your experience. My comment was only toward those who misuse cannabis. Just as food is meant for nourishment and is abused by some as gluttony, cannabis is, also, abused by those who seek only to enhance their social experience.
Absolutely, the criminalization of cannabis has had a horrible effect on many justified users. I recognize that it is a plant with some very good qualities. However, in the wrong hands, those qualities become hidden and the ignorance of it’s use has placed it in the minds of many as a bad plant. |God| did not make anything to be bad, but, bad intentions obscure the reality of it. Education is where it should begin.
Maybe that clears some things up for you.

Thank you for sharing your opinion.
Do you feel achieved by your fascist grouping of others? Just because you would rather satisfy your primal urges instead of taking care of your self does not mean I am wrong in what I have shared. In fact, your response does more to justify me than it does you. Call me whatever you wish. Your words against me do not hinder the truth I know.

Marijuana is very harmful to public health, no less so than alcohol or cigarettes. I know from personal experience that children who smoke pot do worse in life by a variety of measures: education, family and intimacy, career advancement and choice, crime victim. What I hear on this piece is the same combination of victim equity dogma that degrades society when used in other contexts. Then, of course, there is the black market and it’s impact on illegal completion, health, crime, etc….

@@CaptainSwaggerMcPimp true, is some places but California weed industry collapsed and returning to criminal penalty is now on the table in at least three currently legal states. Unlike alcohol, weed also entangled with cartels and opiate and meth manufacture, distribution is driving even more calls for returning to criminal penalty. If it were true that individuals could grow and smoke their own, then that is quite different than the so-called weed retailing, which is a total sham too. I think in a short few years, society will understand that the weed grown today is as harmful as opiates and speed. Time will be the judge.
