  • Do Indians really work in IT, eat bowls of curry (and smell of it) and are obsessed with Bollywood? Indians tackle these common stereotypes, ranking them as true, false or somewhere in the middle.

And I think I can say what I feel here in comments untill and unless it's harsh and heart breaking or disgusting, they are talking about my country I can comment so that next time they make video similar to this they can use my opinion.

I'm a European woman married to an Indian man and we live in India, no plans of leaving :)
    1. While software engineer still is a popular degree to get, I've seen Indians excel in any field they put their mind to. Doctors, lawyers, physics, pharmacy, maths, arts, you name it, the brain power here is insane!
    2. My husbands hates modern Bollywood with a passion. For him good Bollywood stops in the mid 90s. (Personally I prefer classic 1960s Bollywood). But yeah, it is a HUGE and massively popular industry. We live in Mumbai. Every other person here dreams of entering the business. A little bit of dancing is a must especially on weddings. You cannot refuse. But everyone's very lenient towards others and themselves about the quality of their 'moves'.
    3. Never even once I met an Indian in India who smelled like curry. That's cause we have exhaust fans in kitchens here. I guess if you cook the same foods in western apartments especially with windows clothes you won't be able to avoid it. But I prefer someone smelling like curry any time over someone smelling of sausage or booze (both super common in my home country).
    4. Contrary to popular belief arranged marriage does not equal forced marriage. Mostly parents and extended family will keep suggesting people to you and you can say no or yes. Another way round is that you have an idea who you'd like to marry and your folks do a kind of background check on them by getting in touch with the other family. Your family can indeed veto your choice if they find you incompatible, but they won't force you to marry a certain person. I mean by law you can still marry whoever you want, but most Indians love their families and wouldn't want to alienate themselves from them by going against their wishes. It's just a traditional form of match making and most people I ever met, young and old, find it completely natural. It's just normal. In urban places though love marriage (without parental involvement) is more and more common. However, arranged marriages still prove to be way more long lasting, love marriages often not so much. That has to do with divorce being quite a taboo still though. Again you'll find more divorce in urban areas, where people tend to be not as traditionalist.
As someone who didn't grow up with the concept of arranged marriage, I could never imagine it for myself, but I do understand the value of it in the Indian context. India is an insanely complex place with so many various religions, cultures, subcultures, languages, customs, traditions, food restrictions etc. It does in many ways more often than not make for a smoother marriage if you and your partner do come from the same or at least a similar sub-group.
    5. Yes, they are always late (for private meetups that is). It's something I struggled with a lot in the beginning. I'm a German, go figure. But it's fine, they all show up at some point. You get used to it. But boy did I read a lot of books and bought a lot of random crap while waiting for people in the beginning.
    6. Yes, and it's contagious. I am unable at this point to buy anything online at the normal price. I have to wait for discounts to come on. Thankfully Indian online shopping knows their customers and puts up special offers all the time. Btw. there is some places even in India where you cannot bargain, malls, supermarkets and department stores eg. But again, special offers are a-plenty. Never hurts to ask ;)
Btw. even salespeople love to bargain. Like, if you are at certain street stalls that expect their customers to bargain, it seems to be part of their day's fun for the seller as well. I've seen sellers react so disappointed if someone just accepted the first given price. Like lovelessly stuffing the goods in a plastic bag and not giving the customer another glance after handing it over. When you had a fun back and forth, maybe with some light hearted jokes sprinkled in, even if you're paying suddenly just a quarter of the first given price, the seller is all smiles, gives you another freebee on top and asks you to come back again soon.
    7. I hardly hear it anymore and during my last visit to the US my American friends from way back when were shocked that I (!!!) also had developed an Indian accent. Well, I'll take their word on it. But thing is, if you speak with a British or American accent here, most people just won't understand you. Anyway I find Indian English is a form of English in its own right. It's charming.
Thank you for this entertaining video! Everyone in the video seemed very sweet and funny! :)

@@Tera_1008th_baap I always had an interest in India, so even at home in Germany I studied about Indian culture and languages. When I first came here I already knew how to read and write Hindi and had also studied some Sanskrit. Just out of general interest.
Then even before getting to know my husband I worked for a year in Mumbai as a German language teacher at a university and just liked the city a lot. I feel better in Mumbai than in my German hometown. Better food, more lively, more multicultural and also a lot warmer. (Winter in Germany is too long for me!) It's very hard to ever get bored in Mumbai and at the same time it's very safe.
Also my husband is Marathi and has always lived in Mumbai. His parents are here too and I love them a lot (they are very lovely people), so it was a natural choice to stay close to them.
Plus also my husband has his business here, so for him there was no real option of leaving.

Growing up in the southern US,being from a very poor family I never knew much about my ancestry other than I was of "mostly" European ancestry. But I always knew that there was something different about me and so did everyone else .I was always being asked if I was Mexican or Native American etc because I had a much darker complexion that most of the kids I went to school with...I always assumed that I was part Native American (and I am) and that would explain my different physical appearance. But I was always curious as to where my ancestors came from....so when genetic genealogy became a "thing" I tested with several DNA testing companies and had several family members tested as well. It was a huge surprise to learn that I had DNA matches with the descendants of people that left Northwestern India(possibly from the Rajasthan area) almost 1000 years ago! My maternal uncle even has a solid DNA match with a man from that part of India. Now I have an almost insatiable hunger to learn about my ancestors and their places of origin. I'd love to someday visit India and meet the people.

I'm actually a Canadian guy dating an Indian girl from India proper as of writing this; here is What I can tell you from what I've observed:
    1. Definitely what parents WANT - not necessarily the case. My GF is in a science-affiliated field but nowhere near engineer. Her parents are either in business or military. So - half truth, half myth!
    2. My GF HAAAAAAATES Bollywood/Tollywood/Indian Cinema XD She's more into comic book movies like me, we're massive nerds - so often myth!
    3. My GF has never once, in the months we've dated, smelled like curry. Myth!!
    4. Arranged marriages are still suuuuuuper common in India and here in the South Asian community, but over time they've become much less... "arranged" arranged, both partners have loads of input and it's extremely consensual in *the overwhelming majority* of cases. Incidentally, I am caucasian and her parents are more or less cool with it, and her parents are definitely not in a very traditional marriage arrangement. So - true, but NOT ALWAYS!!
    5. In the months we've been together, my GF has been early, on time and late on different occasions - but her brother is ALWAYS late XD so truth AND myth!!
    6. The cheap part is TOO REAL - my GF is VERY aware of finances, though over time she has mellowed, and so is her family - definitely true XD
    7. The accent part may be the strangest part of all - after having lived here for a year, my GF's accent is mostly Canadian with some Indian-isms (comparable to Shreya's in the video), but when she speaks to her family or anyone who is Indian, she *INSTANTLY* adopts a full Indian accent - it's a very peculiar and wonderful thing to watch happen, because languages interest me a lot and her accent switching is quite impressive! Strangely enough, both truth AND myth!
Overall, dating my GF has been a wonderful joyous experience as we are such compatible humans with much in common and much to learn from one another!! She is truly wonderful and I'm grateful to be with her. Thank you for the excellent content guys - keep it up, and keep breaking down your barriers everyone!!

2:16 : LMAO ... my husband is Indian. before we bought our house: we lived in apartments or extended stay places. Our neighbor, two stories up, came down when I was in the pool to tell me that my husband's cooking was making THEIR eyes water and could he please shut the sliding glass door when he cooks. I was like ... NOOOO don't make me close that door! I'm gonna DIE! I think if my husband ever ran out of spices, he would just spray pepper spray into the pan and call it mild. I THOUGHT I'd have gotten used to it after ten years of marriage. No. I've lost my gallbladder, had the **WORST** morning sickness in history, and now our kiddo and I hide upstairs to try to escape the spices. There is no way I *DONT* smell like curry when he's been in the kitchen RUINING my spaghetti sauce by 'fixing it' with Indian spices and putting eggs in it. **grrrrrrr Never mess with spaghetti sauce! Ten years and he still says my sauce is a great curry base...* and to Sabby for his 'in a hundred years everyone is going to look like us" Ummm... I can tell ya: Indians and Whites make dang cute kiddos. My sons adorable and somehow between my deep green eyes and my husband's dark brown..... our kid has bright amber eyes... yes... amber (looks orange). He's stunning!

He went to school to be an agricultual worker and help out in rural areas, (so false.) My boyfriend loves the drama/music in some bollywood movies, other than that he loves comedy movies. He always eats veg curry. Even though his parents are for arranged marriage, they are okay if we decide to get married. So true and false. Always on time though, or sometimes early, so not true. No strong accent, but the little bit of indian accent he has is cute. I love him soo much.

The curry smell thing is true in particular situations.
If you cook anything in confined spaces without proper ventilation, you will smell of it. Colder climate countries like UK, Canada and parts of USA are very cold and you can't just open the windows when you're cooking. Hence, you end up smelling like curry. But same is true if you cook fish or japanese or chinese food or make a huge chicken roast with loads of herbs and what not!
