  • This will be the hardest you will see 1309 work on her current route. With 7471 dynamic breaks fully applied, 1309 put up no fight against the SD40. 1309 accelerated up the mountain, not even struggling.

The sounds of a steam engine are so musical, to think this probably where the stylistic rhythm of "railroad" music came from! As well as a lot of classic American folk music!

The power of steam is absolutely incredible. Watching a single steam locomotive do the work of several modern diesel electrics is one awesome sight. Imagine how it felt to be an engineer on one of these giants back in the 40s. 1 man harnessing the power to pull millions and millions of pounds of freight up a mountain grade with your machine.

With the diesel engine dynamic brakes fully applied does that lock the up n keeps the wheels from turning n if so was 1309 pulling the diesel engine with the wheels locked up?

    • @haydenharman2351

Great question the easiest way for me to explain dynamic breaks is that think of it as a J-Brake on a tractor trailer but on a diesel electric engine. This video has a decent explanation of how it works. czcams.com/video/4v7qMYUIHHA/video.html

as much as i love steam locomotives, i cant believe they made it pull against the dynamic brakes on the diesel locomotive - im in california, i just had to replace the engine in my piece of shit car to pass smog, just so i could obtain a tag - it cost me $1200, im currently laid off and broke. just like you cant smoke in a restaurant anymore, because you cant contain the smoke to one area, neither can they - so what the f ck ? if they can get rid of newsum i dont care if they run it everyday - as a matter of fact id like to convert my pick up to wood fired steam -
