Another wonderful video Emmy, and a great review! And thanks a LOT for the shout out too! It's nice that you can appreciate a ration for what it's designed for and not automatically dis it because it's not "real" food. I'm very impressed that you managed to make such a complete review in under 9 minutes! Between Gundog, Kiwi Dude and myself I tend to be the most "serious" reviewer, and I tend to put a lot of information (whether useful or useless) in my videos. I try to edit my vids down as much as possible, but can never seem to get them anywhere close to ten minutes. I've been inspired to try harder. Thank you again!

Yes and no. It literally translates as "[I/we] humbly receive [this meal]", give or take, but you are correct in that it originates in a Japanese Buddhist practice of acknowledging the blessings that nature (which includes the spiritual world), your parents, and the Emperor have provided you.

I love the way she reacts in general to food, even when she doesn't like something and it's really gross, she doesn't do the stuff most youtubers do and yell and hoot and holler and be like "ewww gross! That is so nasty!" She genuinely tastes the food and explains why it doesn't taste good and she does it in a nice, calm, respectful way.

what you dont know is that its meant for combat and therefor causes you not to defecate for about a few days. it backs up your system and when you start eating "normal" food again it doesn't go well, causing your stool to be liquefied.

i went to a JROTC camp and was so blown away by these types of meals! the idea of just using water to make a chemical reaction to heat food was so fascinating and i'd never heard of it before. the meal itself didn't taste that great but i think the moment made it really special haha

Emmy, you asked for input from people who haf experience with military field rations. I spent a few years on active duty in the US Army and my experience of the MREs was quite a bit different than yours has been.
I was eating these things during their initial deployment and I even had a few C-rations during basic training. (I wore the can opener for the C-rations on my dog tag chain during my entire service career.) Some of the MREs were great, but there were a few truly god-awful ones that stuck in my memory.
The worst one by far was the Chicken ala King meal. There wasn't enough Tabasco sauce in the world to kill the taste. You couldn't even get Rangers to eat it and there was a standing joke that feeding it to POWs constituted a Geneva Convention violation. Then there were the dehydrated beef patty and the dehydrated pork patty, or as we referred to them "hockey pucks." You could easily break a tooth on either of them.
This isn't to say that they were all bad. The beef stew meal would rival anything your mom made and everyone loved the beef in barbecue sauce meal. Plus back then the deserts weren't commercial food and some of them were beyond amazing (I particularly liked the maple walnut cake).
It seems maybe like the western MREs (from what I've seen in your videos) focus more on the creature comforts (coffee, snack, etc.) all contained, while the Japanese kit focused more on the quality of what was inside. Is that true?
+Dog Flamingo I think another problem is that white rice usually fares better when preserved/re-heated than shortbread or pasta which is included in most western MREs. But japanese are quite fond of high quality food.

Iâve become strangely addicted to these ration pack tastings you have done and I noticed that this one from Japan has a lot less to it than all of the others Iâve watched you open up and taste. Interesting that you mention it tastes so good. Quality over quantity for Japanese soldiers ? đ

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. One of the biggest mistakes in my life was trying furikake, it ruined good old plain rice for me. I became addicted to it, I live in a small city in Mexico, and furikake costs an eye and your first born :(

+Kenneth Kwan I'm not sure where you could get the JSDF MRE .. BUT, you can find the packaged rice that can be 'cooked' in a similar way in Korean supermarkets. My family ate a lot of them when we went camping :)

Just had a JSDF type 2 with mackerel in miso sauce... so good! The mackerel actually looked like it had been grilled before packaging, and not at all dry! Thank you so much for showing how the ration heater worked, I would have got it wrong otherwise!
