- This will be the hardest you will see 1309 work on her current route. With 7471 dynamic breaks fully applied, 1309 put up no fight against the SD40. 1309 accelerated up the mountain, not even struggling.

0:42 Credit to 1309 for dropping some sick beats!
The sounds of a steam engine are so musical, to think this probably where the stylistic rhythm of "railroad" music came from! As well as a lot of classic American folk music!
Trains and specifically steam locomotives make some of the best noises in the world in my opinion.
Almost 80 years old, the grand lady is strong as if not more than when new! All this did was show what she was built for, puts on a nice show does she?
Steam is still king, even if it is pushed aside for economic reasons.
I agree, steam is still king. People really seem to underestimate how strong she is.
The power of steam is absolutely incredible. Watching a single steam locomotive do the work of several modern diesel electrics is one awesome sight. Imagine how it felt to be an engineer on one of these giants back in the 40s. 1 man harnessing the power to pull millions and millions of pounds of freight up a mountain grade with your machine.
That a big locomotive for a tourist RR to operate. Congratulations on a fantastic restoration.
Thanks. The wmsr crew definitely had their hands full with this one.
@@haydenharman2351 I can well imagine! Congratulations to everyone who made it happen.
Robert told me those two engines gave eachother about everything they could.
Very cool video.
This engine and its class were tough ones back in the day especially when hauling heavy freight trains on the Chesapeake and Ohio line. And come to think of it this engine would look really good double heading with nickel plate 765
Wow, 1309 really knocked the socks off of that sd-40. Nice video.
She sure is strong. Glad you enjoyed!
Absolutely beautiful. That whistle sounds like the same one used on the Norfolk and Western 1218.
I think it is the same one.
🤨
@@NW-gi1cp yes we were talking about you
Oh wow! That's awesome!! Just add more locomotives and do it again! That's impressive to see she's still got it in her
Glad you enjoyed! Most people really underestimate her strength.
@@haydenharman2351 I think it's her 57" wheels. She's quite small in the superpower articulated steam world but being compound they have POWER, but no speed high speeds although the design for compound was to try and gain speed which they did but not enough to be used over simple articulated designs.
@@haydenharman2351 Do you work there? And do you have a discord?
@@mr.sir. yes and yes
@@haydenharman2351 Ooo! Ok my discord is posted on my channel! I would love talking about your experience working their because I am getting a job as a conductor at BNSF
I'm 80 years old & I expected to see a mile long coal train behind it.👍♥️
Glad you enjoyed! Hopefully one day we can get a mile long coal train behind her.
They would need WAYY more than one diesel to stop him 🤣
Fantastic my friend
Thanks
Giving her a workout! I recently ordered her in O guage from Lionel.
The best part is that she still had more in her.
Considering what 1309 was designed to do I think they'll need a lot more then an SD-40 to make her work.
Yes, but she definitely was working in this video.
Get a set of sd70 locos, that will do the trick
no
The diesel was most likely in dynamic braking, which would put considerable load on 1309.
@@divergingapproachproductions yes. the diesel was dynamic breaking
Holy word i can't say that engine is working beyond hard
The best part is that she still has more power in her.
@@haydenharman2351 now to see if she can pull a 2 mile long fully loaded freight train
@Ashley Dorsey I wouldn't doubt it as long as the track is reasonable.
IF WM 1309 ran on the mainline then that would be a spectacular as it is largest engine running East of Mississippi beside UP 4014 going to Chicago for abit
I would love to see her run on the main to.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again no diesel alone can ever beat in articulated steam engine.
sounds amazing!! do you know what was causing that sharp thumping sound (you can see it corresponding with steam puffing out in the lead trucks at @0:55)?
For some reason the name of it escapes me if I think of it I will let you know.
@@haydenharman2351 haha yea that happens! thank you! is it a type of snifter valve?
They’re actually safety valves for the front cylinders. The engine was working so hard they kept popping off.
@@CaptainCrutch ahhhh ok never seen that before. Thank you!
@@makipsee that’s a compound for you, the front cylinders aren’t built to withstand much more than 90psi and so they have to have safety valves to keep them below that…
Is she...
_...beatboxing!?_
The music of steam!
@@haydenharman2351 56 seconds.
That's how much i struggled to answer to that.
With the diesel engine dynamic brakes fully applied does that lock the up n keeps the wheels from turning n if so was 1309 pulling the diesel engine with the wheels locked up?
Still trying ta learn n understand the brake system on the diesel engines with the steam train engines
Great question the easiest way for me to explain dynamic breaks is that think of it as a J-Brake on a tractor trailer but on a diesel electric engine. This video has a decent explanation of how it works. czcams.com/video/4v7qMYUIHHA/video.html
Thing is the steam loco probly wasn't at full tilt ether (like not shoveling coal constantly)
Also steam engines the slower they go the more power they can put down
She has a coal auger, which many back in the day would have said has the best functionality between a regular coal burner and an oil-fired locomotive.
Is there any chance of 1309 running by itself without a diesel engine
Ya 1309 runs without a diesel all the time.
What was the purpose of this? To see if she is still capable of pulling heavy loads?
For fun and just to see how strong she actually is.
@@haydenharman2351 Cool! Would love to see her pull a cut of loaded coal hoppers. Now that would be awesome!
@@imagreatbigman ya
@@imagreatbigman so would i
As Hayden said, for fun, but also to blow out the smokebox and blast pipe.
steam train with beat box
So is she basically operating against the diesel?
Yes. To put it simply the diesel is trying its hardest to stop from 1309 pulling it.
@@haydenharman2351 well that’s one way of doing it!
@@BMMEC6000 she definitely proved her power
My grandfather was an engineer on that train
The scenic line or on the c&o?

Western Maryland and B+O
He worked out of union halls in Pittsburgh PA, Brunswick , MD and Hagerstown MD.
He retired when management said he had to go to diesel school.
The valve is out
Which valve?
The mallet can pull over 100 cars of freight
Ya. Over 100 depending on the track
add a second sd40
how?
as much as i love steam locomotives, i cant believe they made it pull against the dynamic brakes on the diesel locomotive - im in california, i just had to replace the engine in my piece of shit car to pass smog, just so i could obtain a tag - it cost me $1200, im currently laid off and broke. just like you cant smoke in a restaurant anymore, because you cant contain the smoke to one area, neither can they - so what the f ck ? if they can get rid of newsum i dont care if they run it everyday - as a matter of fact id like to convert my pick up to wood fired steam -
the first minute or 2 is just 13-9 being helped by a diesel, what's so special abt it
No. The diesel is dynamic breaking causing 1309 to work.
Agree, Dynamic Braking, actively providing Resistance, Better than just dragging a heavy Train. Dynamics can be varied upon how much Drag on the locomotive be tested.
@@floydrandol2731 thanks for helping to prove my point that the diesel is dynamic breaking not pushing 1309
Man can't read, lol
