  • The @backtothesea society invited me to be part of their Shell and Tell video series. I grabbed one of the few shells I have and just talked about it. Enjoy!

    Awesome video! I didn’t realize they also had a 5 arm pattern like starfish and sand dollars; all those spines really obscure that fact
    How do they grow their shells and what material is it made from (I think it’s calcium carbonate? Is it the same material as oyster shells, or maybe significantly different) specifically, do they build up their shells from calcium dioxide? And let’s say that there are millions of zombie urchins on the sea floor… could their shells be crushed into something useful?

    Totally fascinating! Thank you.
    Looks like these lovely shells were the original inspiration for the Russian bejewelled Fabergé eggs!

    Lovely! Thanks for the lesson. So if a Shell os purple, what does it eat? I love finding these when i Dive. But never found One perfectly intact. Always with a shattered bum.

      Hey TD! Thanks for watching. The purple ones eat seaweeds too but focus on the brown and red algae, but can also eat other dead stuff they find along the way. A complete intact urchin test is an exciting find! Keep looking. :)

      how interesting that what they eat is what colours them. Yesterdays find was really a beautiful one. Huge, it filled up my hand, and was so richly purple coloured.(thats what she said joke insert here) I will be always looking out for these. They are quite magical and another examples of Gods , beauty, art, and Its sacred geometry. Thanks for the video and reply. Wish you all the best!

    Can they live in freshwater?

    • @MarineBiologyMel
      @MarineBiologyMel  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey! They are strictly a marine species, and can be found in cold and tropical oceans!

      @@MarineBiologyMel oh thank you I heard that the green sea urchin was euryhaline

      @@maisingrux oh yes, they can tolerate lower saline environments! I thought you were asking if they live in freshwater lakes or rivers. Their whole family, echinoderms (sea stars, urchins, sand dollars), are found only in the sea. Great question.
